Abstract In March 2020, many academic librarians were abruptly forced into an online service environment due to the global COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Although some librarians had been providing synchronous video reference consultations prior to the pandemic, evidence of the practice in Library Science literature is scant. This paper presents scenarios sourced from anonymized student responses to a digital badge on the library’s chat reference service to illustrate when a video consultation may be the appropriate modality to address an information need.

Abstract Information Literacy Instruction has a long history of being taught by librarians to online learners. Emerging technologies help librarians increase their ability to meet the needs, learning styles and best practices of providing online ILI to their students. Digital badging is an evolving technology which could help librarians develop their online learning practices in areas including sustainability, personalized learning, and collaboration with academic colleagues. This paper examines established best practices identified in the literature regarding online ILI and gives readers a context of how the best practices align with the use of digital badges in ILI.

Abstract The Distance Library Services Conference was founded in 1982 by the librarians of the Off-Campus Library Services department at Central Michigan University. From its inception through its 18th conference in 2018, Central Michigan University planned and administered this conference for the benefit of librarians serving distance learners and faculty at their institutions. This article discusses the founding of the Distance Library Services Conference and its role as the library profession’s preeminent forum for the exchange of ideas on the topic of distance librarianship.

Abstract This study investigated the relevance of libraries and librarians in distance education programs of Nigerian universities. Investigation was carried out in Federal Universities in the South East Geopolitical Zone of Nigeria using a descriptive survey research design. Five research questions and two null hypotheses guided the study. 138 librarians in these Federal University Libraries made up the population. The instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. Data collected for the study were analyzed using percentages, standard deviation and mean. The hypotheses were tested using t-test at a 0.05 level of significance. The findings among others show that the delivery of interactive tutorials between faculty and librarians would inculcate requisite knowledge to the distance education students.

A Foot in Both Worlds: Current Roles and Challenges of Academic Online Learning Librarians

Tessa Withorn, A. Willenborg
Abstract This qualitative study explores how online learning is defined at academic libraries in the U.S. and examines the current roles and challenges of online learning librarians. Findings from in-depth interviews reveal that approaches to online learning in academic libraries vary in terms of audience and instructional strategies, and that online learning librarians perform several roles within the institution and often face challenges related to those roles. These findings suggest that while academic libraries have defined their approaches to online learning, the functional role of the online learning librarian should be clearly delineated and leveraged to support sustainable online learning initiatives at the institution. Based on these findings, the authors make recommendations for librarians and library administrators to support this evolving area of librarianship.

Abstract Eswatini has been impacting and sourcing Library and information science education in training from foreign institutions due to a shortage of institutions offering Library and Information Science (LIS) training. The relevance of sending people for training in other countries has been a great concern for the government of Eswatini. The expense and complexity of sending employees out of the country for training have caused problem many organizations due to their absence from the office. This study, therefore, investigates the development of an open distance e-learning (ODeL) curriculum for the LIS program in Eswatini and proposes strategies in this regard.

Information Seeking Behavior of Distance Learners: What has Changed in Twenty Years?
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2020-01-02 DOI: 10.1080/1533290x.2020.1791301
S. Oliveira, N. Greenidge
Abstract Studies from many parts of the world report the success and concerns librarians face when connecting online with the universities’ off-campus students. This 20-year review attempts to determine the extent to which academic libraries around the world serve the information needs of graduate students enrolled in distance-learning programs and to examine their information-seeking behaviors to ascertain how these students access material for their online courses. The analysis consisted of determining the (1) frequency of library use by off-campus students, (2) students’ level of awareness, (3) students’ seeking assistance strategies, (4) students’ use of services and sources, and (5) success in meeting students’ needs and satisfaction. The data resulting from these investigations indicate that, in general, students at a distance are relatively satisfied with the services and resources their university library is offering, although the majority of the students prefer to utilize other sources of information before they seek assistance from a librarian or venture into searching the library’s website. Engagement with the library could be a key factor positively influencing students’ learning experience, which might contribute to the library’s, and thus the university’s, reaching its goals and ultimately, its mission. Challenges for meeting student’s needs and satisfaction level are also described in this literature review.
