A Collaborative Approach to Stochastic Load Balancing with Networked Queues of Autonomous Service Clusters
Cheng-Jia Lai, W. Polak
Load balancing has been an increasingly important issue for handling computational intensive tasks in a distributed system such as in grid and cluster computing. In such systems, multiple server instances are installed for handling requests from client applications, and each request (or task) typically needs to stay in a queue before an available server is assigned to process it. In this paper, we propose a high-performance queueing method for implementing a shared queue for collaborative clusters of servers. Each cluster of servers maintains a local queue and queues of different clusters are networked to form a unified (or shared) queue that may dispatch tasks to all available servers. We propose a new randomized algorithm for forwarding requests in an overcrowded local queue to a networked queue based on load information of the local and neighboring clusters. The algorithm achieves both load balancing and locality awareness

On Effective Utilization of Wireless Networks in Collaborative Applications
Surekha Kanapuram, H. Ali, G. Vreede
Collaborative applications allow a group of users to work together by sharing information and processes. Traditionally, these applications run in a lab environment with the support of traditional communication networks. Employing wireless technologies in supporting such applications will increase its effectiveness and usability. Wireless networks are rapidly emerging to be the network architecture of choice for many application domains due to their adaptability and scalability. However, skepticism about the level of quality of service (QoS) guaranteed by wireless networks has prevented them from replacing traditional networks in time-critical applications. Early attempts to naively replace traditional networks with wireless networks in supporting collaborative applications have produced less than acceptable results. In this paper, we show that the performance of various group decision support systems (GDSS) modules highly depends on the architecture of the employed wireless network and that selecting a proper configuration leads to significant performance improvements comparable to those obtained in wired networks

A Web Collaboration Architecture Web
A. Tapiador, A. Fumero, J. Salvachúa, S. Aguirre
Computer supported collaborative work (CSCW) has typically been bound within organizations. Groupware applications are designed with organizational structures in mind, in a top-down approach that predicts communication and collaboration interactions between people. With Internet adoption in society, CSCW overflows organizational borders towards Internet supported collaborative work (ISCW), where the organization of work becomes decentralized, centered on individual interests and pretty dynamic. This paper proposes a Web collaboration architecture for the new Web environment. The article reviews common groupware problems and reflects recent organizational changes. It presents Web 2.0 features and technical state-of-the-art. Then, it describes the architecture proposed, to finish with conclusions and future research lines

Given that outsourcing has become a fact of life, it is becoming increasingly obvious that we need to ensure that computer science students are taught the necessary skills to cope with global software development. Unfortunately, the enormous amount of time that it takes to coordinate and support such activities can deter even the most devoted educator. This paper describes a course that used a computer supported collaborative tool help teach distributed teams from Turkey and the US how to work together to solve programming problems. The system contains both collaborative tools that support groups, as well as course management software for helping instructors with administrative tasks. Examples of the usage of the system and data collected from the undergraduate computer science course that used the software are presented. Based on that experience, future plans to refine the system for early detection of problem teams, and the advantages of implementing the software as a Web service are also discussed. This information is designed to provide support for effective multi-institutional learning courses

What can you say and what does it mean?

This paper examines some of the criteria for a certificate architecture that supports trusted collaboration. Key to this support are: (1) the separation of statements from the actions they engender and (2) the ability to make arbitrary statements. The separation of statement from action enables organizations to set their own policies and therefore control what is authorized in response to a statement. The open ended nature to allow arbitrary statements to be created enables the signer to fully specify her intentions. It should be possible to make these statements arbitrarily precise, by tying the statements to their (semantic) contexts. Furthermore, we argue that it is important not only to support completely formalizable statements but also informal statements as well. We then describe an architecture we are building which meets the above criteria and give examples of its efficacy

Improving Collaboration Technology by Modeling Human Behavior
S. Poltrock
Summary form only given. Development of modern complex systems such as aircraft would be impossible without detailed descriptive and predictive models, but models are little used in the development of collaboration technology. Can models of human collaboration provide a foundation for development of new and improved collaborative technologies? The author explores this issue by considering the potential contributions and weaknesses of different approaches for modeling collaboration. Modeling approaches such as UML, workflow models, and coordination theory, and GOMS are ostensive, describing intended collaboration behavior. Modeling approaches such as grounded theory, social network theory, and temporal models are performative, describing observed behavior. The author illustrates and assesses these approaches by applying them to the domain of engineering change management, which is a well practiced, complex collaborative activity. The performative approaches generally have potential for (a) improving technology requirements by enriching understanding of collaborative behavior and (b) monitoring ongoing collaborative behavior. The ostensive approaches can help guide or constrain collaborative behavior. Taken together these approaches may enable collaboration technology to adapt to changes in behavior and provide guidance about ways that people can improve their collaboration

