We have designed and fabricated a 355 /spl times/ 150 mm multilayer dielectric diffraction grating, 1800 l/mm for 1030 nm light, that exhibits > 99% diffraction efficiency and a diffracted wavefront flatness of < 0.15 /spl lambda/. This grating is an enabling component of a 2 ps, high rep-rate machining laser currently in operation at LLNL.

Highly sensitive femtosecond optical pulse characterization has been performed, for the first time to our knowledge, using electrooptic spectral shearing interferometry. We report a full temporal characterization of 750-fs pulses with average power as low as 10 /spl mu/W at 156-MHz repetition rate.

A time lens based on clock-driven phase modulators followed by linear dispersion accurately removes timing-jitter. When used prior to the receiver, the time lens greatly improves bit-error-rate performance in DWDM dispersion managed soliton transmissions.

The THz-radiation from a femtosecond-laser-irradiated InAs exhibits anomalous magnetic-field dependence up to 14 T. Moreover, the radiation spectrum shows clear periodic structure over 6 T probably attributed to the differently-phased radiation from holes with different mass.

We have proposed and demonstrated a novel method of realizing a shape-controllable narrowband optical filter using SBS in an optical fiber. By BPSK modulating the pump light with deliberately coded binary data patterns, various types of bandpass filters as well as notch filters were realized. These may be exploited as powerful tools in optical signal processing. Moreover, the bandwidth can be further broadened for dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) applications, by using a long highly-nonlinear fiber with a large SBS gain.

Coaxially- pumped large-aperture Ce:LiCaAlF/sub 6/ power-amplifier module for the TW ultraviolet CPA laser system is demonstrated to have 98-mJ output with 25% extraction efficiency. This performance of the gain module is sufficiently good for the TW-class UV CPA laser system. Such solid-stale laser development will open up a new category of UV high-peak-power laser systems for the real world applications.
