Abstract Background Due to increasing life expectancy, the number of elderly people is increasing. This contributes to the increased incidence of geriatric syndromes, which lead to a loss of mobility, independence and worsens the quality of life. Aim The aim of this article is to review the literature on the use of dance training as a factor in reducing the risk of falls, depression and dementia in the elderly, and also in reducing the effects of these conditions. Material and Methods 40 articles were reviewed using PubMed, Google Scholar and ResearchGate databases published between 2008 and 2022. Conclusions Dancing can be an element of training, which, by improving coordination, balance and muscle strength, reduces the risk of falls among the elderly. By positively influencing the mood, creating opportunities to build new relationships or reducing the feeling of loneliness, it is one of the factors preventing the occurrence of depression and alleviating its symptoms. Although dancing increases the level of neurotrophic factors and increases the volume of the hippocampus, its effects on cognitive and executive functions are not fully understood. However, there are reports that it can reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s disease and alleviate anxiety in people with dementia, so the use of dance interventions seems to be a beneficial form of exercise among the elderly, especially since it does not require the use of specialized equipment and costs are not high.

Abstract Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato is a Gram-negative spirochete that causes Lyme disease (Lyme borreliosis). The signs and symptoms of Lyme disease are a consequence of the immune response to spirochete in soft tissues, and it is debated if said immune response can become an autoimmune disease of the body over time due to bacterial and HLA/MHC molecular mimicry. Continual Lyme Disease (CDL) also known as Post-Treatment Lyme Disease Syndrome (PTLDS) is a broad group of rapidly appearing flu-rash symptoms and cognitive difficulties combined with chronic fatigue that is observed after at least six months after completing treatment. This review contains scientific collections throughout the last 10 years of studies related to alleged post-infection auto-immunogenicity.

Abstract Background Cardiovascular diseases, classified as civilization diseases, constitute the most common cause of death among both women and men. Metabolic syndrome is a set of factors that predispose to the occurrence such diseases. Importantly, can be partly prevented by reducing modifiable risk factors. Objective The aim of the study was to uncover the distribution of selected risk factors for cardiovascular diseases among patients utilising primary health care in the Lodz Voivodeship. Material and methods An original online questionnaire consisting of 32 questions was distributed. The study involved 164 inhabitants of the Lodz Voivode-ship who use primary health care facilities. Inclusion criteria: residents of the Lodz Voivodeship, aged between 30 and 60 years as well as informed consent to participate in the study. Results Hypertension affected 26.2% of participants. In the age range 30–40 years: 4.1% of participants, 41–50 years: 28.3%, and 51–60 years: 61.4% of participants. Diabetes affected 21.3% of participants. 64% of respondents had a BMI above normal. 28.7% of respondents did not engage in physical activity. Among the surveyed, smokers accounted for 37.8%. Among university diploma holders, smokers accounted for 28.2%, and those with non-university education – 54.1%. Conclusions The incidence of hypertension in the population of Lodz increases with age. The prevalence of dyslipidemia was independent of gender but dependent on education – higher among respondents with non-university education. Most of the inhabitants of the Lodz Voivodeship were physically active. Moreover, the most frequently chosen forms of physical activity were walking and Nordic walking, and less frequently – aerobics. The prevalence of smoking was similar among women and men. Smokers were more likely to be people with non-university education. The need of taking measures to raise awareness of cardiovascular risk factors, promote healthy lifestyles, and combat obesity has been identified.

Abstract Background Palliative care is a form of medical care that focuses on providing comfort and pain relief to patients with severe, incurable diseases. The World Health Organization defines quality of life as “an individual’s perception of their position in life in the context of culture and value systems in which they live and in relation to their goals, expectations, standards and concerns”. Quality of life and palliative medicine represent two aspects that should be inseparable in the comprehensive care and treatment of a patient at the end of life. Objectives The aim of this study was to assess quality of life among patients under palliative care using the WHOQOL-BREF and EQ-5D questionnaire. Material and methods The study included 100 consecutive patients admitted to palliative care between September 2018 and January 2019 being treated in a hospice and at home. A three-part survey process was used to collect data, including the following: Demographic Data Form; WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire; EQ-5D questionnaire. Results The WHOQOL-BREF questionnaire was analyzed for 4 domains. The study obtained the following results: Domain 1=40.2; Domain 2=39.94; Domain 3=36.1; Domain 4=37.7. According to the guidelines of the EQ-5D questionnaire, it was shown that 43% of patients are unable to walk or have serious problems with walking, 59% of patients are unable or have serious problems with self-care, 61% of patients are unable or have serious problems with ordinary activities, 52% of patients have severe or extreme pain/discomfort, 65% of patients are very anxious or depressed. Conclusions 1. The study showed that patients covered by palliative care present low indicators of quality of life. 2. According to the data obtained, palliative care programs should pay special attention to the improvement of quality of life by taking an interdisciplinary approach to its resources.

