The relationship between Emotional Intelligence and psychological distress among students in College of Nursing, Gombe state. The research design for the study was Correlation design. A Null hypothesis was formulated to guide the study. The population was all the students of the College of Nursing Gombe. ‘Schutte Self-Report Emotional Intelligence Test’ (SSEIMT) ‘Scale and ‘Kessler Psychological Distress Scale’ were adapted and used as Instruments for data collection. Two experts from the department of Educational Foundation Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, Bauchi validated the two instruments. The internal consistency of the instruments showed Cronbach’s, for emotional intelligence scale is 0.86 and 0.64 for Psychological Distress scale respectively. Two hundred and twenty-five (225) Nursing students participated in the study. Ethical approval was obtained from the College Management. Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to analyze the Null hypothesis. The findings of the study revealed that, most of the participants had high level of emotional intelligence and were experiencing low degree of psychological distress; it was concluded that the higher the level of emotional intelligence the lower experiencing of psychological distress by the Nursing students. Therefore, it is recommended that further exploration to better understanding of emotional intelligence and Psychological distress. Moreover, there is need to include coping strategies in the Nursing curriculum to enhance managing the emotional intelligence.

This study was conducted to determine the influence of digital technology on undergraduate students’ academics. It was guided by two objectives and one null hypothesis. Descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. A sample of 378 undergraduate students was used for the study using a multistage sampling technique. Perceived Influence of Digital Technology on Undergraduate Students’ Academics Questionnaire (PIDTUSAQ) was used as an instrument for data collection. Cronbach Alpha analysis was used to estimate the internal consistency of the instrument and reliability coefficient value of 0.79. Research question was answered with descriptive statistics of mean and standard deviation. The null hypothesis was tested using independent t-test at 0.05 level of significance. Data analysis was done using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 23. Findings revealed negative influence of digital technology on undergraduate students’ academics as most of the students struggle with balancing the use of their smart phones/computers for pleasure and proper academic engagement. It was also discovered that gender had influence on the impact of digital technology on undergraduate students’ academics with females being the most influenced. Based on this, it was recommended that time management should be emphasized among undergraduate students to prevent distractions orchestrated by the inappropriate use of digital technology. Time hiatus for essential activity should be recognized and organized by students.

Education of citizens is a right enshrined in diverse documents of the international organization evidenced by declarations and treaties. This right was truncated by COVID-19 pandemic when schools were closed in almost every country at diverse times. Apart from live learning centres being shutdown, several other challenges financial constraints, unemployment, poor learning and academic achievement emanated from the pandemic which jeopardize the educationally vulnerable adult learners. Hence, the emergence of asynchronous strategies of transmitting knowledge to learners. These strategies include distance, online, zoom and mass media learning methods. These new ways of learning have the tendencies of absorbing the effect of the pandemic and curtailing the spread of the virus as well as improving the standard of learning environment and societal development. The study recommends that; infrastructure of the online or distance education system needs to be strengthened; access to every adult learner should be established; in-service training should be provided to instructors in order to improve instructors’ distance or online teaching competencies.

Students with special needs are facing a number of problems which they are finding difficult to cope with. In the light of this, this study examined the coping strategies of students with special needs in Gombe State. The demographic variables of gender and type of disability were tested on the respondents’ view. The research design adopted for this study was a descriptive survey. A multi-stage sampling technique was employed to select 257 participants in the study. However, 216 questionnaire forms were valid for data analysis. The instrument used was entitled “Coping Strategies of Students with Special Needs Questionnaire (CSSSNQ)”. Test re-test method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument as co-efficient of 0.73 was obtained. Mean and rank order was used to answer the research questions raised, while t-test and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) were employed to test the hypotheses formulated at 0.05 level of significance. The findings revealed that some of the coping strategies employed by these students are working hard to solve their own problems individually, accepting special needs condition as God wishes and avoiding thinking about special needs situation. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that parents of children with special needs should provide for their personal and educational needs so that they can be able to benefit from teaching/learning process; the society should give strong financial, emotional and medical supports to students with special needs to enable them to adjust effectively to school environment; the school counsellors should, on regular basis, help students with special needs with emotional support and anxiety alleviation techniques so that they can become less apprehensive about their future and be able to achieve success in their educational endeavors.
