Ann Petry’s second novel, Country Place (1947), is classifi ed as a “white life novel” and serves as a medium to reflect on her interest in going beyond the usual “negro problem” in the African American protest novels of the 1940s to tackle the white peoples’ problems with other whites. This paper underlines the ways Petry challenges assumptions about whiteness as a universal convention and aims at making race visible by representing destabilized white (male) characters. By excavating issues of masculine anxiety and insecurity in a number of white characters, Petry endorses the progressive politics of her works in exposing racial prejudice and widening the defi nitions of racism.

The paper aims to shed light on Bertène Juminer’s novel Bozambo’s Revenge, in which the world is inverted: the Baoulian Republic (Africa) has colonized the Western Baoulian Europe (France) and black people are the ruling class. Juminer portrays commonly held assumptions about the political and economic order by means of bitter irony. Humour and satire are omnipresent in the plot, characters, language and style. The article demonstates that the novel, embedded as it is in political science fi ction, is not purely comical and can be interpreted in terms of social critique.

This analysis explores the imageries of Lake Balaton and its region created by guidebooks and other publications of early tourism. These works refer to certain elements of the cultural and literary traditions related to the lake. The paper also identifi es the most emphatic elements of these traditions in the guidebook genre. Consequently, the analysis demonstrates how Hungarian literary history narratives and cults represented in guidebooks defi ned the complex touristic imagination of Lake Balaton’s region. Firstly, a typology of the guidebooks and the evolution of this genre in the 19th century are outlined. Secondly, the paper shows a detailed analysis and interpretation of a Balaton guidebook by Aladár Jalsovics from 1878.

Estanislao del Campo’s Fausto’ gives the Gauchesco genre a twist by using parody as the central technique of the poem. The parodied text, Gounod’s opera, is based on the long conversation between two gaucho friends in which one tells the other the story of a wise man who sells his soul to the devil. Laguna listens to El Pollo’s story and intervenes at times, making comments and criticizing. The paper discusses the means by which literary “gauchos” parody the mechanisms of Gauchesco literature. The article establishes that through laughter, the poem proposes an irreverent distortion of the given that is eminently political.

This paper considers the male-dominated philosophical traditions that have failed to adequately explicate the philosophical concept of desire. From psychoanalysis to Deleuze and Guattari, these traditions conceptualized desire as lack, loss, or a formless force. However, the feminist viewpoint proves these theories were inconsistent with and unaware of feminist interests. Therefore, the paper will posit that Catherine Malabou’s philosophy of pleasure has the capacity to dismantle the phallic economy and propose novel, plastic ways of perceiving femininity.

The article deals with the Austrian-Russian writer Alja Rachmanova who became extremely popular in the 1930s. Describing her experiences during and aft er the October Revolution, her writings served the deeply rooted anti-communist resentments at the time, particularly within political contexts of the Catholic-Fascist and vehemently anti-Bolshevist Austrian “Ständestaat”. How can her success be explained by way of historical context; and why did it decline abruptly aft er the “Anschluss” of Austria to Nazi Germany?

The writer Camilo Castelo Branco is not particularly well known outside of the Portuguese or Spanish-speaking countries. In this article, following a brief consideration of the way in which his work was analyzed in the last century, the focus turns to the importance of satire in his work, and in particular parody he made of naturalist aesthetics in the late 1870s and early 1880s. Finally, the article seeks to evaluate how a parodic reading may establish a more accurate perspective on some of the characteristics present in his narrative work as a whole.

The article aims to investigate the border phenomenon and the demarcation of political and cultural borders in Gauß’s selected essays. Gauß’s essay writing originates from the European tradition of (self-)critical observation and is particularly concerned with European issues. The Austrian author examines the mechanisms of subordination and separation, the relationship between the centre and the periphery, and considers the concepts of border, nationalism, and regionalism in the Enlightenment spirit of prejudices criticism. He also recalls the Iron Curtain as the ideological border between Eastern and Western Europe and its implications. The article summarizes Gauß’s reflection on the essence of borders as artifi cial constructs and on the border’s ambivalence as a sphere of experiencing differences and a contact zone.
