A protocol for visual cues in collaborative augmented reality applications 协作增强现实应用中的视觉提示协议

Inspection and maintenance of complex hardware equipment can have an elevated cost, due to the sophisticated training required for the technicians responsible for those tasks. The use of collaborative Augmented Reality can solve, or at least reduce, the cost of these activities. This paper proposes a protocol for the transmission of visual cues, represented by Augmented Reality elements, in collaborative applications. The protocol focuses on a client-server communication, where the client has the role to remotely supervise the activities, possibly sending interest points or instruction to the server. A prototype application was developed in order to demonstrate the advantages of a real application usage.

An Integration Model for Access to Archaeological Collections Using Multimodal Interaction in Virtual Environments 虚拟环境中使用多模态交互的考古馆藏访问集成模型

This paper aims to develop ways of assisting the production process of virtual environments with multimodal interaction, for displaying objects and environments, especially those that require special handling, such as rare or fragile artifacts. The main conclusions of this work were: (i) The virtual model produced to be displayed in the virtual environment had the same result, both for individuals with training in three-dimensional modeling and for users without this training, (ii) the developed mechanism may be used by any person and especially by any cultural center, which can be considered the most relevant contribution of this project.

Computer simulation based interactive systems have proven to be risk-free alternatives for training the police force. Also, in these kinds of simulations, the user can make errors without dangerous consequences, unlike real-world situations. In this sense, this paper proposes a system model, aimed at shooting training, using features of video sequences and three-dimensional computer graphics interactive environments. This proposal is initially based on the evaluation of a commercial system that uses immersive virtual reality. Then, it was defined a system model, based on which, two prototypes were developed. These prototypes are already in use in a police academy, and make use of audiovisual devices and laser shots emission.

Augmented Reality in Collaborative Virtual Environment for Discrete Event Systems Modeling and Simulation 协同虚拟环境中的增强现实离散事件系统建模与仿真

The construction of complex systems requires necessary planning for its success. The Modeling and Simulation of Discrete Event Systems can help this step with analysis of functioning before the physical modification at the real world. Current Modeling and Simulation software provides several components for the creation of models, but it is necessary to change focus between real system and model when it is created. This change can damage the model validation processing. The proposal intends to show how the development of the model can be directly viewed onto the real world, by using Augmented Reality techniques, and it shows the importance of collaboration modules in this system, which can help teams of complex systems. Theoretical and practical foundations are detailed. The prototype, since the planning until the tests, are described. Results and conclusions are raised.

This work aims to present an overview about how to generate a Diminished Reality scene. Diminished Reality is seen as part of the Augmented Reality research area and there are only a few related works available in the literature about this subject. The main concepts, possible applications and works related are presented. Besides, an approach to remove objects from real scenes is presented, showing preliminary results.

Subjective Video Quality Assessment in Segmentation for Augmented Reality Applications 增强现实应用分割中的主观视频质量评估

Video segmentation to extract a person in foreground has been a common task in many Augmented Reality (AR) applications. In natural environments which the background color and the light environment are not constant the segmentation method must be able to extract the element of the interest in these conditions. However, methods for segmentation in natural environment are more error prone than the traditional ones which are based on a constant color elimination. Thus, in order to use them in a large number of applications it is necessary to know how the segmentation errors are perceived by the users in order to focus on development of algorithms which avoid the more perceptible ones. In this work a video quality subjective assessment method was applied to obtain the AR user's opinions about videos with different misclassified pixels rates. The results showed that segmentation errors are perceived by AR applications users. However, the video quality was not related with the number of the misclassified pixels. In addiction, it was noted that when the errors concentrated in the element of the interest increase the score of the associated video decreases.

3D Object Handling Support System in a CAVE Setup 三维对象处理支持系统在洞穴设置

To mimic reality through a computational system is not a trivial task. It requires that one manages resources, displays coherent imagery, as well as allowing real-time interaction. This work describes the implementation of a system which allows the display of content in a CAVE system. The system provides support to non conventional devices, such as Data Gloves, Position Tracker as well as devices such as a joystick and 3D Mouse. To display the functionality of the system we developed a prototype in which a user can handle a virtual object using his/her own hand. We discuss the system implementation based on the Instant Reality architecture and the X3D standard. We describe the development of a set of plugins for a Data Glove and Position Tracker. Through such plugins the user actions are detected and processed, which allows that such a user handles virtual content with his own hands.

FastFusion: A Scalable Multi-projector System FastFusion:一个可扩展的多投影仪系统

Multi-projector systems offer both higher resolution and brightness by using a cluster of projectors, and it can provide better visual quality when compared to traditional systems using a single high performance projector. When we consider the high cost associated with high-end projectors, the use of multiple low cost projectors can reduce considerably the cost of such installation. This article presents the research and development of a scalable multi-projection system that enables the construction of virtual reality systems with a large number of projectors and graphics computers, and that is capable of achieving a high resolution display. We demonstrate the viability of such system with the development of a camera-based multi-projector system called FastFusion, which automatically calibrates casually aligned projectors to properly blend different projections. Our system software improves known algorithms in the literature for projector calibration and image blending. The main improvement is a more efficient distribution of the calibration process. In addition, since our library proposes a new architecture that is able to manage many projectors, it may lead to the development of Immersion Systems with retina resolution. FastFusion has been tested and validated by virtual reality applications. In this work, we analyze the visual performance of FastFusion in a CAVE system with three walls, eighteen projectors and nine computers.

This article presents the research and development of a scalable multi-projection system that enables the construction of virtual reality systems with a large number of projectors and graphics computers, and that is capable of achieving a high resolution display. We demonstrate the viability of such system with the development of a camera-based multi-projector system called FastFusion, which automatically calibrates casually aligned projectors to properly blend different projections. Our system software improves known algorithms in the literature for projector calibration and image blending. The main improvement is a more efficient distribution of the calibration process. In addition, since our library proposes a new architecture that is able to manage many projectors, it may lead to the development of Immersion Systems with retina resolution. FastFusion has been tested and validated by virtual reality applications. A Model of Assessment of Knowledge Acquisition in Three-Dimensional Learning Virtual Environments 三维学习虚拟环境下的知识获取评估模型

Despite the scientific community's interest in developing Three-Dimensional Learning Virtual Environments (3D LVEs) by using interactive technologies, few studies have measured the actual effect of these environments on learning. This paper presents a Theoretical Model for the Learning Evaluation that can be applied in many 3D LVEs contexts, as well as a proposal for its computer architecture, as a way to investigate the contribution that LVEs effectively provide to learners' knowledge acquisition and how this learning process can be evaluated. To support this research, the results of Systematic Review (SR) are also presented, which sought to identify in the literature the assessment tools of knowledge acquisition that have been used in 3D LVEs.
