Relevance-Based Context Sharing Through Interaction Patterns
R. Gombotz, D. Schall, C. Dorn, S. Dustdar
In collaborative working environments (CWE), human interaction patterns represent reoccurring situations describing the sequence and type of interactions between individuals. We believe that such patterns provide information that may be used to improve human collaboration. In this paper we introduce interaction patterns to an existing context sharing platform used by distributed teams. We use these patterns to formulate rules that help determining the relevance of context information between users and that raise team awareness between interacting entities. These rules are integrated in an existing platform for context sharing between mobile users which allows us to demonstrate the practical applicability of our approach

This paper presents results of a survey, related to the theoretical task-technology-fitness framework. The survey was conducted in a large Oil and Gas company in Norway, namely Statoil ASA. The task-technology-fitness framework indicates which groups of medium or technology are appropriate to choose according to the task to be performed, when collaborating with others. We have here presented the extended version of the task-technology-fitness framework, according to how Statoil ASA's employees use SMS, e-mail, instant messaging and audio (phone call), in different collaborative tasks. In total, there were 333 out of 747 respondents who participated in the survey. The results reveal that SMS and Instant Messaging are not seen as efficient or well suited communication channels for collaborative tasks. E-mail seems to be favorable among the respondents for the collaborative tasks, while audio (phone call) follows closely. The results are important in that they indicate when SMS, e-mail, instant messaging and audio (phone call) are appropriate to use. The purpose of the survey was to discover potential area of improvements for Statoil ASA

Trust Enhanced Security - A New Philosophy for Secure Collaboration of Mobile Agents
Ching Lin, V. Varadharajan
The mobile agent computing model violates some of the fundamental assumptions of conventional security techniques. Consequently, this has rendered many of the existing conventional security countermeasures less effective for mobile agents. In this paper, we propose a new philosophy of trust enhanced security, which advocates a paradigm shift for mobile agent security solutions: from security-centric to trust-centric with the aim of providing improved security and performance of mobile agents. We first examine the problem of uncertainty in behavior induced by the security assumption violations by mobile agents; we then propose a trust enhanced security approach and argue for the need for a paradigm shift to trust-centric solutions. Next we identify a list of general design requirements for the trust-centric solutions and outline the new architectural design which supports the new trust enhanced security philosophy in practice. Finally we discuss the emergent properties of the new architecture and introduce the experimental results for validating the properties

A Framework of Multiple-Aspect Component-Testing for Trusted Collaboration in Mission-Critical Systems
Joon S. Park, A. Suresh, Gaeil An, J. Giordano
Although we need software-component sharing in a large distributed system, we cannot simply trust those components provided by participating organizations, especially when malicious groups or competitors are involved in the collaboration. When a wide range of malicious activity needs to be tested, a large overhead is incurred in scanning for malicious code and checking internal failures. Large projects also have multi-functional teams working and any lack of communication or overlooks in design can lead to unchecked security holes when the system is integrated. Moreover, it is not always easy to test the whole system for security and accuracy in preventing attacks because one can never develop a test plan for that which one is unaware of, such as a specialized attack by a hacker that compromises a system. Therefore, in this paper we develop a dynamic approach for testing software components in using multiple aspects of testing with high accuracy. We also present new techniques that provide for an automated system architecture that provides for a scalable and flexible distributed testing mechanism capable of handling newer threats at very short notice. We have considered the use of Microsoft's .Net and C# as the platform to describe and prototype the testing mechanisms

Transaction Processing with mobile collaborative works
M. Nygård, H. Le
The theme of this research is mobile transaction processing systems, focusing on versatile data sharing mechanisms in volatile mobile environments. The rapid growth of wireless network technologies and portable computing devices has promoted a new mobile working environment. A mobile environment is different from the traditional distributed environment due to its unique characteristics: the mobility of users or computers, the frequent and unpredictable disconnections of wireless networks, and the resource constraints of mobile computing devices. The authors have developed a mobile transaction processing system for MOWAHS. Especially, we have successfully designed, implemented, and tested several important system components such as the mobile locking system and the mobile data sharing system

