At the August 2020 California Choral Association Choral Summit, Dr. Rollo Dilworth argued that American music education “continues to be problematic and in some ways antithetical to the principals of inclusion, equity, and access” (Dilworth 2020, 1). He calls upon the profession to “chart a new vision of choral music education” that is “a truly inclusive, equitable, and accessible art form” (1). He challenges educators to develop a broader approach to voice training to replace the historically Eurocentric pedagogical lens through which students are assessed and taught. American history reveals that separate is often not equal. Our vocal-choral pedagogical approach at Saint Mary’s College of California (SMC) challenges stylistic separatism, breaking down the historical silos of style that elevate one pedagogy over another, or at least pose obstacles for singers wishing to explore a broad palate of genres. This article outlines the “non genre-biased” approach we have developed at SMC using vocal sciencebased pedagogy to teach a broad spectrum of choral-vocal timbres and genres. We find this approach to be a productive alternative to the bel-canto or “classical” methods Dr. Dilworth cautions as posing negative consequences, and to resonate with national efforts to address diversity, inclusion, and access.

ABSTRACT This article distinguishes a lack of crossover between voice coaches and sound designers and seeks to bridge the gap between the two, as both roles have a direct effect on the sonic product of a theatrical production. The article provides contextual exposition regarding the shift to microphone usage in the theatre and offers a literature review identifying an absence of discipline overlap within both vocal pedagogy and theatrical sound design texts, making reference to directorial literature as well. Using participatory action research and exploratory case study, the article examines when the researcher spent one month coaching a production of Sophie Treadwell’s Machinal at a university in the United States, while working closely with the production’s sound designer. The case study’s analysis includes three proposed solutions to the issues identified and suggestions for bridging the practical gap between voice coaches and sound designers.

In April 2021, I undertook a six-week training program with six classically trained sopranos to provide a series of exercises to strengthen their contemporary mix-belt using basic principles derived from Estill Voice TrainingTM (EVT) (Estill et al. 2010b; Estill Voice 2021). The program was positive, with the singers demonstrating an average stable semitone gain of nearly a perfect fifth and five out of six singers reporting “having a brand-new sound.”

The history of voice training remains one of my primary research interests. Nothing exists in a vacuum, and I am fascinated with how previous voice training continues to influence contemporary ideas. The art vs science debate within voice training endures and perhaps will never end (Winter 2021; de Lillis 2021) Using this dichotomy as a framing device for the voice field may help explain many of the changes and influences of the past 60 years (Sansom 2016). Nevertheless, I recently stumbled across a metaphor that offers an old yet fresh perspective: the mirror and the lamp.

This article continues the tradition of publishing an annual conference “plenary” article. The Voice and Speech Trainers Association (VASTA), this journal’s sponsoring organization, met digitally July 3 through August 1 2021, for its 34th annual conference, “Rising Voices: Listening to the Past, Dismantling the Present, Cultivating a New Future.” The following reflections seek to capture some of the intellectual spark and community spirit of the conference and share them with those members unable to attend.
