UH-Victoria has offered both face-to-face sessions and online sessions to the students for most of computer science courses. However, COVID-19 has forced nearly all students including those who initially selected face-to-face sessions to online instruction during pandemic time. In this paper, we conducted a survey in five different courses to find out what students thought of moving from face-to-face to online learning, what kinds of challenges and problems they met, and what kinds of resources or tools they need.

The importance of recommendation systems is increasing day by day due to the massive number of data and information-overloaded arising from the internet. This data can be collected in predictive datasets; these datasets can be processed and analysed via data mining methods. In this paper, an efficient hybrid movie recommender system has been designed using the association rules mining technique and K-nearest neighbours (KNN) algorithm as a classification method. The K-nearest neighbours (KNN) algorithm subsystem was used to create the first candidate list through a practical MovieLens dataset, which was retrieved from the source of the NetFlix network. Beside, the Apriori algorithm subsystem is used to analyse the same dataset and create the second list. Finally, the proposed system creates a final recommended list by matching the two lists. The results of the proposed system provide better performance than the existing systems in terms of the important degree. The important degree gives a better accuracy rate than the existing techniques used.

Promotion is an organizational procedure. Education, experience, and personal qualities are crucial requirements for individuals to be promoted. Their characteristics determine the promotion-eligible employee's approach to the job and compatibility with coworkers. This research employs an integrated Consistent Fuzzy Preference Relations (CFPR) - Interval Type-2 (IT2) Fuzzy TOPSIS methodology to identify the most competent individuals for promotion. Using this methodology, the ranking of individuals for a case study in Turkey is calculated. The CFPR technique calculates the weight of the criteria stated by experts in our most recent research [1]. Then, the IT2 Fuzzy TOPSIS method is used to determine the order of options using IT2 trapezoidal fuzzy numbers. Thus, the best competent candidate for promotion is selected. Thus, managers and human resources departments may assess and promote employees rapidly.

Air Temperature is a fundamental measure of the Earth’s climate but is only measured at fixed locations. Land surface temperature can be measured widely using satellites. To estimate air temperature (Ta) from the surface temperature (Ts) measured on the forested slopes of Kilimanjaro, four models with unique sets of inputs were tested using five machine learning algorithms. The RMSE for each model was compared with a benchmark model. Models and algorithms were ranked according to their RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) The models and algorithms reliability and consistency ranking were calculated. The best model and algorithm were determined. Novel models results were compared with the benchmark model. All models outperformed the benchmark model in the consistency ranking while three out of four models outperformed the benchmark model in the reliability ranking. Thus machine learning improves the estimation of air temperature in this forested environment.

The article presents a method of investigating the intensity of the connection between the parameters measured in experiments for different dynamic processes. The method is based on a function constructed from the correlation between the rows of records, called variables. The result is addressed to all specialists who try to obtain relationships between the parameters of a process, starting from the results of experimental research. It is considered that the relationships sought between the variables of the researched process do not have a theoretical foundation or do not have a corresponding one. The tool for assessing the intensity of the connection between the main parameter and the secondary parameters of a dynamic process is tested on soil tillage processes in agriculture. A hierarchy of the intensity of the connection between the main parameter and the secondary parameters or combinations thereof is provided. Using these hierarchies, researchers can create regressions based on the priorities offered by these hierarchies.

All-to-all broadcast communication, distributing messages from each node to every other node, is a dense communication pattern and finds numerous applications in advanced computing and communication networks from the control plane to datacenters. A ring network topology is one of the important regular network topologies due to its simple structure, high speed, easy to extend and tolerant to link and node failures. Few researchers recommended connecting the alternate nodes of the ring with additional fibers in the ring network, to support increased call connection probability, higher tolerable to multiple link and node failures, enormous traffic handling capability and improved survivability. To reduce the complicatedness and cost of the network, it is essential to reduce the wavelength-number required to establish all-to-all broadcast in wavelength-division multiplexed ring network. In this paper, a ring network is extended by directly linking all nodes which are separated by two intermediate nodes with additional fibers and this network is referred as ring with 3-length extension. The wavelength allotment methods are proposed for realizing all-to-all broadcast over a WDM optical bi-directional ring with 3-length extension under multiple unicast routing model using a two-stage heuristic algorithm. The heuristic algorithm is developed to identify non-overlapping connections and an explicit wavelength allotment method based on the output of the heuristic technique is given. The result obtained shows that wavelength-number required atmost to establish all-to-all broadcast in a bi-directional ring with 3-length extension is reduced by a minimum of 57% and a maximum of 66% when compared to bi-directional primary ring. Similarly, the wavelength-number required atmost to establish all-to-all broadcast in a bi-directional ring with 3-length extension is reduced by a minimum of 20% and a maximum of 33% when compared to a bi-directional ring with 2-length extension.

