Abstract The article describes a proposal for a skills-based training course, including the methodology involved and results obtained. In this online course, the areas of competence and the teaching method adopted draw from the precepts of visual literacy. Gamification is the approach adopted to encourage student participation in and engagement with the learning process. The findings corroborate the effectiveness and replicability of this educational toolkit and identify online library services as essential partners. The collaboration of such services is ideal for implementing the proposal for online university training. One line of action suggested in this regard is to use academic skills centers (ASC) to link library resources to non-formal digital skills training in pursuit of academic excellence.

Welcome to the final issue of the Journal of Library & Information Services in Distance Learning for 2021. I hope the articles we have for you in this issue will be of interest. In our lead article, “Student and Instructor Perceptions of Virtual Library Instruction Sessions,” Jessica L. Bennett discusses a study she undertook to determine if instructors and students had opinions about virtual library instruction and if there were any preferences to synchronous over watching recorded sessions. Migule-Angle Marzal and Sara Martinez Cardama provide details on their proposal for an online, skills-based training course. In their article, “Gamification as a Strategy for Visual Literacy Skills-Based Education: A Proposal for Educational Libraries,”Marzal and Cardama suggest using a gamification approach in a collaborative setting to encourage and engage the students in the learning process. In our next article, “Training Strategies for Library Staff and Remote Clients in Academic Libraries Operating in a Distance Education Environment During COVID-19,” Tinyiko Vivian Dube discusses research into training strategies for those working in academic libraries in South Africa. Dube relates how if library staff are trained, they can provide better service to the distance education population. Christian Mubofu and Andrew Malekani detail how the distance learners at the Open University of Tanzania feel about the accessibility of their library’s resources and services. Their article, “Accessibility of Library Resources and Support Services by Distance Learners,” discusses the results of a study they preformed along with recommendations for improvements. We conclude this issue with an article by Kate-Riin Kont and Siret Piirsalu, “Library Services in Spring 2020: Feedback Survey in Tallinn Health Care College.” In their study, Kont and Piirsalu investigated which services were used the most and which services their users would be needing due to the lockdown caused by COVID-19. Do any of these topics appeal to you? Do you want to know more? If so, this issue is for you! Jodi W. Poe Editor-in-Chief Jpoe@jsu.edu https://doi.org/10.1080/1533290X.2021.2038846

A. Dempsey, Catie Heil
Abstract This article describes the creation and piloting of a series of online information literacy instructional modules intentionally incorporating Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles. Using UDL frameworks to guide different elements of the online modules, the authors have been able to accommodate the challenging learning differences, environments, and circumstances that arose from or were exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The modules were created collaboratively by a team of librarians who had little to no previous experience with distance and online learning initiatives.

Student Engagement With Online Course Content at A Two-Year College
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2021-07-03 DOI: 10.1080/1533290X.2021.1938786
Derek Stadler, M. O’Reilly
Abstract This study looks at the effectiveness of online learning at the community college level and at how instructors can design courses to help students succeed and persist. Using a one-credit course that teaches effective research skills, this study examines whether two-year college students follow the same pattern as four-year students, accessing course materials they deem necessary to earn a good grade. The authors hypothesize that the frequency of accessing course content is greater at a community college because students depend on resources that provide both direct and indirect support in order to complete an online course.

Abstract The onset of the 2020 pandemic caused traditional in-person library instruction to expeditiously move to virtual environments. In an effort to maintain the personalized human touch and interactions that occur between librarians, students, and faculty, the constructs of teaching presence were embedded into online informational literacy sessions at a small private institution in the Northeast region of the United States. This article explores the integration of teaching presence to humanize virtual library instruction. Findings and implications of this study can inform future work of librarian educators as online instruction continues to increase at higher education institutions.

The conceptualization of processes for handling online requests of information resources in academic libraries in South Africa: Experience from an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) environment
Q2 Social Sciences Pub Date : 2021-05-27 DOI: 10.1080/1533290X.2021.1880526
Tinyiko Vivian Dube
Abstract This article aims to present the Open Distance eLearning library processes for requesting information resources using the Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC). OPAC is known as a platform used by library clients to check the availability of information resources from the entire library collection. ODeL libraries also use the OPAC, not as a library catalogue, but as a portal for requesting information resources. The processes presented in this articles starts from when the library clients request information resources when the requests reach the library/library staff, how the online requests are handled when received, how they are sent to the requesters, how the information resources are sent back to the library after use by the requesters and the process of receiving the returned information resources.
