This chapter covers selected research in postcolonial theory published in 2020 and some work delayed and published in early 2021. It begins with a discussion of a new edition of an introduction to postcolonialism and a journal issue with an article cluster devoted to the legacy of Edward Said’s Orientalism (1978) before it focuses on two books that rethink postcolonial studies. The work discussed demonstrates how the ideas in the postcolonial theory and methodology toolbox can still be put to good scholarly use in explorations of bottom-up postcolonialism and activism as well as in top-down postcolonialism and the reading of texts. The book-length studies propose reframing exercises and practical demonstrations that point to new avenues where postcolonial perspectives are still invigorating and, possibly, invaluable.

Disability Studies

This chapter reviews recent publications in the field of disability studies on disability and criminal justice systems, particularly through the processes of institutionalization and incarceration. The main texts that serve as the corpus for this review define disability broadly, though devote analysis to historical constructions of intellectual/developmental disability and psychosocial disorders, labels that are critically evaluated in each text as well as in this review. By concentrating on institutionalization and incarceration, these texts are specifically focused on how ‘disability’ is entangled in the criminal justice systems of Anglo legal structures (USA, Canada, England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, New Zealand/Aotearoa, Australia) that developed out of English-speaking imperial forces. Specifically, these texts take issue with the idea that the process of deinstitutionalization, the movement of disabled individuals from enclosed facilities to inclusive community settings, was successful in liberating disabled individuals, specifically disabled black, Indigenous populations. This chapter proceeds in four sections. First, we focus on the contemporary definitions of institutionalization and incarceration across the different legal systems traversed by each author. Second, we consider the organizing tension of neoliberal capitalism as a framework through which to analyze and critique continued forms of institutionalization and incarceration. Third, we observe the need to center disabled black, Indigenous experiences of incarceration and institutionalization under the auspices of ‘inclusion’ in the supposed era of deinstitutionalization. Lastly, we move through the alternatives to the forms of institutionalization and incarceration assessed in these texts and offer directions for further critical thought.

This article reviews five monographs, two edited volumes, two articles and one journal published in 2020 in the emergent field of Book Theory. This review takes Book Theory to mean theoretically-alert work at the intersection of the literary and material, and reflects on what that combination of material and theoretical approaches brings to scholarship through the work under discussion. The review is divided into four sections: ‘On the Book’, ‘On Reading’, ‘On Paper’, and ‘The Structures of Book Theory’.

Theatre and Performance

Abstract There is a sad irony in writing about theatre and performance scholarship at a time when most US and UK theatre are still closed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. However, for all its challenges, 2020 saw the publication of several noteworthy books that significantly advanced the field of theatre and performance studies, and which offer some cause for celebration. This review focuses on three major subject areas: 1. Performing Women, Women in Performance, 2. Tackling the Body, and 3. Social and National Borders. Several larger ideas unite the texts reviewed here, in varying constellations across these three sections: questions about representing identity, about failure and impossibility, and about unity, division, and the porous boundaries between the two. The term ‘encounter’ recurred with startling frequency across these eight texts, signalling a shared central concern with how far the performance space might offer a site of communion—or, at least, communication—in our fractious historical moment.

This year saw the continued expansion of four vibrant conversations within the field of theater and performance studies. The first section of this review, ‘World Stages and Their Borders’, features scholarship that explores how theaters represent worlds beyond the nation’s territorial and symbolic boundaries. The second section, ‘Performing Critical Temporalities’, considers studies of minoritarian performance that engage with the lived experience of time. In the third section, ‘Theater After Liveness’, I discuss scholarship on modern drama that is in dialogue with theories of performance as a live event. A fourth section considers new works on the nineteenth-century theater, showing how ‘Celebrity, Publicity, and Amateurism’ are entwined. Finally, a brief concluding note outlines significant biographies and reference works released within the past year.

This review is divided into three sections: 1. Jeffrey T. Zalar, Reading and Rebellion in Catholic Germany, 1770–1914; 2. Edward Baring, Converts to the Real: Catholicism and the Making of Continental Philosophy; 3. ‘Translation and Religion: Crafting Regimes of Identity’, a thematic issue of Religion edited by Hephzibah Israel and Matthias Frenz. Taken together, these works provide an overview of approaches that demonstrate the value of interdisciplinary research into religion and representation. Drawing on the disciplines of social, political, and cultural history, literary studies, book history, theology, religious studies, translation studies, and postcolonial studies, they highlight the importance of research that contextualizes the relationship between religion and representation, bringing attention to its historically overlooked aspects.