The usage of ontologies to develop a semantically rich experiment models promises to be a key advantage of scientific applications over earlier alternatives. Whilst it is often recognized that information gathered for the ontology modeling process can describe naturally the scientific knowledge and can be used for interoperation among heterogeneous systems (by establishing a global schema, for instance), it may also be used to create data structures, including database schema and initial code signatures, containing metadata and semantics for their applications. The aspects involved in the translation of ontology models into suited metadata, however, can render in wasted efforts and useless schemas for scientific applications. This paper explores an approach to generate semiautomatically appropriate data structures for handling scientific information. Based on this approach, we developed a tool that let scientists to develop canonical models and automatically generate the related database schema. This tool supports a wide range of scientific use cases for complex models within the VL-e project. This project carries out concerted research along the complete e-science technology chain, ranging from applications to networking, focusing on new methodologies and re-usable components

Link-Based Ranking of the Web with Source-Centric Collaboration
James Caverlee, Ling Liu, W. Rouse
Web ranking is one of the most successful and widely used collaborative computing applications, in which Web pages collaborate in the form of varying degree of relationships to assess their relative quality. Though many observe that links display strong source-centric locality, for example, in terms of administrative domains and hosts, most Web ranking analysis to date has focused on the flat page-level Web linkage structure. In this paper we develop a framework for link-based collaborative ranking of the Web by utilizing the strong Web link structure. We argue that this source-centric link analysis is promising since it captures the natural link-locality structure of the Web, can provide more appealing and efficient Web applications, and reflects many natural types of structured human collaborations. Concretely, we propose a generic framework for source-centric collaborative ranking of the Web. This paper makes two unique contributions. First, we provide a rigorous study of the set of critical parameters that can impact source-centric link analysis, such as source size, the presence of self-links, and different source-citation link weighting schemes (e.g., uniform, link count, source consensus). Second, we conduct a large-scale experimental study to understand how different parameter settings may impact the time complexity, stability, and spam-resilience of Web ranking. We find that careful tuning of these parameters is vital to ensure success over each objective and to balance the performance across all objectives

Supporting Distributed Collaborative Work in Manufacturing Industry
A. Campos, Paulo Pina, R. Neves-Silva
Manufacturing companies face a great need to improve competitiveness and strengthen market position. This pressure demands a strong collaboration from all actors involved in the product or production value chain. However, manufacturing industry is still missing the necessary support, in methodologies and tools, to achieve efficient collaboration strategies. This paper introduces an innovative approach to support collaboration in assembly and manufacturing systems, being developed in the scope of the European project InAmI. The main idea of the approach is to combine agent, ambient intelligence and semantic-based knowledge management technologies to provide the most appropriate use of all knowledge within extended enterprises, to support collaboration. The InAmI innovative approach comprehends a methodology and a platform for the efficient creation and maintenance of collaborative services

A Collaborative Environment Integration Layer for Activity Orientation
J. Quemada, J. Salvachúa, T. Robles, E. Pastor, Santiago Pavón, G. Huecas
This paper proposes the creation of an architectural layer for integration of all the resources and members participating in a given collaborative activity into a unified framework which is referred as the collaborative environment integration layer (CEIL). This layer is considered a necessary step for integrating with open standards all the collaborative resources or components into a tightly coupled collaborative environment which implements activity orientation. The proposal considers two architectural elements. The first element is the collaborative environment description language (CEDL), which is the formal language for describing all the elements and associated parameters relevant for modeling and managing a collaborative environment. The second one is the collaborative environment management interface (CEMI), which is the unified interface which provides uniform management and configuration of the collaborative components of an environment. This layer includes accurate descriptions of the virtual organizations associated to collaborative activity, including participants, roles, rights, hierarchies, etc being able to model the variety of existing virtual organization models
