Recently, despite long-term systematic research of the Adriatic Sea ecosystem, the necessity to improve the existing protection of commercially exploited species occurred since the status of many renewable marine stocks were not in good state. In order to realise that review of scientific knowledge gather within the last two decades was required. In this paper emphasis has been placed on all the scientific knowledge concerning the reproductive biology, spawning and nursery grounds of four ecologically and economically important Adriatic fish species – sardine Sardina pilchardus, anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus, European hake Merluccius merluccius, Common pandora, Pagellus erythrinus. Main aim of this review was to establish new scientific platform that in near future should result with better conservation measures that will insure long-term sustainability of exploited marine living resources.

Four individuals of the non-indigenous blue crab, Callinectes sapidus Rathbun, 1896 (Crustacea, Decapoda, Portunidae) were collected during commercial trammel net operations in fall 2019 and winter 2020 along the coast of NW Sicily. The crabs were collected in very shallow waters on a sandy bottom close to the coast. Although blue crabs are now widespread along most eastern, western and northern Mediterranean coasts, this is the first record of this species from the central and southern Tyrrhenian Sea.

The diet of the anchovy Engraulis encrasicolus (Linnaeus, 1758) during the spawning season in the eastern Adriatic Sea 亚得里亚海东部产卵季节的凤尾鱼Engraulis encrasicolus(林奈,1758)的饮食

The objective of this study was to determine, both quantitatively and qualitatively, the variability in the diet of the anchovy, Engraulis encrasicolus, during its spawning period. Samples were obtained from commercial purse seine catches (April 2014 – September 2016) from coastal and offshore fishing areas of different trophic states and zooplankton composition over the eastern Adriatic Sea. In general, decapod larvae comprise the main source of diet during the anchovies’ spawning period in terms of frequency and abundance, followed by calanoid copepods. The main copepod prey that was identified for anchovy along the eastern Adriatic coast was calanoid Temora stylifera, followed by Oncaeid copepods and Corycaeidae. Although no significant differences in diet composition regarding the anchovy’s size was observed, the contribution of copepods decreased in larger individuals, and were gradually substituted by large crustaceans decapods, euphausiids, mysids and amphipods. However, a significant difference in prey composition between coastal and offshore areas was observed (global R=0.164, p<0.05). Beside adult copepods, offshore water anchovy fed mainly on decapod larvae and their megalopa stage, and amphipods. In the stomach of the fish caught in the coastal waters, higher contributions of euphausiids, mysids and fish eggs were observed. Prey diversity was greater in the stomach of specimens caught offshore (H’=0.59) than in the costal Adriatic waters (H’=0.40).

This manuscript presents research on six (6) Polyclorinated biphenyls (PCBs): PCB 28, PCB 52, PCB 101, PCB 138, PCB 153, PCB 180 and twenty-three (23) Organochlorine Pesticides (OCPs) in anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus) and sardine (Sardina pilchardus), from the Adriatic Sea, Bay of Herceg Novi (alongside Kumbor marine channel). Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) have been syn-thesized for the first time in 1866 and their production at the industrial level began in 1929. Intensive manufactured have been since 1939 and their exports as chemicals and products have taken place literally in every country in the world. However, the distribution of PCBs in the environment and thus in the food chains were unknown until 1966 when it were identified in human and wildlife. Despite production discontinuation in a number of countries since the mid-1970s and early 1980s, PCBs are still pollutants of major international concern. All analyzed samples contained different concentrations of PCBs and among these congeners #153, #138, #180 and #101 were the most present regarding intensification. Concentration of the analyzed PCBs in anchovies’ samples (lipid content) decreased in the subsequent order: PCB153> PCB 138> PCB180> PCB101> PCB52. The grade of PCBs concentration in homogenized ancho-vies samples decreased in the same way: PCB 153> PCB 138> PCB >180 > PCB 101> PCB 52, as well as in sardine homogenized samples and in sardine lipid content, they appear in relation to quantity in the same order. Concentration of PCB 28 shows the same value in the all analyzed samples (<10).

