This study examined the styles of learning and thinking and age-related visual recall performance of pilots. The study used the Style of Learning and Thinking (SOLAT) survey instrument to determine pilot's learning preferences and compared pilot learning patterns to a control group of non-pilots. The study also examined possible decline in visual recall performance of pilots using a neuropsychological test, the Rey-Osterreich Complex Figure test (ROCF). Decline in visual recall performance of pilots can affect flight safety. There were 130 military pilots, 35 commercial aviation pilots, 26 general aviation pilots, and 57 non-pilot controls in the

The accident of FedEx Flight 14 was caused by something that pilots do with alarming frequency, flying an unstable approach. This is a large problem in general aviation, and after reading this analysis it will be apparent that the only way to recover fiom an unstable approach is to go around. This analysis begins with a description of loss of control on landing and shows how common it is. The details of FedEx Flight 14 are then discussed in length, as well as some of the training and procedures at Federal Express. Then, aviation safety tools, such as the 5-M Model, are applied to the accident to uncover some of the root causes, as opposed to the apparent causes provided by the NTSB. Finally, the action that has been taken locally in the Daytona Beach, FL area will be discussed. This action includes a safety seminar which was held on Embry-Riddle's campus, as well as an article that was published in the campus

A recent study of the university's Flight Training Device (FTD) use revealed possibilities for improving the training environment for ab initio pilots. One improvement is the design, development, and application of a Virtual Air Traffic (VAT) hnctionality. VAT will use voice recognition technology linked to semiautonomous and autonomous virtual air trafic integrated into the FTD's virtual environment. Virtual aircraft and controllers will communicate via the radio functionality. The student pilot will communicate with the virtual controller through the radio hnctionality using voice over (VoIP) and voice recognition software. The virtual controller will respond with a synthetic voice. The desired outcome of using VAT during training is to be better prepare student pilots to function in flight while minimizing the need for actual airplane flight training.