Abstract Background Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive lung disease that significantly impacts everyday life. To date, little is known about oral cavity health in patients with IPF. Aim The study aimed to evaluate the condition of the oral cavity in patients with IPF and to assess their quality of life concerning oral cavity health. Methods The study was a cross-sectional one, collecting clinical data of patients with IPF and control subjects without pulmonary disorders. Data collection included baseline characteristics, oral cavity inspection results, and 12 answers provided in the GOHAI questionnaire. Periodontal status was investigated, and PD, CAL, BoP, API, CPITN and OHI were analyzed. Saliva secretion, halitosis, and oral lesions were also assessed. Results A total of 85 subjects – 40 patients with IPF and 45 controls – were enrolled in the study. In patients with IPF, both lower PD [0.54 (0.36–0.96) vs. 1.1 (0.6–1.44); p=0.001] and CAL [0.54 (0.3–1.26) vs. 1.43 (1.04–1.91); p=0.006] were found, and those patients also had lower saliva secretion [1.08 (0.33) vs. 1.28 (0.39); p=0.01]. Patients with IPF received periodontal treatment less frequently [2 (2.24%) vs. 15 (17.6%); p=0.001], and dental instruction was shown to them less often compared to the controls [13 (32.5) vs. 26 (57.78); p=0.02]. Moreover, IPF patients had significantly higher GOHAI scores [50.68 (5.24) vs. 44.37 (5.94); p<0.001] compared to the control subjects. Conclusions Our study findings prompt the need for regular dental consultations and careful observation of dental prophylaxis in patients with IPF. The differences noted in the quality of life assessed using a GOHAI questionnaire need a further validation in larger cohort studies.

Abstract Introduction Pregnancy is a special time in a woman’s life. Physical activity during pregnancy, after excluding possible contraindications and adjusting the appropriate form of exercise, benefits both the mother and the developing child. It is recommended that pregnant women exercise about 150 minutes per week, especially recommended disciplines are walking, swimming and aerobic exercise. Objective To assess the knowledge of pregnant women from the Lodz Voivodeship about taking up physical activity. Material and methodology Original online survey questionnaire consisting of 33 questions. The study involved 111 pregnant women. Inclusion criteria: pregnant women, aged between 20 and 40 years, residents of the Lodz Voivodeship, informed consent to participate in the study. Results Women taking physical activity before becoming pregnant accounted for 56.73% of subjects, while 63.96% of subjects were physically active during pregnancy. Pregnant women most often chose walking (33.33%), swimming (27.93%) and indoor cycling (18.02%). The most popular sources of knowledge for pregnant women were: medical staff (72.07%), Internet (41.44%) and family (30.36%). Conclusions Women who exercised before pregnancy continued to be active during pregnancy. More than half of the previously non-exercising pregnant women were inactive. Among those who exercise before pregnancy, the most common forms of physical exercise are: fitness, swimming, running and cycling. Among pregnant women walking, swimming and cycling. Abstract The flow of information contained in medical records can be controlled by implementing appropriate legal and technical procedures and the hospital is protected against costs associated with the loss or release of medical records to unauthorised persons. The aim of the article is to analyse the legislative and organisational regulations defining the scope of obligations of healthcare system entities to keep medical records, as well as the effectiveness of tools ensuring the protection of patients’ rights with regard to medical records produced as a result of health care services provided to them. An analysis of the legal state of affairs was carried out (October 2021) regarding the patient’s rights to medical records and access to them, an analysis of the personal and material scope of the right to medical records, including the right to patient privacy and confidentiality in terms of medical records. The analysis of the legal situation regarding medical records and the patient’s right to them concerned the applicable rules regarding access to records during the patient’s life and after death, also in the context of persons authorised by the patient. The results of the analysis dealt with the forms in which the records were made available to persons and entities authorised by the legislation, as well as the consequences of violating patient’s rights to medical records. The results of the analyses made it possible to formulate the following conclusions: the issue of the implementation of the right to documentation is very important and constitutes a fundamental right of the patient. The policy of ensuring access to medical records to authorised entities is an important element of the functioning of a healthcare entity. All participants in the system are obliged to exercise due diligence in respecting the rights and obligations imposed, to ensure security during the processing of medical records kept on various information carriers – paper, electronic, portable carriers. Budgetary resources should be provided to continue investing in the development of central IT systems that allow for the secure collection of relevant information from medical events and ensure access to it at an appropriate level of security.

