Multipoint sensing measurement with fine resolution was developed using multimode interference optical fibers, working as refractive index (RI) sensors. They were operated with a fine calibration technique using a wavelength selective optical filter and defined-wavelength-light from a tunable laser source. Average RI resolution is 4.3 ×10−6 RIU under multipoint sensing conditions.

A grating coupler that employs multiple Nb2O5/SiO2 layers is designed to improve the input/output efficiency in the Nb2O5- based integrated probe for two-dimensional cross-sectional velocity distribution measurements. As the result of simulation, the efficiency was improved by increasing the number of the Nb2O5/SiO2 layers over the assumed input/output angles and wavelengths.

Quasi phase matching (QPM) crystals using GaN were designed and fabricated for the development of ultraviolet lasers. GaN-QPM crystals were fabricated by the double polarity selective area growth (DP-SAG). As a result of optical measurement using such fabricated crystals, second harmonic generation (SHG) due to phase matching was confirmed.

We propose a novel, highly sensitive, and stable fiber-optic temperature sensing method that utilizes the temperature dependence of the gain of an amplified-spontaneous-emission feedback circuit. It is experimentally demonstrated that the method achieves a long-term temperature resolution of 0.0147 °C.

Mid-infrared Quantum cascade lasers (QCLs) opens the way for many applications thanks to “fingerprint region of molecules”. In recent years, the emergence of external cavity broadband wavelength-swept QCLs have been providing new benefits not found in FTIR such as compactness and faster wavelength scanning due to MOEMS technology.

We present the characterization of micro-lenses that are fabricated with the technology of two-photon polymerization (2PP)-based direct laser writing. We fabricate multiple lenses with different exposure parameters, after which we use interferometric characterization tools to investigate their geometry and optical performance to optimize the fabrication strategy.

We report about the optical properties of the silk fibroin layers fabricated onto the polymer foils and allyl diglycol carbonate plastic substrate. Waveguiding properties were measured by m-line spectroscopy and optical losses by the fibre scanning method. The optical losses were lower than 0.30 dB/cm at 846.4 and 1549.1 nm.
