Nowadays, various transportation means use Linux as the operating system for their embedded control systems; however Linux uses all the processes in the hardware equally. This motivates some designer to develop an entire new Operating System for the vehicle; where a modification of Linux can produce the same and even a better product. This paper explains how this modification was designed and implemented in a commercial transportation company.

Multiple description coding (MDC) is one of source coding techniques which generate several descriptions from a single data. A decoder of MDC reconstructs the data from these descriptions. Even if some descriptions are lost, the decoder can reconstruct a similar data from the other descriptions. Therefore, this coding technique is expected to apply applications which prefer accepting error of data to retransmitting the lost or erroneous data over multipath noisy network. Multiple description correlating transforms coding (MDCTC) is a method to realize MDC with a matrix. Based on this method, this paper proposes the method, ratio configurable multiple description correlating transforms coding (RMDCTC), which can adjust the data size ratio among descriptions to fit the ratio of channel bandwidths. The proposed method is suitable to apply error allowable communicating applications over asymmetric multipath noisy network. Mathematical analysis and experimental results verify the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A new hybrid predictive coding scheme for lossy data compression is introduced and studied here. The proposed technique attempts to improve the compression performance of a conventional adaptive predictive coder through three levels of prediction. The first level estimates and removes a time-varying mean signal. The second level uses DFT and IDFT to estimate and remove the predictable high frequency subband component of the signal, whereas the third level performs the adaptive predictive coding of the smoothed signal. The resultant residual is then quantized using an adaptive quantizer with 3 and 5 levels. Experimental results based on a group of test signals seem to indicate that the proposed hybrid scheme can improve the lossy compression achievable using a conventional adaptive predictive coder.

Recently, tele-operation of the robot is needed with getting force information. To realize tele-operation with force feedback, high accuracy force control is essential. However, torsional vibration of multi-mass resonant system is a serious problem to operate robots. Vibration suppression in motion control system is important problem in industry applications. In this paper, the system that is 3-mass resonant system is considered. This paper proposes a bilateral control of 3-mass resonant system. The resonance control is implemented to the system to reduce vibration. Also, the inverse system is implemented to reject load disturbance. A load disturbance is estimated by load disturbance observer. The estimation method does not need parameter identification. The determination method of pole placement is discussed. The viability of the proposed method is confirmed by some experiments.

In this paper, we introduce a mathematical approach for modeling the bus priority system. The main objective is to highlight the problem of the bus priority dilemma. The mathematical approach is based on Petri Nets with inhibitor arc. Based on dioid algebra, we add a new constraint that models the resource sharing problem with a priority user. The system behavior is described by equations -linear equations. As a result, the proposed approach provides us with interesting performance evaluation, such as real-time counts of cars and buses which correspond to best priority-configurations. An example is worked out to highlight the bus priority dilemma. This example allows obtaining of interesting observations about the relevance of bus priority in a congested traffic network.

In modern high power industrial processes, multipulse cycloconverters are fundamental to feed synchronous motors. Given the importance of these critical processes, especially for mining industry, the reliability of the high power drive is critical. Having a non-invasive system capable of detecting and isolating faults in the thyristors is quite valuable and it will reduce the economic losses caused by long repair times of the converter. Currently it is difficult and in some cases almost impossible to determine which of the SCRs experience an over-current or those which do not trigger properly causing a malfunction. In this paper, we present a new method of online detection which is capable of delivering information about the SCR involved in a failure and the nature of it. This new method takes only a few input and output measurements (non-invasive feature) already available in the most of industrial cycloconverters and performs a timing analysis of these measurements. The algorithms of the method estimate and analyze the switching states of all thyristors, providing an impressive way of detecting the cause and consequences of the failure in the cycloconverter.

Electricity in remote communities is usually provided by diesel power plants at relatively high costs. This issue can be addressed with the addition of renewable energy sources such as wind and PV. However, due to the intermittent and fluctuating characteristics of the power produced by these sources, the dispatch of the diesel gensets for operation with variable (droop-based) frequency, high efficiency and reduced unit cycling becomes more difficult. A battery energy storage system (BESS) with a suitable control strategy can simplify this task and improve the power quality. This paper discusses the operation of a hybrid system with a three-phase diesel power plant and a single-phase distribution network with intermittent sources. The per-phase dq control scheme used in the BESS allows energy management with superior power quality for operation with variable frequencies

Color image demosaicking aims to reconstruct the full-resolution RGB image from a mosaicked Color Filter Array (CFA) image. Instead of reconstructing the red, green, and blue color channels separately, most demosaicking approaches mutually recover them. However, CFA images tend to be distorted by the non-ideal response of the camera sensor, and possible motion or out-of-focus blurs during the acquisition. Demosaicking followed by deblurring is sub-optimal because demosaicking errors will be propagated into deblurring and amplified by the latter. This paper presents a regularization approach to jointly deblur and demosaic CFA images. By embedding a non-linear demosaicking algorithm into a regularized restoration method, the full-color RGB image can be recovered and refined iteratively. The numerical and visual results show that our approach is superior to other methods.

A modulation method for capacitor voltage ripple reduction of the switched-capacitor inverter using series/parallel conversion (SCISPC) is proposed. The phase shifted pulse width modulation (PWM) method and the level shifted PWM method are applied to the proposed modulation method. The two capacitors in the 7-level SCISPC is charged alternately by this modulation method. The voltage ripple of these capacitors can be small because the discharging term becomes short. The switching frequency of the proposed modulation method can be reduced. The high efficiency power conversion of the SCISPC is achieved because of the low voltage ripple of the capacitors. The effect of the proposed modulation method is confirmed by the simulation with PSIM and the circuit experiment. The voltage ripple reduction of the capacitors is 33.7% in the simulation result.

Modern manufacturing systems have to continuously adapt to variable custom environment, satisfy to discerning expectations of customers and maintain in the increasing competition. Nowadays, manufacturing plants are very complex, in many cases distributed, composed of many subsystems with different functions that are exchanging a vast amount of data, i.e. events. In the case of observable malfunction, the amount of events grows substantially and during the system resurgence can lead to information explosion. We describe a few methods to help system's users to mitigate this information explosion and introduce an agent-based expert system proposal that will be able to provide a solution to a new arisen problem that is possible to be revealed from automated recognition of communication patterns. Such an expert system should also provide users with user-friendly manufacturing plant processes overview and management; allow searching for event patterns and simplifying the event processing.