Abstract The onset and rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in 2019 was the reason why WHO announced a number of restrictions related to population movement, gathering, limiting access to cultural, recreational, and sports facilities. Most schools and universities moved to a hybrid or fully remote mode of teaching. Studies show that regulations aimed at reducing the spread of SARS-CoV-2, including home isolation, negatively affected students’ mental state, motivation to work and study. The purpose of this study is to assess the health behaviors of Calisia University students during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods A questionnaire comprising 16 questions was developed. The questionnaire was introduced into the Survey Monkey electronic survey system with a note explaining the purpose of the study. On June 22, 2022, a link to the questionnaire was e-mailed to all students (n=1,425) of the Calisia University. A reminder was sent to the students two weeks later. Results On the basis of our study, it was found that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on the students of the Calisia University. Some of the students suffered from the disease, which consequently affected their physical condition. During the pandemic, no significant increase in anti-health behaviors, such as smoking cigarettes or drinking excessive amounts of alcohol, was observed in the students. For most of the respondents, the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on their mental state. In addition, the pandemic had an adverse effect on the economic situation of the surveyed students. Conclusions No significant increase in anti-health behavior was observed in students during the pandemic. Respondents claimed that the COVID-19 pandemic had a significant impact on their mental state and definitely worsened their economic situation.

Abstract Hypokinesia in seniors reduces mobility, which results in a decrease in their general well-being and quality of life. In this study, changes in blood pressure and saturation values in seniors after aqua jogging training were assessed. In addition, the subjective average level of fatigue and its impact on HRMAX were analysed. Quality of life was also assessed in the study group of seniors. In a group of 49 people attending aqua jogging classes (66.3±5.4yr; F:39; M:10), the values of pressure and saturation were measured in 4 subsequent measurements (before and immediately after training, as well as 1 min. and 5 min. after training). The Rating of Perceived Exertion scale (RPE), the SF-36v.2 quality of life questionnaire and the WHO-5 Good Feeling Index were used to assess the level of fatigue during training. Blood pressure measurements were highest immediately after the exercises and thereafter decreased. HRMAX at the fifth minute after the exercise increased significantly (r=0.3) following increasing fatigue (RPE) (p=0.017). A satisfactory level of quality of life in seniors was recorded at 71.1±18.0% [WHO–5] and 59.0±13.0% [SF–36v.2]. A higher level of quality of life was recorded in the psychological sphere (SF-36v.2 MCS:61.1%±7.7%). The greater physical exertion felt by a studied individual resulted in a slower pulse decrease after the exercise.

Abstract Background Health is a state of complete physical and mental well-being, and the right of every individual. Its presence is influenced by various factors. It is well known that early prevention, aimed at avoiding disease, has a greater impact on quality of life and longevity than disease treatment. Through their behavior, young people determine the development of diseases in the future. Medical students are a special group in that respect. They should be more aware of the need to lead a healthy lifestyle, but they are at risk of chronic stress and other disorders due to strenuous studies. Objectives Learning about selected health behaviors of medical students of the Medical University of Lodz. Material and methods Medical students of the Medical University of Lodz; form of the study: original online questionnaire. Results 76.6% of the respondents were physically active. The favorite form of physical activity of medical students in Lodz were exercise in the gym (57.1%), walking (36.7%), and running (28.6%). 67.3% of the interviewees had normal body weight. 33.6% of the respondents admitted to smoking. 0.9% of the respondents drank alcohol daily, 28% at least once a week, 57.9% at least once a month, and 13.1% did not drink alcohol at all. Only about every third student did not drink energy drinks (34.6%). 35.5% of the respondents reported sleeping problems. Conclusions Medical students of the Medical University of Lodz were physically active: most often they exercised in the gym and walked. Men were overweight and obese more often than women. Greater physical activity and a lower percentage of smokers in the students of higher years of study may indicate an increase in the healthy lifestyle awareness. In universities, there is a need for activities aimed at students to raise their knowledge about prevention and healthy lifestyle.
