Background: Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder that affects carbohydrate, protein and fat metabolism. Body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) are known anthropometric measurements used to access body fat. Good glycaemic control among diabetics has been found to be difficult to achieve. Several factors including increased body fat has been found to affect glycaemic control. Aim: This study aimed to assess the relationship between the anthropometric indices (BMI and WHR) and glycaemic control among adult diabetics attending the general out-patient clinic (GOPC) of Federal Medical Centre Makurdi (FMC) Makurdi. Materials and methods: This was a cross-sectional study of 359 diabetic patients aged between 18 to 77 years. Selected by systematic sampling technique. Data was collected by interviewer-administered questionnaire. Clinical measurements undertaken included body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio and blood pressure. Fasting blood glucose assay was done for all respondents. Data was analysed with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 18. Results: The proportion of those with good glycaemic control was 58%. The mean body mass index (BMI) was

Both Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) and Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia (ALL) are relatively common in childhood. While the former is congenital, the latter is usually acquired. Diagnosis and thorough profiling of patient with ALL remains a great challenge in most resource poor settings including our hospital. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions in our environment, there is no previously reported case of the two coexisting in an individual based on our literature search. We report a ten-year old boy in whom ALL unmasked the diagnosis of VSD and non-availability of diagnostic facilities prevented exploring any possible pathogenetic relationship between the two conditions in case of its existence.

Background: Cleanliness and dirt are a dichotomy to categorize a particular environment especially hospital settings in which cleanliness pave a great linkage to patient satisfaction on quality of care and reduction of infection. Dirt creates negative thought on the quality of services being rendered to patients in the hospital environment. Objectives: To assess the perception of patients and their relatives on the level of cleanliness in radiology department of Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital (UDUTH) Sokoto and to determine which amongst the diagnostic rooms is the cleanest (Computed Tomography (CT) room, Routine X-rays room or contrast exams room (fluoroscopy)). Materials and Method: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted, 100 questionnaires were distributed to the respondents of which 66 in Routine xray room, 23 in CT suit and 11 in contrast examination room. Out of the 100 questionnaires nine were not returned and the remaining 91 were analysed. The questionnaire contains fifteen statements in total apart from the socio-demographic component. The count of responses was considered and for each type of response (SA, A, N, D, and SD) the percentage were calculated using statistical package for social sciences (SPSS) version 23.0. Results: Sixty percent of the respondents were patients while 40% were relatives of patients that were critically ill. The modal age range of the respondents was 25-34years, 58% were married, while 48.4% were civil servants. The result of our study shows that the respondents have adequate knowledge on cleanliness with a mean score of 4.3, they perceived radiology department as a clean environment for diagnosis and visitation but need further improvement. According to the findings, CT room was the cleanest (87.0%) followed by contrast examination room 64.0% and routine X-rays room was the least 47.0%. It also revealed that lack of manpower is the cause of inadequate sanitation. Conclusion: Radiology Department in Usmanu Danfodiyo University Teaching Hospital is clean and the CT suit is the cleanest.

Background: Antioxidants are critical for maintaining optimum health and wellbeing and they protect the body against the development of diseases caused by oxidative stress. Nutraceuticals are foods or part of food that have medical benefit. The present study formulated and nutritionally evaluated an antioxidant rich nutraceutical. Materials/Methods: Nutritional analysis of proximate composition, amino acids and fatty acids profile, antioxidants vitamins and minerals were determined using standard methods. Tomatoes, ginger, garlic, onion, watermelon seed, lemon juice and palm oil were used to formulate the nutraceutical. Results: Proximate composition analysis
