This research aimed to investigate the types, the most dominant types of category shifts, and meaning shifts that occurred in the category shift found in the English to the Indonesian press releases on ANTARA news. The descriptive qualitative was used to investigate the data. The theories were applied, namely Catford (1965) and Simatupang (2000). Furthermore, this research took three samples of the press releases on ANTARA news. The data were taken from looking at the official website of ANTARA news. Then, the data were put in the table consisting of SL and TL. After resolving the analysis of each category shift, the researcher found 306 data. Structure shifts occurred to the number of 139 data or 45 %, intra-system shifts were 85 data or 28 %, unit shifts were 72 data or 24 %, and class shifts occurred are 10 data or 3 %. The most dominant category shift was structure shift. Furthermore, the result of meaning shifts, there were 300 data or 98% for no meaning shift. The result of the specific to generic and vice versa as well as the cultural point of view had 3 data or 1% for each type.

Code-mixing, which is the use of two or more languages that are mixed in one utterance, is commonly practiced by bilingual or multilingual people. Then, this study aims to find out the types and the reasons for code-mixing performed by Gita Savitri Devi, a content creator, in one of her videos on YouTube channel entitled "Plis Stop Nyebarin Hoaks!! Beropini Eps. .55". Qualitative descriptive method is used to conduct this study, and the data are analyzed using Hoffman’s theory (1991). The results of this study indicate that there are three types of code-mixing that are found in the video, namely intra sentential code-mixing, intra lexical code-mixing and involving a change of pronunciation. Furthermore, the writers also find three reasons why code-mixing is utilized, among others are: (1) talking about a particular topic; (2) being empathetic or emotional about something; and (3) repetition used for clarification. The existence of code-mixing in our daily life is able to facilitate us to language learning. However, there are still some mistakes in using the language such as dictions and ungrammatical structure. Therefore, we have to be careful in using the language and adjust it with the society to avoid miscommunication.

There is a vast amount of English for foreign language (EFL) textbook evaluation studies analyzing multi-dimensional values around the world. However, only a limited number of literature analyzes the Islamic value in EFL Textbooks, especially in Indonesia. To fill this glaring gap, the present critical discourse study aimed to investigate the intrinsic Islamic value contained in Indonesia's government-mandated English textbook for secondary high school students. Halliday’s systemic functional analysis and Kress and Van Leeuwen's visual grammar theory were then conducted to understand, analyze, and explain the content and the picture in the textbook respectively. Compassionate, respect, and care for life in all its forms; solidarity and conflict avoidance; and tolerance for cultures of the different ethnic and religious groups were found to be the major themes of Islamic values emerge from the textbook. Finally, conclusions, limitations, and recommendations were then discussed.

Interjections in an everyday speech frequently serve as pragmatic markers, initiating utterances and connecting them to the preceding interaction. Interjections can happen in three different types: primary emotive interjections, primary cognitive interjections, and secondary volitive interference. Thus, the present study aims at analyzing the interjection types and emotional state in the “Sam & Cat” sitcom. This research focused more on 5 episodes in this sitcom. This qualitative research is conducted by observing and analyzing the conversation between two main characters in the sitcom. Using the theory that discuss those three types of interjections and twenty one emotion states, the researchers discovered some results. According to the data, the most common use is primary emotive interjections that appeared 50 times. Continued with primary cognitive interjections that appeared 33 times and secondary volitive interjections that use 26 times. Furthermore, there are three emotional states with the same amount: imitation, contempt, and enthusiasm. These emotional states express the main character's situation that appears 14 times. However, triumph and wonder are two emotional states that have not appeared in those 5 episodes.

A novel is a literary work that frequently uses cultural items. Therefore, translating a novel requires specific strategies. This paper aims to investigate (1) aspects of translating cultural words in the Perahu Kertas novel and (2) the acceptability of the translated version of the cultural words. This descriptive qualitative research collected the data using a note-taking technique. The collected data were then analyzed using the textual comparison theory (Apostolatu & Apostolatu, 2012). This study has revealed that aspects of translating cultural words in the novel are cultural equivalence, literal translation, expansion of meaning, omission elements, remaining, and transformation. These aspects have successfully presented the cultural items from SL into TL and effectively maintained cultural items in the SL by not translating the items in the TL.