Supporting Collborative Mobile Applications using Adaptable Transactional Framework
H. Ramampiaro
The theme of this paper is on support of mobile applications using adaptable transactional framework. We specifically look at the case of the adaptable-transactional framework approach CAGISTrans. The paper discusses how such a framework can be used to address the challenges incurred by the collaborative and dynamic nature of mobile applications, as well as its inherited mobile nature. It is widely known that several approaches to this theme already exist. However, many of the solutions are at most proprietary, and do not take all aspects and challenges of mobile applications and mobile environments into consideration. With CAGISTrans, which was originally developed for cooperative work support, we have attempted allow the transactional support to be adaptable, thus covering most situations and needs as possible. Our hypothesis is that with extensions, CAGISTrans can be used to address mobile collaborative applications. In general, we believe our approach is useful, but we still recognise the fact that it still has rooms for improvements. There are issues that have still to be addressed such as full support for frequent disconnection, replication and recovery requirements

View-centric Operational Transformation for Collaborative Editing
Hyunjoon Jung, Hyeon-Jong Song
Collaborative editing enables multiple users who reside remotely to share and edit some documents at the same time. It is fundamentally based on operational transformation which adjusts the position of operation according to the transformed execution order. For a last decade, many researches have been performed in this area and the correctness and possibility of operational transformation have been proved. Even though operational transformation gives us the possibility of collaborative editing, it has a limitation with a viewpoint of usability and efficiency. In other words, the existing operational transformation is devised without considering the properties of collaborative editing such as the frequency of operational transformation and human-centric viewpoint. In this paper, we would like to introduce view-centric operational transformation which considers the priority of transforming operation according to user's viewpoint. Using this way, we have tried to improve the existing operational transformation and provide more useful and efficient collaborative editing

Fast and Effective Spam Sender Detection with Granular SVM on Highly Imbalanced Mail Server Behavior Data
Yuchun Tang, S. Krasser, P. Judge, Yanqing Zhang
Unsolicited commercial or bulk emails or emails containing virus currently pose a great threat to the utility of email communications. A recent solution for filtering is reputation systems that can assign a value of trust to each IP address sending email messages. By analyzing the query patterns of each participating node, reputation systems can calculate a reputation score for each queried IP address and serve as a platform for global collaborative spam filtering for all participating nodes. In this research, we explore a behavioral classification approach based on spectral sender characteristics retrieved from such global messaging patterns. Due to the large amount of bad senders, this classification task has to cope with highly imbalanced data. In order to solve this challenging problem, a novel granular support vector machine - boundary alignment algorithm (GSVM-BA) is designed. GSVM-BA looks for the optima] decision boundary by repetitively removing positive support vectors from the training dataset and rebuilding another SVM. Compared to the original SVM algorithm with cost-sensitive learning, GSVM-BA demonstrates superior performance on spam IP detection, in terms of both effectiveness and efficiency

W. Chou, Li Li, Feng Liu
Service-oriented communication (SOC) is a new development in the industry to enable communication through Web services and SOA. SOC is to make communication as service and provide a service-oriented architecture to integrate communication in business applications. Recent advances of Web service and SOA have made it possible for a full Web service and SOA based communication paradigm over IP. This paper is an overview of the recent development in this area with a focus on key technologies that can be applied to Web service enablement of communication. In particular, we discuss the generic Web service based application session management based on WS-session, the two-way full duplex Web service interaction framework, and the development of Web service initiation protocol (WIP). WIP is a full Web service and SOA based communication protocol for multimedia and voice communication over IP. The generic Web service approach of WIP overcomes many limitations which would be otherwise difficult to achieve in non-Web service based communication methods used today. In addition, we discuss the service composition and orchestration framework based on WS-BPEL, and illustrate the application of this approach through some real use cases
