Movies are an essential part of our media reception. They have been used as a tool for learning foreign languages from the very beginning, but this trend has been growing in recent years. This quantitative study explores the attitudes of teachers from secondary schools in Slovakia to the use of audio-visual media as teaching material, and surveys how they apply AV material in German language lessons. A total 109 teachers participated in the survey, conducted in 2018–2020. The findings indicate that mostly short audio-visual formats, primarily educational videos, are integrated into German lessons at secondary schools, and that teachers usually apply tasks that are familiar from reading and listening activities. Creative interpretative methods are not given enough space.

The aim of this article is to explore the depiction of nature and its elements in Klostermannʼs early German short stories. These stories were mostly published during the 1880s in the Prague-based German-language newspaper Politik. Eleven of the stories, published by Gerold Dvorak at the Stutz Publishing House in Passau under the title Faustins Geschichten aus dem Böhmerwald (2003), were selected for the research. A further aim of the study is to explore how the literary landscape was constituted in these short stories. The research is based on the principles of hermeneutic analysis.

By analyzing specific comparative structures, the article demonstrates how Karlin uses this syntactic-structural model quantitatively and stylistically in the above-mentioned novel. Based on the results of this analysis and considering the potential recipients of Karlín’s works, the paper characterizes the stylistic functions of these structures. It shows how specific stylistic features demonstrate Karlin’s linguistic awareness and instincts.

This article deals with the use of idioms featuring the names of body parts in political speech, specifically in parliamentary debates. Its aim is to investigate the frequency of occurrence of idioms featuring the names of body parts. Accordingly, it investigates which names of body parts occur most frequently in German and Kosovar parliamentary debates. A further aim of the study is to examine the communicative-pragmatic performance of idioms featuring the names of body parts in this genre. As is well known, politicians often use idioms with the aim of expressing emotions and attitudes about certain events and thereby creating a degree of closeness to their voters.

Nowadays, anglicisms seem to be indispensable in the language of sport – as in other professional languages. However, the sports considered in this study differ greatly as to their origin and the importance of teams from English-speaking regions (England regarding football, North America regarding ice hockey, whereas in handball there is no English-speaking influence). This results in linguistic differences regarding the frequency and professional relevance of anglicisms in each sport. These differences are investigated and compared taking into account morphological, semantic and sociolinguistic aspects.

In order to track down the devices used in the verbal expression of emotions, it is helpful to proceed semasiologically, for example by searching for emotive expressions in authentic texts. In texts written in everyday language, emotions are frequently verbalized without designating any particular emotion. Therefore, the pertinent linguistic devices should be identified with the aid of a small corpus, because only in this way can corpus-linguistic principles of exhaustivity and context-sensitivity be fulfilled. This brings into focus syntactic devices, which have so far (for the most part) been neglected by research in the field of emotiology

This article deals with the use of afinite constructions (auxiliary ellipsis) in a famous German novel of the 17th century: Grimmelshausen’s Simplicissimus. According to a study by Andersson, these constructions are used to create symmetrical clause endings. However, Andersson’s study has philological and methodological shortcomings because it is based on a problematic edition of the Simplicissimus, it uses vague criteria, and it does not reflect the crucial linguistic unit for complex constructions in the 17th century: the rhetorical period. Therefore, Andersson’s survey is repeated here under more adequate conditions.

The article focuses on the aspect of family in the period after the First World War as portrayed in Georg K. Glaser’s novel Secret and Violence (Geheimnis und Gewalt). The novel depicts the division of a family caused by the brutality of the father, who has returned from the war and has become completely estranged from his family. The paper finds a parallel between the plot of the novel and the political and social events that unfolded in Germany during the first half of the 20th century, which split society and thus often caused a complete alienation among people. In the novel, the Weimar Republic is presented as a battleground of progressive and radically ideological forces, whose success the study seeks to elucidate.

People’s sex life is very often, if not always, taboo in everyday life. The theming of this area of life is made possible by various linguistic means that allow one to speak about this content. Phraseological units also serve this purpose. The starting point of this article is the definition of phrasemes according to Burger (2015:11): “Firstly, they [phraseologisms] consist of more than one word; secondly, the words are not put together for this one occasion, but are combinations of words that we, as German speakers, know exactly in this combination (possibly with variants), similar to how we know German words as individual items”. In addition, it is noteworthy that thanks to the characteristic of idiomaticity (cf. Fleischer 1982:30), this taboo is particularly reinforced. At the center of our analysis are phrasemes related to sex life. The research material was taken from German and Polish dictionaries. The purpose of the presentation is to create a typology of thematic areas which are characterized with the help of phrasemes relating to sex life in German and Polish. The article is based on the following definition of a taboo: “an unwritten law that forbids doing certain things based on certain beliefs within a society” (Duden 2015:1735).

School is not the only institution that educates children and provides them with specialised information. Television also contributes substantially to education. The article deals with the question of how the authors of educational programmes for children handled the difficult task of educating children while capturing their attention at the same time. This issue is examined using the example of selected German and Czech television programmes for children with the topic of biology, and attention is paid especially to the choice of language when working with specialised terms and to the specific procedures of defining or explaining them. Also monitored is whether or not the strategy of introducing new specialised terms in the analysed children programmes is different in terms of quality from the strategies applied in popular science programmes for adults with comparable topics.