This research aimed to analyze the use of speech style and the factors that influenced the use of speech style in the Jimmy Kimmel Live Talk Show in all episodes that were aired in November 2021. Speech style is the choice of words based on the level of formality used by a person in communicating, which is influenced by several factors. In this research, the researcher applied Joos' (1976) theory of speech style and Holmes' (2013) theory of factors that influenced the choice of speech style. This research was classified as qualitative descriptive. All of the data in this research were taken from the conversation subtitles between the host and the guest/s, which contained various types of speech styles and were transcribed into the text form. Then, the collected data were classified based on the types of speech styles. After that, the factors that influenced the host and the guest/s to use the speech style were analysed. Based on the results of the research, there are four of the five types of speech styles in this research. Frozen speech style was not found in this research. The four speech styles found in this research were formal (6%), consultative (12%), casual (81%), and intimate (1%), the dominant type of speech style is casual speech style and the least one is intimate speech style.

Korean film has been rampantly surging all over the world, particularly in Indonesia. Moreover, Squid Game (2021) by Hwang Dong-Hyuk is popular in the country due to its plot and settings which present the real condition of the gap between upper-class and lower-middle class urban people in South Korea. It becomes intriguing for Indonesian audience because it shows the happening fact not only in South Korea but also similarly in Indonesia. The research was aimed at investigating Indonesian audience’s responses on physical and verbal violence depicted on Squid Game series (2021) by Hwang Dong-Hyuk. The research used the qualitative approach with reception analysis method by Stuart Hall. There are four audiences who become the informants of this research coming from urban workers and Korean film enthusiasts. The data collection technique was done through interviews as well as document analysis. The result showed that the informants’ reception towards the scenes are varying due to the situation and context that set the scenes which present different uses of physical and verbal violence.

TED talks are known for highlighting the speaker’s affective responses to the topic and encouraging the audience to engage along that lead to a great number of interactive functions of discourse markers and features. Thus, the writer is interested in analyzing the interactional discourse markers used in motivational speech in TED talks by comparing the difference between male and female speakers. The data consists of two corpora of TED motivational speeches delivered by male and female speakers with the total of 43160 tokens of female speaker corpus and 51873 tokens of male speaker corpus. The data is analyzed by using Hyland’s stance and engagement features to identify both speakers and audience point of view in the speech. The findings show that female speakers tend to use more of both stance and engagement features than male speakers. It is shown that female speakers tend to be more expressive in composing their speech in order to create an impressive and communicative presentation. Meanwhile, male speakers tend to use more explicit and direct markers in their speech to engage with the audience and focus on delivering the topic and material instead.

The purpose of this study was to study the moral values and character education in the story Osakat Anak Asmat by Ani Sekarningsih which was used as teaching material. The method is descriptive qualitative with an approach of content analysis. The data are written words from a subject that has been observed. The subject of this study is the story. Data analysis contains the value of character education that is contained in the story. The results showed that: (1) nine characters values were issued by the Ministry of National Education and Culture, namely independence, discipline, social care, curiosity, friendly/communicative, religious, hard work, creativity, and rewarding achievement; (2) four moral characters can be emulated, namely obedience to parents, sharing or giving, patience, and wise; and (3) three behaviors are not exemplary, namely irresponsible, discouraging friends and jealousy.
本研究的目的是研究Ani Sekarningsih的故事《osaka Anak Asmat》作为教材的道德价值观和品格教育。方法采用内容分析的描述定性方法。数据是被观察对象的文字。这个研究的主题就是这个故事。数据分析包含了故事所包含的品格教育价值。结果表明:(1)国家教育文化部发布了9个汉字价值观,即独立、自律、社会关怀、好奇、友好/交流、宗教、努力、创造力和奖励成就;(2)四种品德可以模仿,即服从父母、分享或给予、耐心和智慧;(3)不负责任、劝阻朋友、嫉妒三种行为不具有模范性。

This research studied the concept of racial identity development of the main character in Amma Asante’s movie Belle. This research also describes the social relations between the main character’s identity development and women’s agency. The analysis is founded on the theory of racial identity development and the sociology of literature. The results showed that, in Belle movie, the main character experiences all the rounds of racial identity development which challenges her agency to make the social change she wanted. Thus, these two subtopics correlated with each other that also represented how the racial identity development and the women’s agency influence the socio-cultural life of the main character in understanding her existence among other beings.
