Powerful green upconversion lasing of Er/sup 3+/:LiLuF/sub 4/ could be achieved using a multi pass pumping setup. The maximum output was 213 mW under Ti:sapphire laser pumping. Diode pumped cw lasing at room temperature is demonstrated for the first time.

We have demonstrated a simple and straightforward method for wavelength monitoring in tunable lasers that are monolithically integrated with SOAs. This method requires simple measurements of SOAs transparency current to be performed in order to determine the emission wavelength of sampled grating DBR.

Polymer microring modulators with FSR larger than 1 THz, modulation bandwidth of 15 GHz and the fall with half maximum voltage of 20 V are demonstrated at 1300 nm. Multi-wavelength modulation with a total bandwidth of 400 Gb/s is practical.

We demonstrated, for the first time to our knowledge, the use of a photonic crystal fiber to straightforwardly compress and generate tunable 1.03-to-1.3 l-pm, 65-fs pulses from an Yb:bulk laser. This oscillator which generates 1 00-fs pulses employs an original Yb-doped apatite crystal.

We demonstrate theoretically and experimentally that the technique of nonlinear ellipse rotation in a gas-filled hollow waveguide greatly improves the contrast of microjoule-to-millijoule femtosecond laser pulses. This technique has numerous advantages over competing techniques and will facilitate the development of the next generation of ultra-high-peak power femtosecond laser systems.

An InP-based single-angled-facet (SAF) gain chip comprised of a curved ridge waveguide is used to make an external cavity semiconductor laser. Wide wavelength tuning over C, L, and S-bands (155 nm) is demonstrated with an output power of more than 80 mW over the entire tuning range and a peak output power of 130 mW.

A new scheme for the intracavity generation of terahertz radiation in femtosecond mode-locked Ti:sapphire lasers is presented. The scheme combines advantages of a fast saturable semiconductor Bragg mirror with that of a photoconductive THz emitter. It significantly increases the efficiency of the intracavity THz generation. In addition, the output THz radiation can be electrically modulated at frequencies up to 100 kHz.