Oil seeps detection and mapping by SAR imagery in the Adriatic Sea 利用合成孔径雷达图像探测和绘制亚得里亚海漏油图

This study provides a new perspective on the hydrocarbon seeps in the Adriatic Sea, supporting both the environmental issues and eventual oil and gas exploration. Remote sensing techniques, particularly synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images are used to detect oil slicks on the sea surface. In such a way two groups of oil slicks have been detected in the Northern and Central Adriatic Sea on the SAR images acquired by the European Sentinel-1A and Sentinel-1B satellites in 2017-2018. Analysis of SAR images together with bathymetry, geological and geophysical data in geographic information system (GIS) have shown that these oil slicks, visible on the sea surface have natural origin, i.e. are seepage phenomena, associated to existing marine hydrocarbon systems. These oil slicks were concentrated over the shallow shelf, and repeatedly or episodically occur in the areas of interest, and are related to local oil-and-gas bearing sediments. Findings of the seeps and seep candidates that passed unnoticed from public attention indicate the effectiveness of the approach used. Finally, it is concluded that the frequent SAR imagery is an excellent tool for monitoring of seepage phenomena, and the results indicate that the use of remote sensing methods can be considered as a good approach to support oil and gas exploration in the Adriatic Basin.

A total of 6265 Mediterranean green crabs Carcinus aestuarii were sampled from the Gediz Delta in the eastern Aegean Sea (Turkey) during 24 sampling surveys with a 15-day interval from November 2014 to October 2015. The overall ratio of males to females was 1.8:1. Males were predominant in all sampling surveys, except in September 2015. The ranges of total weight (W) and carapace width (CW) for all crabs were 0.19–45.74 g and 8–53 mm. Male crabs were, on average, larger and heavier than females. The W–CW relationships were W=0.0004×CW2.88 for females, and W=0.0003×CW2.96 for males. The estimated von Bertalanffy growth parameters for females were: CW∞=49 mm, K=0.82 year-1 and t0=-0.9 year, and for males CW∞=54 mm, K=0.92 year-1 and t0=-0.96 year. The total mortality rates were 2.25 and 2.27 year-1 for females and males, respectively. The breeding season spans from mid fall to early spring peaking in winter. The recruitment of juveniles to the lagoon happens predominantly in summer. The median size at first maturity was 30.6 mm for females and 41.5 mm for males. The average potential fecundity estimate was 63565±36519 oocytes per female crab while the average realized fecundity was 42810±33310 eggs.

In this work, we present first data on biological and ecological aspects of Gobius incognitus from specimens from the Ionian Sea (central Mediterranean Sea). In particular, we provided first data on habitat preference, diet and length-weight relationship of G. incognitus on material with confirmed species identity. The species preferred “mixed bottom” (sand and rocks), where it reached relatively high abundances. The diet analysis showed that G. incognitus is a generalist and opportunistic feeder. However, small benthic crustaceans were the most important prey group. The mean total length of specimens was 6.72 ± 1.85 cm and the growth was positive allometric.

On 3rd June 2018 three juvenile specimens of Polyprion americanus were captured in the Gulf of Trieste. The wreckfish is a long-lived deep water demersal species characterized by an extended pelagic juvenile phase. The juvenile forms are recurrently recorded in the northern Adriatic and due to data deficiency for this species, original morphometric data are shown. The occurrence of P. americanus in the Gulf of Trieste is not a typical case of thermophilic species moving northward due to Mediterranean tropicalization, rather its recurrent appearance could be investigated for specific hydrological conditions coupled to its peculiar life span.

Several individuals of non-indigenous grapsid crab Percnon gibbesi (H. Milne Edwards, 1853) have been observed and photographed in the area of Palagruža archipelago (Adriatic Sea, Croatia). This is additional confirmed record of this species in the Adriatic Sea. It suggests subsequent range expansion of this species and provides further evidence of its establishment in Adriatic waters.

Non-native Pacific oyster Magallana gigas (Thunberg, 1793) was introduced to the Mediter-ranean Sea for aquaculture purposes in the 1960s. Although this species was not introduced for aquaculture to the Croatian part of the Adriatic Sea, in the 1970s, it was reported in the Lim Bay, in the North-eastern Adriatic. Until recently, there has been no research on the species in the Croatian part of the Adriatic. The aim of this research was to summarize existing and novel data on the distribution of M. gigas in coastal areas of the Eastern Adriatic and to provide a baseline for the future monitoring and assessment programmes of the species. Distribution of M. gigas was determined by three different methods: (i) a visual census of the presence of M. gigas specimens in the medio-littoral zone; (ii) DNA identification of M. gigas larvae in the water column; and (iii) the presence of M. gigas in the subtidal zone at depth between 25 and 40 m. Magallana gigas has a well-established population in the medio-littoral zone of natural and anthropogenic habitats along the coast of the North-eastern Adriatic Sea (west coast of Istria peninsula), but it is not present in the deeper layers . In the Central-eastern and South-eastern Adriatic Sea, the species was either absent or sporadically recorded with no evidence of fully established populations. Considering the great invasion success of M. gigas worldwide and effects that this species could have on the invaded ecosystem (e.g. competition for food and space with native species), detailed future monitoring is needed for the Eastern Adriatic Sea.
