The Wizna Land Dietine Facing the Moscow Threat in the Years 1654‑1667 The war between Poland and Moscow was a turning point in the history of Eastern Europe. This conflict is an excellent moment to analyse the attitudes of Polish nobles towards a multitude of issues. Most of the hitherto contributions and articles have avoided the essential social issues of the conflict. This article sets out to research the attitudes of the Wizna land nobles towards various problems connected with the war, such as ways of financing the conflict, engagement in defence of fatherland, and general opinions on war and peace.

This essay looks at the ways in which the evolving early modern urban space of London was re-presented to early modern Londoners. It focuses on aspects of how the sprawling city was culturally and literally mapped out in theatrical and other performances. It discusses in particular Thomas Middleton’s A Chaste Maid in Cheapside and Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist as plays that commented respectively on the Cheapside as a luxury market and on Blackfriars as an up-and-coming quarter boasting a new and successful theatrical venue. The area between the city and Westminster is also discussed, as is the spatial particularity of Windsor described and performed in Shakespeare’s The Merry Wives of Windsor and in contemporary chorography.

This paper is devoted to the Polish translation of John Foxe’s famous Rerum in Ecclesia gestarum on Christian martyrs, authored by a Calvinist writer, printer and composer Cyprian Bazylik. His monumental Historyja o srogim prześladowaniu Kościoła Bożego (1567) was compiled from the works of John Foxe, Jean Crespin and Heinrich Pantaleon, supplemented with Jan van Utenhove’s account of the thrilling odyssey of the members of the London’s Foreign Church led by Jan Łaski. The author aimed at creation of a complete account of the persecuted Church throughout Europe, starting from John Wycliff to 1563. Historyja is the most significant witness of the impact of Foxe’s theological thought and ideas on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth.

The Eruption of the Laki Volcano and Its Impact on France (1783-1784) in Selected Press Accounts This article is devoted to the phenomenon of the eruption of Laki volcano in Iceland in 1783 and the impact this eruption had on France in the form of toxic fog and chilling of climate. This account is based on contemporary French press, in particular such titles as „Gazette de France”, „Journal de Paris”, „Le Courrier”, as well as the Polish „Pamiętnik Historyczno-Polityczny”.

Józef Piłsudski At The Wake of Poland's Independence. An Successful Statesman And Lost Politician Piłsudski’s engagement in the creation of the Polish military and independence movement in the years 1914-1922 established his position not only as a commander, leader, ‘moral dictator’, but also a statesman. Yet, the more Piłsudski let himself be driven by high reasons, instead of personal issues, the more he lost as a soldier and politician. He paid a high price for his moral convictions, which limited the margin of loyalty and the possibility of compromise, as well as removed the possibility of resigning from the program of struggle for the Polish state and its army.

There were two “career paths” open to Renaissance women in England — entering a monastery or getting married. With the introduction of reformation the first option vanished. Getting married opened varying possibilities. On one hand the contemporary promotion of marriage reinforced the patriarchal system of the society (a man is its head and the woman and children are his subjects). On the other, the idea of a “companionate marriage” allowing husbands and wives a certain degree of equality was formulated for the first time also by sixteenth–century thinkers. The traces of the Renaissance debate on which form of life is more pious and pleasing to God – celibate or married – can also be found in the conduct literature for women, on top of other advice referring to marriage.
