Protestants in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Years 1777-1786: Between the Union of Sielec and Conflicts (Introduction to the Topic) This article examines the eighteenth century attempts to stimulate cooperation amog Protestants in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Such endeavors were undertaken in the years 1775-1776 in Great Poland, while in 1777 the Union of Sielec between Protestants of Little Poland and Mazowsze was concluded. The union was intended to bring together Protestant congregations as religious entities without interfering in particular doctrinal and religious differences among them. In 1780, Protestants representing all parts of the Commonwealth met at a general council in Węgrów. Unfortunately, the existing differences among the groups prevailed and led to conflict. In effect, the followers of the Sielec Union failed to find a conciliatory platform with the Great Poland Protestants, who were backed by the Russian Ambassador Otto von Stackelberg. In 1782, the General Council of Węgrów was dissolved, which led to the collapse of the Sielec Union. The latter section of the article examines the political prosecution of Protestants, who were attacked by the Permanent Council and the Parliament of 1784. Stackelberg’s interference, as well as the attitude of the Polish king Stanislaus Augustus towards Protestants, have been also presented.

Impact of the Northern Wars of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries on Attitudes and Relations Between Various Religious Denominations Among Poznań Burghers Wars often result in changes of peoples’ attitudes and approach towards others and social, economic and religious reality around them. This is especially true among those who have personally experienced atrocities of military conflicts. The aim of this paper is to reveal the impact of the Northern Wars (i.e. the 1655-1660 and 1700-1712 conflicts) on attitudes and relations between burghers of the city of Poznań representing various religious denominations. Examination of evidence shows that citizens of Poznań displayed usually toleration for other religions groups. This circumstance, of course, did not exclude occasional religious upheaval.

The Tumult and Confederation: Religious Significance of the Toruń 1724 and 1767 Events in the Light of Contemporary Manuscript Newsbooks In the eighteenth century, the town of Toruń, which was politically, religiously, and demographically dominated by Protestants, became twice the nucleus of a countrywide rebellion. The first insurgency occurred in 1724, when the town became the place of religious riots known as the Toruń tumult. The second rebellion appeared in the form of the dissident Crown Confederation of Toruń in 1767, which was founded in response to a Catholic confederation organized in Radom. Both incidents had meaningful impact on the overall situation in Poland-Lithuania. One can find information on these disturbances in contemporary political writings and press. In particular, we find interesting opinions about the Toruń tumult in handwritten newspapers, the only source of news in the Polish territory before the establishment of the first printed newspaper in 1729.

The Płock Genealogy – a New Interpretation of the Małopolska Source of the Second Half of the Thirteenth Century The aim of the article is to determine when the Płock Genealogy (Genealogia płocka) was created and the content of its ideological message. The text of the work has survived in one of the manuscripts in the library of Płock Charter. The subject of this text is a short description of subsequent generations of the Piast Dynasty from the earliest times to the end of the thirteenth century. This analysis includes establishing the relationship between the manuscript and other existing historical works and annals from up to the mid-fourteenth century, a detailed comparison of the information they contain with existing findings on the genealogy of the Piast Dynasty, as well as a review of the structure of the work.

The Possibility of Utilizing Missionaries’ Correspondence to Study the History of Peasant Migration (from the territories of former Polish Commonwealth) at the turn of the twentieth century The article presents new possibilities of research on the history of migration at the turn the 20th century using narrative sources, particularly the correspondence of missionaries. Peasants produced and left behind very few narrative sources, which results in migration historians rarely using them. The author indicates how to use alternative narrative sources produced by people of the Church to study the history of migration, in particular emigration from the territories of the former Polish Commonwealth.

Namiestniks of the Kingdom of Poland and Their Attitude Towards the Independence Movement in the Second Half of 1861 and the First half of 1862 in their Correspondence with the Tsar Alexander II The 1861 events proved to be essential for the development of independence movement in the Kingdom of Poland. The growing revolutionary feelings were further roused by the incompetent policy of the Tsar and his namiestniks (viceroys in Poland), whose decisions resulted in the orderly rule of the kingdom becoming increasingly difficult. The namiestniks had to meet Tsar’s demands, while at the same time trying at ameliorate the worsening domestic situation. The Tsar had obvious difficulty with the selection of appropriate personae to execute these functions. Namiestniks were changed four times in the span of one year, and the post was held by Mikhail Dmitrievich Gorchakov, Nikolai Onufrievich Sukhozanet, Karl Karlovich Lambert and Alexander Nikolajewitsch von Lüders. Keeping order and strict military regulations was not accompanied by knowledgeable execution of civilian administration, which would respect the specific situation of the Kingdom of Poland.
