Clinical accounts have traditionally emphasized the importance of anxiety in the development and maintenance of sexual dysfunction (e.g., Masters & Johnson, 1970). However, a review of empirical research suggests anxiety, operationalized in a variety of ways, has no effect or facilitates genital responding in heterosexual men and women. The apparent contradiction between the clinical and empirical literature might be resolved if anxiety and sexual arousal are conceptualized as complex responses involving cognitive, behavioral, and physiological systems (Lang, 1968). Two models of sexual dysfunction (Barlow, 1986; and Palace & Gorzalka, 1990) are discussed in terms of this revised conceptualization, and directions for future research on the relationship between anxiety and sexual arousal are suggested.

A sample of 796 college student volunteers in Human Sexuality and Introductory Psychology classes were surveyed anonymously about sexual attitudes, experience, and knowledge. The survey measured attitude variables found previously to predict attitudes toward forcible date rape (Fischer, 1986) and behavioral measures, such as sexual experience and sexual abuse as a child, teenager, or adult. Survey variables wre related to two types of self-reported sexual offenders: (a) those who admitted to use of lies or false promises to have sex (N=69) and/or (b) those who admitted to use of threat or force to have sex (N=16). Logistic regression and discriminant analyses revealed that male gender, a tendency to blame society, rather than the male, in a date rape vignette, more accepting attitudes toward forcible date rape, having used threat or force to have sex and greater sexual experience, including same gender sexual experience, identified 71% of students admitting to having lied or made false promises to have sex. Only two variables (blaming society or the situation, rather than the male, in a date rape vignette and some likelihood of rape, if sure of not being caught) identified 73% of forcible male sex offenders. Prior victimization did not relate to either type of sex offending. Thus, Groth's (1979) explanation of forcible sexual assault as an expression of internal developmental crisis (resulting from prior sexual abuse) was not supported.

Twenty adolescent male sexual offenders were evaluated by penile plethysmography on two separate occasions. Stimuli consisted of 19, two-minute audiotaped cues. Test-retest reliability was demonstrated for 15 of the 19 audiotaped vignettes. The highest correlations were found for those sexual behaviors in which the adolescents had engaged.

Studies were conducted on the reliability and discriminative utility of the Adolescent Cognitions Scale for juvenile sexual offenders. Results indicate that the scale had only marginal reliability from test to retest conditions, and did not discriminate between groups of juvenile sexual offenders and youth without a history of sexual perpetration. The authors offer hypotheses for the obtained results, and suggest avenues for further research concerning the development of this instrument.

The author has summarized the history, psychophysiologic bases, validity, and techniques of polygraphy. Methods for the use of this approach with sexual abusers are described along with the findings as they relate to both the usefulness of these procedures and their validity.

An examination of the Cognitive Distortions Scale (CDS) in 45 sex offenders indicated that, on average, 81% did not endorse the items of the scale. Results suggest that response bias on the CDS is a significant problem that should be addressed before the scale can be used clinically.

This study examined the effects of prior exposure to videotapes of erotic and nonerotic activities, on the subsequent sexual arousal of 75 nonoffender males. Prior exposure to explicit videotapes depicting rape significantly enhanced subsequent arousal to forced sex but had no impact on arousal to consenting sex. Prior exposure to explicit and nonexplicit consenting sex videotapes did not produce subsequent arousal patterns that significantly differed from that produced by prior exposure to a nonerotic videotape.

This study sought to determine how effective lectures, discussion, small group problem-solving, explicit films, and a gay-lesbian panel might be in reducing homophobia. At five selected times during a human sexuality course, three instruments were administered measuring attitudes toward gays and lesbians, same-sex sexual and affectional behavior, and the self-esteem of student respondents. No one teaching strategy emerged as superior to any other but, rather, all yielded decreased scores on homophobia and increased scores on self-esteem over the course.

The assessment of treatment outcome for sexual offenders is an important concern for correctional, mental health, and child welfare agencies. Improvement in treatment should be assessed by reductions in factors that are associated with sexual offense recidivism. Although the research as generally inconclusive, several areas that have theoretical support as potential risk indicators are denial/minimization, sexual activity, sexual interests, and sexual attitudes. Procedures for assessing these constructs are reviewed, and suggestions are provided for developing new measures.