Industry 4.0 is the most disruptive revolution engulfing all the digital transformation from sensors nodes to cloud applications. A sustainable and secure Industry 4.0 ecosystem is a core challenge for stakeholders and state agencies addressed in this work by layered API tunnel interoperability instead of conventional cybersecurity methods and techniques. In this work, an interoperable application programmer interface (API) wrapper is being proposed to manage heterogeneous cloud architectures using Eucalyptus, Apache CloudStack, and OpenNebula. A comprehensive design and implementation plan from things layer to user interface has been accomplished in this work. Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is being automated using Ansible from Web Servers Layers through Common Gateway Interface (CGI) scripting. The Web Servers are being managed using WebSockets by micro–Web Servers Gateway Interface (uWSGI) from cloudstack managers (CSM) API. The Platform as a Service (PaaS) for big data, web servers, and machine learning platforms is accomplished using uWSGI from CSM. The public and private clouds are being managed using individual APIs. The wrapper, proposed in this work enables the big challenge of Industry 4.0 for realizing interoperability, scalability, heterogeneity, and automated cloud integration by functioning at the Software as a Service (SaaS) Layer.

Despite the food irradiation benefits, it isn’t accepted. Food irradiation is the process that exposed foodi to ionizationi radiation, suchi as electroni beams, X-raysi, or gammai radiationi to inactivate food spoilage organisms. This paper discusses the effect of radiation on the food images, how the food changes before and after taking the radiation dose, and how the PSNR (Peak Signal to Noise Ratio) changes using different metaheuristic optimization algorithms. In this paper, Image Segmentation is based on three different metaheuristic algorithms used to detect the difference between before and after irradiation. The three algorithms are (1) PSOi (Particle Swarmi Optimization), DPSOi (Darwiniani PSO), andi FO-DPSOi (Fractional-Orderi DPSOi), (2) CS (Cuckoo Search), and (3) SFLA (Shuffled Frog Leaping Algorithm). The algorithms succeeded in discovering the effect of radiation on Green Apple, Cucumber, and Orange even if it is not visually recognized. Also, the histogram of the image shows the difference between before and after irradiation.

For public transport operators, passengers’ comments towards their experience are valuable for promoting more friendly transportation services. This paper demonstrates that passenger-generated online comments can be used to assess railway transportation station services. The natural language processing and social media mining techniques that include establishing an opinion classification model through visual semantic fusion deep learning methods are applied to assess Taipei’s Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) station services from the internet opinions. An opinion monitoring system includes: (1) opinion mining to build a social media comment dataset on the ontology of MRT stations.; (2) proposing intent-sentiment, image-text relationship, and content type categories to assist accessing of passengers’ quality of experience; (3) constructing a classification model to classify the nature of opinions (4) proposing visualization to provide an intuitive information display dashboard to help Taipei’s MRT operator sense the sentiment-intention trends of comments on each station and access the current service level as well as part of the quality management assessment is also proposed.

The limited use of fossil fuels has increased the interest in renewable energy sources. Renewable energy sources are generally direct current (DC) production. The popularity of inverters converting from DC to AC is increasing due to the generation of the generated DC signal and the current grid being alternating current (AC). In this study, a computer-controlled inverter was designed with the 16F877 microcontroller chosen as the model, and frequency and amplitude controls were realized with the serial communication system of this structure. A digital-analog converter (DAC) circuit is formed by connecting the R-2R ladder type resistor to the relevant ports of the microprocessor. With the codes written to the microprocessor, the signal response was taken from the DAC circuit, and the signal response at the ports was combined with the inverter and collector operational amplifier (op-amp) circuits, and the inverter design was completed.
