The Effect of Supplementation of Vetch (Vicia villosa) on Performance of Arsi-Bale Sheep Fed Basal diet of Desho (Pennisetum pedicellatum) grass 在基础饲粮中添加紫薇对Arsi-Bale羊生产性能的影响

ABSTRACT This study was conducted to investigate the effects of Vicia villosa supplementation to the basal diet of desho grass hay on feed intake, growth performance, and carcass characteristics of the Arsi-Bale sheep. Twenty-four lambs were assigned by stratified randomization based on their initial body weight into six blocks consisting of four lambs per block to four dietary treatments. Desho grass hay was fed free choice to all experimental lambs whereas 0, 150, 300 and 450 g of Vicia villosa was supplemented to animals. The results showed that the daily DM intake and daily body weight gain of experimental sheep showed significant improvement (P < 0.05) with increased level of inclusion of Vicia villosa into the basal ration. It can be concluded that the supplementation of 450 g of Vicia villosa hay to desho grass hay had a positive effect on growth performance and carcass characteristics of Arsi-Bale sheep.

Structure, conduct and performance of live animal markets of small ruminants in South India 南印度小型反刍动物市场的结构、行为和表现

ABSTRACT An attempt was made to ascertain the structure, conduct and performance of live small ruminant markets in live animal markets (shandies) in Southern India. Pertaining to the study, data were collected from 300 market functionaries selected through multi-stage random sampling from 30 live animal markets in South India. Suitable statistical analyses were applied to achieve the objectives of the study. The market structure of small ruminants was observed to be ‘Atomistically competitive’. The volume of business/number of animals transacted was found to be more or less equal among the market functionaries. The variables, such as age, sex, utility of animal and festival season, were the significant variables in the price determination of small ruminants during their sale in live animal markets. The infrastructure facilities available in selected shandies were inadequate. Necessary recommendations were made to improve the efficiency of marketing of small ruminants.

Grass/clover silage for growing/finishing pigs – effect of silage pre-treatment and feeding strategy on growth performance and carcass traits 生长肥育猪用草/三叶草青贮——青贮预处理和饲喂策略对生长性能和胴体性状的影响

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the influence of feeding strategy and grass/clover silage pre-treatment on pig growth performance and carcass traits. In total, 128 pigs weighing 30–110 kg were fed either a commercial control feed or received silage in a pellet (SP) or in a total mixed ratio (TMR) containing chopped silage (SC) or intensively treated silage (SE). Silage replaced 20% of dietary crude protein content (g/kg). Diet affected weight gain (P = 0.001), with pigs fed the SP diet showing best overall growth performance. Pigs fed the SC diet had the lowest weight gain (P = 0.001), while pigs fed the SE diet performed similarly to those fed the control diet. Carcass weight and dressing percentage differed between the diets (P = 0.016 and P = 0.018), but there was no difference in lean meat content (P = 0.832). The results show satisfactory growth performance and carcass traits, indicating that silage can replace other protein sources in growing/finishing pig diets.

ABSTRACT This study compared use of byproduct-based concentrates and a control feed based on cereal grains and soybean meal in dairy cow diets and evaluated effects on the environment and feed costs. To achieve a nutrient-dense feed ration to dairy cows byproducts are commonly combined with cereal grains and protein-rich feeds such as soybean meal. The present analysis was based on experimental data for high-yielding dairy cows showing that feeding concentrate based on byproducts gives similar milk yield as feeding concentrate based on cereal grains and soybean meal. Evaluation of the different concentrates using life cycle assessment showed that using byproducts required less cropland (−35%), reduced carbon footprint (−20%) and lowered eutrophication potential (−20%) compared with the control. Energy use was higher (+30%), due to the need for drying wet byproducts. Feed costs per kg energy-corrected milk did not differ between the feeds, which is beneficial from a sustainability perspective.

ABSTRACT The objective of this study was to assess the chemical composition and in vitro digestibility of residues of five pearl millet varieties and to investigate their effect on the performance of sheep. Thirty castrated male Bali-Bali sheep were randomly assigned to five treatments. Four dual-purpose millet varieties and one local variety-Somno were used. Sheep were fed ad libitum for 90 days with the stover of five millet varieties, complemented with cowpea hay. Stover of varieties ICMV167005 and ICMV167002 showed a tendency for a higher nitrogen content (1.0%) and in vitro digestibility (51.3% and 51.8%, respectively) compared to stover of other varieties. Significant differences were observed in average daily live weight gain. The animals fed with stover of the variety ICMV167005 in their diet had higher average daily live weight gain compared with others. We conclude that ICMV167005 is a promising variety for improving the productive performance of sheep.

