A Case of Mistaken Identity in Translation: “Omar Khayyam’s Rubaiyat” in Dazai Osamu’s Novel No Longer Human

Abstract This article explores the source and the meaning of the eleven quatrains quoted by modern Japanese writer Dazai Osamu (1909-1948) in his last complete novel, Ningen shikkaku (No Longer Human, 1948). Although dubbed as “rubaiyat”, which would indicate that they are translations of classical Persian poet and mathematician Omar Khayyam (1048-1131), the poems do not seem to match any of the known English translations from his work. This article explores the origin of the Japanese quatrains in Dazai’s novel, as well as their possible relevance for his literary work overall.

Abstract Modal verbs expressing epistemic and deontic modality can be used as discourse markers to implicate the authors’ attitude to the propositional content (doubt, certainty, hedging). Based on English modality framework, this paper discusses the uses of modals in expressing author’s attitude in Romanian and Serbian scientific discourse (social sciences and humanities) and compares these uses in the two languages.

Exploring Online Teaching and Learning. A Case Study

Abstract The present paper focuses on the practices of tertiary level students with digital learning and teaching and their views on the strategies employed in both situations, as many of them also work as or have some experience as teachers. Since the development of digital competencies is no longer optional, our study proposed to take a closer look at the specific learning/teaching strategies and to map any changes of attitude, or practice towards teaching/learning in a digital format, for a particular group of students in the field of humanities. Since many of the students train to become teachers and by the end of this academic year will have conducted more than half of the their BA programme through online classes, and the MA students will most likely only meet their colleagues face to face for the first time at their graduation ceremony, their expertise with the use of digital resources, particular learning strategies and the identified “glitches” in what concerns teaching, prove a very important source for re-shaping and debugging this medium of instruction to ensure effectiveness of outcome.

Abstract The teachers’ fundamental role in the success of the students is inevitable. Thus, knowing the various traits and personality characteristics of effective teachers can be used as guidelines to foster inexperienced teachers’ teaching quality. Among the required teaching qualities, empathy and classroom environment set up are two vital concepts emphasized by researchers. Accordingly, through relying on mega planning, the present study was conducted to find the patterns of empathy and classroom environment utilized by effective teachers. The participants were 50 teachers and 300 language learners. Three instruments were employed, namely teacher effectiveness questionnaire, classroom environment questionnaire, and teacher empathy questionnaire. The results showed that the contributions of each sub-construct in teacher effectiveness in order of their priority are as follows: empathic concern, perspective taking, fantasy, and personal distress. Results from calculating frequency and percentage for classroom environment construct showed that the contributions of each respective sub-construct in teacher effectiveness in order of priority are as follows: participation, personalization, investigation, independence, and differentiation. The findings of the present study can enlighten policy makers and administrators to plan efficient courses of action and take useful steps in training novice teachers.

Abstract This essay analyses Julian Barnes’s novel, Staring at the Sun, and shows that the concepts of truth and the present are rewritten stories of the past. In a postmodernist manner, in Julian Barnes’s novel the present is a story to be completed by the readers based on their analysis and understanding of the past.We are not presented a certain truth of the past, which is associated with a snapshot and with a slide, but various interpretations of it in the characters’ stories.

Abstract Translators faced unusual and surprising linguistic challenges in keeping the original element of the J. K. Rowling’s style in the Harry Potter series. Our paper focuses on the impact of the British writer’s story by highlighting the subtle puns and hidden clues in her made-up words that have gone “beyond the book” and even leapt into the Oxford English Dictionary.

A Double Colonization: The Case of the Arab Bedouin Woman in Fadia Faqir’s Pillars of Salt

Abstract This study scrutinizes Fadia Faqir’s Pillars of Salt by analyzing the various forms of violence against the protagonists, Maha and Hannyeh, their heterogeneous representation and their conditions within the cultural encounter between modernity and traditionality. Applying postcolonial feminism, the analysis of Faqir’s novel shows that colonization and patriarchy interact as double structures of oppression that produce cumulative forms of violence against the colonized women. It also shows that these women’s responses to oppressions are divergent: while Maha adopts unique strategies of self-empowerment that help her resist subordination, Hannyeh espouses limited ones that intensify her disempowerment. As for the encounter between modernity and traditionality, the analysis indicates that imperial colonization and its modernity have destructive consequences on the colonized nation: they blur both its social formation and cultural identity.
