This paper develops policies for channel allocation in Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN). Game Theory is a tool which can be applied to allocate the limited resources among the selfish users in CRN. The distributed users actions and decisions can drive the system into an equilibrium state. We analyze the Nash Equilibrium (NE) solution for different CRN scenarios beginning from simple scenarios (`Fixed: 3 link, 2 ch' and `Fixed and Random: 5 link, 3 ch') then to a more complex one (`Random: 10 link, 4 ch'). We then develop policies for channel allocation for CRN based on the results obtained. These general policies can be used in other CRN scenarios to reach equilibrium solutions with less computation resources and time.

Nowadays, renewable energy resources (RERs) are greatly increasing. The intermittent characteristics of the RERs will affect the transmission network expansion planning (TNEP). Consequently, this paper presents a new problem formulation and solution procedure for the TNEP which can cope with the intermittent characteristics. Taguchi's Orthogonal Array Testing (TOAT) is used to select the scenarios which represent the loads and RERs uncertainties. In this paper, a new index “Renewable Energy Leak (REL)” is proposed to evaluate the “unutilized or leaked” renewable energy in the TNEP. For minimizing the investment cost of transmission network expansion, annual generator operation cost, and annual transmission line loss cost, the meta-heuristic Adaptive Tabu Search (ATS) algorithm is used while the system operating limits including REL index are taken into account as the optimization constraints. The proposed procedure is tested in a modified IEEE Reliability Test System 79. The results show that the proposed method is efficient and promising.

In this paper, an induction furnace employing with half bridge series resonant inverter built around IGBT as its switching devices suitable for melting 500 grams of brass is presented. Melting times of 10 minutes were achieved at a power level of approximately 4 kW. The operating frequency is automatically tracked to maintain a small constant lagging phase angle using dual phase lock loop when brass is melted. The coil voltage is controlled to protect the resonant capacitors. The experimental results are presented.

In today's modern world 3D modeling is used in numerous practical applications. Surveillance, Traffic Control, Driver Assistance & Biomedical imaging are few to name. Higher accuracy is vital in each application. Thus accuracy enhancing techniques are used in each case. Among many other techniques Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is best known for its recursive least-mean square algorithm for error elimination and optimum estimation. Yet detecting and tracking of objects in an unknown territory using a mobile platform remains a challenge. The purpose of this paper is to provide a practical method for detecting, tracking and reconstructing of objects in an unknown territory with a higher accuracy using EKF.

Risk management is an essential process in software project management. Effective management of risk significantly helps increase rate of project success as well as reduce potential costs of failures. This paper proposes an innovative card-based game which simulates entire cycle of risk management. During the activity, the participants form an organization called “A Risk Management Incorporation (ARMI)”. They are then given chance to experience, analyze, plan, repeat and evolve their risk management processes. Based on the study result, ARMI helps not only simulate an insightful risk management cycle but also improve the participants' attitude towards this critical project element.

This paper presents a design of scalable service platform for sensor network applications, which have to deal with large volume of data. It is challenging to design and develop a scalable system for managing a massive amount of data to be stored, processed, and transferred. In our proposed system, we integrate advantages of several techniques, which are reactor pattern, MVC model and Blueprint CSS framework. In our performance test based on reactor pattern, the simulation results show that 100 percent of successful rate can be achieved at high load. The implementation of web application based on MVC model provides modifiability and extensibility in our service platform. Furthermore, the web application development base on Blueprint CSS framework can support various web browsers. Based on our experiments, the service platform can be practically applied for other new services and applications.

This paper presents a novel user interface with computer. We propose eye and face detection via Haar-like feature with Bilateral Total Variation based super-resolution to resize the low resolution eye image from web camera. The center of eye-pair detection is mapped to the mouse coordinates in computer screen. Left click and right click are controlled by blinking left eye and right eye, respectively. Ambient illuminations are fluorescence and natural daylight in day time mode and fluorescence as one light source at night time mode. The system performance are evaluated on measuring sensitivities of face and eye detection across (1) distances between web camera and the user, (2) roll and pitch angles of the head pose, and (3) eye-center coordinates for controlling computer functions.

This paper states an embedded CPU performance required for processing packets at a continuous throughput of 1 Gbps. And the out-of-order execution of packets is proposed for processing a variety of packet frame size in the CPU performance. Despite the requirement of high-speed network connections in embedded devices and mobile devices, it is not realized that an embedded CPU capable of high-speed packet processing with low-power operations. In this paper, the authors estimate operating frequencies for processing packets at a continuous throughput of 1 Gbps using a MIPS architecture which is widely used for network devices or embedded systems today. Then, the cases that must be processed with a high-spec CPU is revealed, the solution is proposed. When the frequency of 1.0 GHz and 64-bit registers are used, the CPU usage is 11.0 %.

The optical packet switching is widely used switching technology in current optical networks for high resource utilization. However it is not suitable for larger flows or real time traffic due to random packet loss and high delay variance. On the other hand, an alternate technique, optical flow switching (OFS), is suitable for the large flows. So to transport both types of traffic effectively, a hybrid approach of switching is proposed in this paper to combine optical packet switching and optical flow switching to exploit the merits of both technologies. Performance has been evaluated in terms of Loss probability and average packet delay. Proposed hybrid technique outperforms the existing OPS in terms of network latency.

Quantum key reconciliation is an essential process of quantum key distribution (QKD). It aims to correct the transmission errors after the distribution of quantum objects over a quantum channel, where two legitimate parties use a classical public authenticated channel to disclose correlated bits for agreeing on their common key. This work proposes an alternative promising method employing LDPC-codes bit-flipping decoding to practical implementation of quantum key reconciliation. In our proposed scheme, the low-complexity code bit-flipping decoding based on syndrome decoding is modified and applied to conventional Winnow protocol to achieve both error correcting performance and low complexity of hardware realization, i.e. FPGA logic cells and/or memory. From numerical simulation while the performance of our proposed scheme in terms of final bit error rate (BER) and disclosed bits is superior to conventional Winnow and CASCADE protocols, it yields low complexity in LDPC decoding comparable to the existing LDPC-based reconciliation protocols. Therefore, the technique is promising to high-speed discrete-variable QKD applications.
