The article focuses on “Organizational Strategy, Structure, and Process,” by Raymond Miles and Charles Snow, and its effect on strategic management and organization theory. Miles and Snow's views are at the philosophical midpoint of business-level strategy—between the situationalists and the universalists. They proposed four basic types of strategy: defenders, prospectors, analyzers, and reactors. The concept of strategic equifinality, a configurational view of strategy, business risk, and the typology of strategy classification systems are mentioned.

Executive Overview The events of September 11, 2001, rocked the nation. While great attention was riveted on Ground Zero and the drama of individuals directly dealing with the tragedy's aftermath, there has been less assessment of how employees in general were affected by this crisis. What impact did this terrorist event have on employees in the workplace? Are there lessons that can be learned to effectively manage employee reactions to terror next time? This article reports on a survey capturing employee reactions three months after the September 11th attacks. The results suggest that while managers have responded to employees' physical safety concerns since the crisis, they have paid less attention to their emotional concerns. The survey revealed that many employees were reacting to the crisis in a manner similar to that of people who have witnessed a traumatic event. We show that, three months after the event, prominent emotional responses included fear, denial, and anger. We also show that there is a ...

Users of the cooperative's services are also voting members who control the cooperative, the owners who provided the equity capital, and patrons who received the benefits of use. Profits or net income are usually distributed as patronage-based refunds. Globally, farmer-owned cooperatives are important suppliers in the world food economy. Cyclical downturns in agriculture contributed to the recent bankruptcy of two large cooperatives. Farmland Industries and Agway, and caused financial stress in others. The article reports on 2003 research pertaining to small and medium-sized enterprises in Korea. Researchers looked at data over a 25-year period. They found that small-sized business enterprises have grown both in the number of workers they employ and the level of value they have added. The evidence suggests that small and medium-sized firms have played an integral role in transforming the Korean economy through increased exports, foreign investments, and productivity. From 1990 to 1994 the number of small and medium-sized firms making foreign direct investment and the value of those investments increased by over 500%.

Executive Overview When markets grew rapidly in the 1990s, many companies unquestioningly adopted employee stock options and implemented them at all levels within organizations. Recently, however, the corporate world has been described as suffering from an “overdose” of stock option compensation. We argue that more attention should be paid to the design of stock options to enhance their effectiveness. In support of this argument, we first review the upsides and downsides of stock options from recipient, company, and shareholder perspectives. Next, we identify conditions in which stock options can help a company implement a strategy and motivate key talent. We then provide guidelines for designing stock options, suggesting that managers must ask the following questions: Who should receive stock options? How many? What terms should be used? How often? At what price? What ownership? Careful consideration of these questions will lead to employee stock option compensation that promotes strategic goals; enables...
