Jewish research libraries emerged in the wake of the Jewish Enlightenment and the Jewish studies initiated subsequently. They formed the foundation of this new field of knowledge, rapidly developing by Jewish scholars. The subject of this article is the history of three German libraries – one in Breslau and two in Berlin – and four libraries in the Second Polish Republic: one in Warsaw, two in Vilnius, and one in Lublin. After introducing these Jewish research libraries from their foundation to Hitler’s rise to power (1933) and, respectively, to the outbreak of war, the author describes their fate during the years of Nazi rule. Closed, confiscated, destroyed, looted, deported, used in perverse ways – all seven ceased to exist. The subject of the text section of the article is the postwar distribution of the volumes surviving from these Jewish libraries. The article closes with reflections on the study of the provenance of the survived books, dispersed in collections on several continents, as a means of saving the libraries from which they originated from oblivion.

The article focuses on the book production in the 18th century, referring to the preserved documents enabling studies on the publishing process, and the development of book prices at the final period of the noble Polish Republic. Preserved account books present management strategies of publishing companies, the cost of materials, and ways to price the work of typesetters and printers. The other source consists of inserate prints announcing publishing subscriptions, and giving accounts of subsequent editorial and printing works. These materials are extremely valuable, as there are only a very few of them preserved in Poland due to changing fortunes of the printing houses.

The National Library of France launched the Shared Heritage collection in 2017, with a series of digital libraries dedicated to France’s relationships with different countries or regions, illustrating a new way of engaging with content. The collection has also proved to be a catalyst for networking and capacity building in the field of preservation and digitisation. Shared Heritage continues to be developed technologically and scientifically.

The library of the Museum of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn has a rich collection of old prints. Among them, volumes once belonging to the Königsberg preacher Johann Graumann (1487–1541), known under the pseudonym Poliander, have been identified. There are 28 volumes with 157 bound titles. The theologian’s private library numbered nearly 1,000 copies. After his death, it was handed over to the care of the Königsberg City Council. In accordance with his will, the volumes initiated the Königsberg City Library (Stadtbibliothek Königsberg). After the end of the Second World War, the Königsberg book collection was dispersed. As a result of a campaign to secure cultural property in the former East Prussian territories, several dozen volumes of Königsberg provenance found their way to the MWiM Library in Olsztyn. The rest of J. Graumann’s book collection was transported, among others, to the University Library of the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.

The Vilnius Circle of the Union of Polish Librarians was active in the years 1923–1939. The Circle aimed to deepen the librarianship knowledge of its members, to promote knowledge of libraries and librarianship in the Vilnius area, to watch over the proper development of minor libraries and to facilitate active participation in the nationwide librarianship movement. To this end, the Circle organized reading and discussion meetings, visits to Vilnius libraries and archives, established and maintained ties with the central authorities of the Union of Polish Librarians in Warsaw, the circles of the union in other cities, as well as organizations with a similar scope of activity. The number of members of the Circle in particular years ranged from 37 to 54, and the presidents of the Circle were Ludwik Czarkowski, Stefan Rygiel, Adam Łysakowski. The Vilnius Circle was officially dissolved in the autumn of 1939 by order of the Lithuanian authorities, but in the first years of the war it continued its activities clandestinely, which were expressed mainly in mutual assistance of librarians.

This article is devoted to the recently attributed eight parchment strips stored in the Сollection of the Archdiocese Archives in Gniezno (MS Fragm. 244). These fragments have not previously appeared in the scientific literature, so the main purpose of this publication is to inform the scientific community about the new sources and their introduction into circulation. All the bits are written with the Ustav script. These fragments were separated from two different Church Slavonic codices as the analysis of handwriting and the content has shown. Six strips belong to the one manuscript with the text from the New Testament. These are two incomplete passages from Eph 3,14–21 and Eph 4,14–16, that allow identifying the original codex as Apostol Aprakos. Two other strips from the liturgical codex. They contain excerpts from prayers, which were read at the evening service on the eve of the feast of the Trinity. The attribution of the content of these two strips has allowed us to consider them an additional part of the Liturgiсon. Those fragments may be dated to the 12th – 13th centuries according to the studies of the material side of the pieces, palaeography of scripts, graphic and orthographic identification, and linguistic features.

Various materials published in professional journals show us a picture of the professional life of a given group. Therefore, an attempt was made to reconstruct the image of ibrarianship in Czechoslovakia in 1945–1955 on the basis of the content published in two major periodicals: „Knihovna” and „Lidová Knihovna”. During this period, the functions of libraries and librarian were redefined. Convincing decision-makers about the role of books in building the socialist system resulted in attempts to involve librarians in propaganda activities.
