COVID-19 has forced educators, institutions, and their staff to switch from physical to remote education This study investigates the effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on the international education system, particularly in Afghanistan. Specifically, this paper explores how students in Afghanistan have been affected by the pandemic, and identifies and evaluates the challenges faced by the education system of Afghanistan due to the pandemic. Moreover, factors affecting the use of technology by students in Afghanistan are also analyzed. A quantitative research methodology was utilized by collecting responses from students through a questionnaire distributed online. All data collected were subjected to descriptive statistical analysis. Results revealed that technology has not benefited students very much, and the effects of COVID-19 have been extreme on them. Furthermore, insufficient time to learn new technologies has proven to be challenging for students. Developing technology requirements for students during COVID-19 may be an important element of adaptability to the pandemic. Moreover, it was found that Afghanistan already had poor internet and technology infrastructure before the pandemic, which further deteriorated during COVID-19, leading students to experience increasing internet disconnection and costs and decreased communication with teachers. Effective strategies to deal with these problems are discussed.

Physics education essentially intends to cultivate student’s analytical and reasoning capabilities. However, this objective is hard to achieve because there are many students who facing difficulties in solving physics problems. This research was conducted to identify the types of student’s difficulties in solving momentum and impulse problems, along with the factors causing it. This research was conducted using a descriptive qualitative approach to 66 students of Senior High School 2 Makassar who had studied momentum and impulse topics. The data collection process was carried out using test and interviews. Based on the results, it can be identified that there are two types of student’s difficulties in solving momentum and impulse problems. The first type was physical difficulties which consisted of student’s difficulty in understanding the questions (26%) and student’s difficulty in determining the useable equations (25%). Then, the second type was mathematical difficulties which consisted of student’s difficulty in substituting the data to the equation (63%) and student’s difficulty in performing mathematical operations (76%). Based on interviews and analysis, it can be concluded that these difficulties was commonly faced by students while solving physics problems, including in momentum and impulse topic. Futhermore, the difiiculties were caused by several factors, namely: 1) the lack of student’s understanding about physics concepts, 2) the weakness of student’s mathematical skills, 3) the lack of physics learning process which is not honing student’s problem-solving skills and 4) the lack of student’s motivation on developing their problems solving skills in physics subjects. Thus, researchers recommend to all physics teachers in Indonesia to immediately develop or implement learning strategies or methods which are considered capable of overcome all student’s difficulties that have been found.

Despite the importance of biology for sustainable development, students’ performance in the subject has been inconsistent. Several interventions have been used to improve students’ learning of Biology but the inconsistency in performance persists. Thus, this study investigated the use of hands-on learning in enhancing students’ academic achievement. The research adopted a pretest-posttest control group quasi-experimental research design with 2x2 factorial. The study also examined the moderating effect of gender on academic achievement. Fifty-eight students offering Biology in the intact classes of two randomly selected schools participated in the study. The data was collected using a 25-item Biology Achievement Test for Students (BATS) subjected to face and content validities, and reliability test. The test-retest reliability method yielded a reliability coefficient of 0.68. The data analyses revealed a significant difference in the effect of strategy on the academic achievement of students in Biology (F (1,53) =8.595), p=0.05, but in favour of the conventional method of teaching. Further findings showed no significant difference in the effect of gender on the academic achievement of students (F (1,53) = 0.980), p>0.05. The researchers noted that hand-on activities are important for Biology learning and recommended that school authorities should allocate adequate time for that purpose.

The purpose of this literature review is to analyze and evaluate the research studies conducted on science process skills (SPS) in science education in the context of developed and developing countries. A follow-up to this study will investigate teacher facilitation of SPS development at Primary School level in Zambia. The method carried out in this study is a literature review. It involved analyzing and synthesizing some research work already conducted globally, considering the educational significance of SPS. The search was limited to peer-reviewed journal articles written in English and whose full papers were available on the databases. The articles were published between 1987 and 2018 because SPS’s teaching and learning has been prevalent in research since the early 1980s. In total, 198 articles were found as a result of the initial search. The researcher screened abstracts of these articles to judge their relevance, and from this screening process of abstracts, 31 papers have been included for review. Reviewed study trends on SPS development conducted from developed and developing countries focusing on three vantage points: science curriculum, teacher education and the 21st Century Learning. Based on the findings, more research studies on SPS in science education are carried out in developed countries than developing ones. The review findings indicate uneven inclusion of SPS in the science curriculum documents and the curriculum implementation at all science education levels. Lastly, results display few studies on SPS education regarding 21st Century Learning conducted in developed and developing countries. Concerned education bodies must take appropriate and reasonable exploits on teacher training of SPS education and the balanced inclusion of SPS in the science curriculum and its implementation into consideration. SPS still champions the development of other skills individuals are supposed to possess in this 21st-century era. Hence, SPS education in science education remains a need for both developed and developing countries.

It involved analyzing and synthesizing some research work already conducted globally, considering the educational significance of SPS. The search was limited to peer-reviewed journal articles written in English and whose full papers were available on the databases. The articles were published between 1987 and 2018 because SPS’s teaching and learning has been prevalent in research since the early 1980s. In total, 198 articles were found as a result of the initial search. The researcher screened abstracts of these articles to judge their relevance, and from this screening process of abstracts, 31 papers have been included for review. Reviewed study trends on SPS development conducted from developed and developing countries focusing on three vantage points: science curriculum, teacher education and the 21st Century Learning. Based on the findings, more research studies on SPS in science education are carried out in developed countries than developing ones. The review findings indicate uneven inclusion of SPS in the science curriculum documents and the curriculum implementation at all science education levels. Lastly, results display few studies on SPS education regarding 21st Century Learning conducted in developed and developing countries. Concerned education bodies must take appropriate and reasonable exploits on teacher training of SPS education and the balanced inclusion of SPS in the science curriculum and its implementation into consideration. SPS still champions the development of other skills individuals are supposed to possess in this 21st-century era. Hence, SPS education in science education remains a need for both developed and developing countries.","PeriodicalId":30735,"journal":{"name":"USEJ Unnes Science Education Journal","volume":"199 1","pages":"12-17"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-02-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"77468196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
