Maria Therese von Artner, born in 1772, is one of the almost forgotten German authors born in what is now Slovakia, which at the time was Upper Hungary. She was interested in various aspects of the social and political upheavals in the Habsburg Monarchy and in Europe around 1800, especially the everyday reality of women’s lives. Against the background of contemporary socio-historical conditions, this study examines the self-image of the author, who lived and worked on the periphery of cultural centres and whose writing was determined by her personal artistic ambitions and the literary trends of the time.
Maria Therese von Artner,

The famous verses from Goethe’s ‚Faust I‘ Mein schönes Fräulein, darf ich wagen, / Meinen Arm und Geleit Ihr anzutragen? and Margarethe’s answer Bin weder Fräulein, weder schön, / Kann ungeleitet nach Hause gehn. repeatedly provoke discussion about why Margarethe emphasizes that she is not a Fräulein. It is also clear from other passages in the text, especially in the use of personal names, that Goethe likes to cite historical usage of language. We know that Goethe read early New High German texts, so we can assume that Goethe was concerned with earlier language use. Language history, especially word history, thus becomes an important tool for adequately understanding Goethe’s texts.

This article focuses on the use of musical terminology in new contexts which have no connection with the original musical context. In these new contexts, musical terms are used in a figurative meaning, serving as metaphors to describe often highly complicated aspects of reality. Based on the journalistic texts in the DeReKo corpus, the paper explores the ratio between the use of selected terms in musical contexts and non-musical contexts, investigates which aspects of reality are described via musical terminology, and analyzes the functions that these metaphors perform.

Franz Grillparzer’s dramas ‘König Ottokars Glück und Ende’ and ‘Ein Bruderzwist in Habsburg’ feature two ruler figures who exhibit Promethean traits. These are King Ottokar and Archduke Mathias. The study investigates the Promethean nature of these figures by relating them to the figure of Prometheus, which appears in the texts of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.

The aim of the article is to present this short story as a turning point in Weiß’s literary work, as his departure from expressionist influences that ushers in his existential period. The theoretical basis for an analysis of the plot draws from psychoanalytical theories of object relations (e.g. works by Fairbairn, Guntrip, Seinfeld and others), especially in connection with the so-called schizoid personality. It is in the relationality of the disillusioned protagonist that the interpretive key is sought, a key to the departure from the expressionist cult of the individual, replaced in Weiß’s late work by a series of heroes searching for their identity.

The reception of literature written in German in Czechoslovakia after the Second World War was (and still is) in a hybrid position, oscillating between aversion to historical events that still resonate in Czech culture and society, and interest due to intensive cultural contacts and exchange projects between Germany and the Czech Republic. The reception of works by Paul Celan was all the more complicated because Jewish issues were by and large considered undesirable by the communist regime. The regime was officially only anti-Zionist, but de facto, as is well known, this meant anti-Semitic. In this article, attention is drawn to a neglected aspect of the surprising history of the reception of Celan’s poems in Czechoslovakia between 1945 and 1989 (with a brief excursion into the period 1990–2020) – namely, the “mediating function” of paratexts in the totalitarian regime. The first part briefly presents a definition of the term “paratext” and outlines the function of this type of text (taking into account the specific situation in which literature found itself in socialist Czechoslovakia). The following part illustrates the “mediating function” of paratexts in the Czechoslovak and the Czech editions of Celan’s poems.

The concepts of culture and cultural transfer are concepts that “travel” between disciplines, and they need a clearer definition in the context of Translation Studies. Relying on interpretations and definitions of culture and cultural transfer that are common in German studies and German-language Translation Studies, I present my own views of the understanding of both concepts. In the cognitive-communicative dimension, I outline the model of cultural transfer within the boundaries of literary translation.

This paper discusses striking, ‘bizarre’ features of textual design and language use in the Baroque period. These features include high complexity, prolixity, conspicuous formulas of politeness, indirectness, mixing of style levels, and the extensive use of a ‘squiggly’ script and other typographic devices. The perspective of social history and history of mentality is used to explain these phenomena. In particular, this paper reflects the influence of the estates in society and the role of confessional differences.

Our study focuses on expiring relationships between language policy in the educational context and the users of foreign languages (i.e. pupils). The theoretical part of the study introduces the term language policy and indicates its development in the Czech Republic over the recent years. The empirical part aims to describe how the pupils perceive the German language. Methodologically, we use qualitative analysis of language portraits and interviews. The research sample consists of 25 students (8th grade). Our results show the instrumentalized function of the German language and focus on the usage of the German language. Based on our results, we suggest some changes in language policy that would better fit pupils’ perceptions of languages.

The article explores the literary depiction of Prince Karl Max Lichnowsky in the autobiographical novel ‘Ein Herr aus Bolatitz’ by August Scholtis. Attention is paid to the comparison of literary form with the historical reality. An account of Prince Karl Max Lichnowsky’s diplomatic career is embedded into an overview of Scholtis’s biography and literary work. Attention is also paid to the literary representation of Lichnowsky in other works by Scholtis. However, the information on Prince Karl Max Lichnowsky’s diplomatic career is presented only briefly; the main focus is the literary portrayal of this nobleman in the autobiographical text ‘Ein Herr aus Bolatitz’. This is presented in a hermeneutic framework. The study also outlines literary means of representation and their composition.
