Systematically Assessing Student Use of Canvas-Embedded Asynchronous Information Literacy Modules in Georgetown’s Master of Professional Studies Programs
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2023-04-03 DOI: 10.1080/1533290X.2023.2219258

Abstract Academic libraries increasingly offer information literacy instruction online. This mixed methods study, innovatively focused on graduate professional studies students, confirms that the provision of asynchronous modules represents an effective and scalable method in this regard. When Georgetown’s SCS librarians embedded their faculty-endorsed modules in courses’ Canvas, the majority of students engaged with the modules in the order and scope planned for by the librarians, reported building key information literacy competencies, and were generally satisfied with the modules’ content and design. They also perceived the modules as a valuable solo instructional resource, pointing to their viability to achieve budgetary and staffing efficiencies.

Abstract The Library and Information Center (LIC) of Patras’ University and the Hellenic Open University Distance Library and Information Center constitute two academic libraries that serve two different academic institutions types. By the time of the first phase of the outbreak (spring 2019) they attempted to respond multidimensionally to the emerging needs, aspiring tο a seamless provision of services. Currents’ research primary objective is to record and compare their actions identifying any differences in their crisis management behavior. The study offers an overview of services offered by libraries that have limited resources and presents their attempt to remain effective under any circumstances.

Using the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy to Revise a for-Credit, Online Course
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2023-03-17 DOI: 10.1080/1533290X.2023.2190323
Lucinda Ward, Tom Kmetz
Abstract A recent revamping of a three-credit-hour course, which the library at Morehead State University has offered for more than two decades, prompted the authors to contemplate what it means to modernize information literacy instruction in a credit-bearing format. For the authors, this modernization meant both committing to asynchronous delivery and adopting the ACRL Framework as the course’s learning objectives. In this paper, we discuss some concerns with the previous course, the revision process, and the major components of the modified course. Some reflections after first teaching the course and subsequent revisions are likewise discussed.

Involuntary Online Learners and the Library: How the Pandemic Closures Affected College Students’ Library Research
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2022-12-09 DOI: 10.1080/1533290X.2022.2149662

Abstract As a result of the coronavirus pandemic, college students across the United States temporarily became online learners regardless of their learning modality preferences. Academic libraries and the student support they offer also went entirely online for extended periods. How did this involuntary online environment affect students’ library research? Using qualitative and quantitative survey data, this study explores the impact of the closures on students’ perceived helpfulness of librarian-led instruction, motivation to conduct research, barriers experienced, and preferred online help-seeking methods. The findings highlight the importance of academic libraries being proactive and flexible in supporting reluctant online learners.