Effect of graded levels of red grape pomace (Vitis vinifera L.) powder on physiological and meat quality responses of Japanese quail 分级红葡萄渣粉对日本鹌鹑生理和肉质反应的影响

ABSTRACT This study evaluated the effect of dietary red grape pomace (RGP) powder on physiological and meat quality responses of Japanese quail. Three hundred quail birds were randomly distributed to five dietary treatments formulated as follows: a negative control diet without antibiotics (NegCon); a positive control diet with antibiotics (PosCon); NegCon diluted with RGP at a rate of 1.5% (RGP15), 3.5% (RGP35), and 5.5% (RGP55). Diet RGP55 promoted higher (p < 0.05) overall feed intake (934.3 g/bird) than diet RGP35 (809.2 g/bird). The NegCon diet promoted the highest breast meat lightness (L*) value (46.1) while the lowest value (42.7) was observed in RGP35 meat. In conclusion, quail birds reared on RGP-containing diets had similar physiological and meat quality parameters as those on the antibiotic-containing diet. An optimum inclusion level could not be determined using the physiological and meat quality responses, suggesting a need to investigate higher levels of dietary RGP.

ABSTRACT The aim of the study was to evaluate performance for beef carcass grading using a novel semi-automatic method compared to human classifiers. The novelty was measuring carcass length as a predictor. The grading is given as conformation and fat cover as defined by the EUROP classification system. A training set was used to fit the model with predictors based on weight, age, breed and sex, in addition to length. Prediction performance was evaluated for a test set including carcasses graded by Norwegian classifiers, and a separate test set for carcasses graded by international classifiers. The precision for conformation was high (Pearson correlation ≥ 0.94) for both test sets, but the precision for fat cover was lower (Pearson correlation range 0.30–0.91). High correlation for conformation, together with low bias estimates, provides indication that the objective method is equipped to replace the previous human classifier system for conformation in Norway.

ABSTRACT The study investigated the effect of plant maturity of grass silage on intramuscular fat (IMF) concentration and fatty acid profile in M. longissimus thoracis of bulls. From 7 to 8 months of age until slaughter, 36 bulls of Norwegian Red were offered grass silage harvested at three maturity stages ad libitum, with or without concentrate supplement. Increasing plant maturity decreased the proportion of α-linolenic acid in IMF (P = 0.04). Concentrate supplementation increased the proportions in IMF of linoleic acid (P < 0.001) and C20:3n-6 (P < 0.008), decreased all analysed n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (P ≤ 0.02), conjugated linoleic acid (P < 0.01) and trans vaccenic acid (P < 0.001). Polyunsaturated fatty acids n-6/n-3 ratios were in the range 1.0–2.1 and increased with plant maturity and concentrate supplementation. Results suggest that ‘grass-fed beef’ also may be produced indoors with grass silages in regions with short grazing season.

ABSTRACT Ethiopia’s 60 million chickens are reared primarily in free range, smallholder systems. Therefore, upgrading smallholder poultry to small-scale commercial systems is central to rural development. With the aim of providing access to improved chicken by rural farmers in Ethiopia, the live body weight at week 17 and number of eggs per bird per week for one locally improved and three tropically adapted dual-purpose chicken strains was tested through a project called the African Chicken Genetic Gains. Both traits were analyzed by fitting a linear mixed model with week and pen as random effects, and station and breed as fixed effects. The result showed that both breed and station effects were significant for both traits. The introduced breeds performed better than the local improved breed for both traits. Thus, the introduction of system-appropriate high-yielding tropically adapted breeds has the potential to increase the productivity of chicken.

ABSTRACT This study included 6 groups of 6 pregnant ewes with a change-over design. In period 1 group 1, 2 and 3 had access to the water nipples and group 4, 5 and 6 had access to water bowls and vice versa in period 2. In period 3 all six groups had access to both types of water dispensers. The ewes’ water intake was significantly higher when drinking only from water nipples (3.27 ± 0.29 l/ewe and day) than only from water bowls (2.04 ± 0.22 l/ewe and day) (F = 78.28, P < 0.001). The water wastage for nipples was 36% of water usage and negligible for bowls. When offered both dispensers the ewes' water intake tended to be higher from water nipples (t = 0.69, P < 0.10), and there seemed to be no specific preference for water nipples or bowls in ewes.
