A topic modeling analysis for Korean online newspapers: Focusing on the social perceptions of nurses during the COVID-19 epidemic period 韩国网络报纸的主题建模分析:关注新冠肺炎疫情期间护士的社会认知

Purpose: This study explored the meaning of the social perceptions of nurses in online news articles during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic.Methods: A total of 339 nurse-related articles published in Korean online newspapers from January 1 to December 31, 2020, were extracted by entering various combinations of OR and AND with the four words “Corona,” “COVID,” “Nursing,” and “Nurse” as search keywords using BIGKinds, a news database provided by the Korea Press Foundation. The collected data were analyzed with a keyword network analysis and topic modeling using NetMiner 4.Results: The top keywords extracted from the nurse-related news articles were, in the following order, “metropolitan area,” “protective clothing,” “government,” “task,” and “admission.” Four topics representing keywords were identified: “encouragement for dedicated nurses,” “poor work environment,” “front-line nurses working with obligation during the COVID-19 pandemic,” and “nurses' efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19.”Conclusion: The media’s attention to the dedication of nurses, the shortage of nursing resources, and the need for government support is encouraging in that it forms the public opinion necessary to lead to substantial improvements in treating nurses. The nursing community should actively promote policy proposals to improve treatment toward nurses by utilizing the net function of the media and proactively seek and apply strategies to improve the image of nurses working in various fields.

Factors influencing nursing students’ care intentions toward emerging infectious diseases patients: A descriptive-predictive study 护生对新发传染病患者护理意向的影响因素:一项描述性预测研究

Purpose: As coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and other emerging infectious diseases continue to threaten health security, a strategy is required to increase nursing students’ care intention for patients with such diseases. This study aimed to identify factors influencing Korean nursing students’ care intentions in regard to patients with emerging infectious diseases.Methods: The care intention, COVID-19 knowledge level, ethical sensitivity, beliefs, attitudes toward the care intention, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control were investigated using the theory of planned behavior. An online survey was completed from December 2020 to January 2021 by 227 nursing students who had complete a clinical practicum. Descriptive statistics, correlation, and hierarchical regression analyses were conducted on the data.Results: The care intention was higher in men than in women nursing students and in junior than in senior students. Behavioral and normative beliefs, attitude toward the behavior, and perceived behavioral control significantly predicted care intention. Ethical sensitivity increased the predictability of nursing students’ care intentions for emerging infectious disease patients.Conclusion: The theory of planned behavior predicted nursing students’ care intentions for emerging infectious diseases. Therefore, an experience-based response program on emerging infectious diseases is required for nursing students.

Development of Core Competency Scale for clinical nursing student educators 临床护理学生教育工作者核心能力量表的编制

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a Core Competency Scale for clinical nursing student educators.Methods: In this study, we constructed a conceptual framework, selected initial items, verified the content validity, conducted two rounds of Delphi expert consultation, selected secondary and tertiary items, and extracted the final items. The study included 242 clinical educators for nursing students. Item analysis, factor analysis, criterion validity, and internal consistency were used for the data analyses.Results: For the final scale, 35 items were selected and 5 factors were categorized, which together explain 61.7% of the total variance. The factors were education and evaluation, research and cooperation, ethical/legal principles, presenting leadership, and clinical practice. The scores for the scale significantly correlated with the teaching efficacy scale for clinical nursing instructors. The Cronbach’s alpha coefficient for the 35 items was .96.Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrated that the core competency scale has good validity and reliability. This scale can be used to assess the competency of clinical educators for nursing students; hence, it will help in evaluating the relationship between the skills of clinical educators for nursing students and the self-efficacy of those students.

Educational goals and objectives of nursing education programs: Topic modeling 护理教育项目的教育目标和目的:主题建模

Purpose: This study aimed to understand the keywords and major topics of the educational goals and objectives of nursing educational institutions in South Korea.Methods: From May 10 to May 20, 2022, the educational goals and objectives of all 201 nursing educational institutions in South Korea were collected. Using the NetMiner program, degree and degree centrality, semantic structure, and topic modeling were analyzed.Results: The top keywords and semantic structures of educational goals included ‘respect for human (life)-spirit-science-based on, global-competency-professional nurse-nursing personnel-training, professional-science-knowledge-skills, and patients-therapeutic care-relationship.’ The educational goals’ major topics were clients well-being based on science and respect for human life, a practicing nurse with capabilities and spirit, fostering a nursing personnel with creativity and professionalism, and training of global nurses. The top keywords and semantic structures of the educational objectives included ‘holistic care-nursing-research-action-capability, critical thinking-health-problem solving-capability, and efficiency-communication-collaboration-capability.’ The educational objectives’ major topics were ‘nursing professionalism, communication and problem-solving capability; a change of healthcare environments and a progress of nursing practices; fostering professional nurses with creativity and global capability; and clients’ health and nursing practice.’Conclusion: Educational goals in nursing presented specific nursing values and concepts, such as respect for human life, therapeutic care relationships, and the promotion of well-being. Educational objectives in nursing presented the competencies of nurses as defined by the Korean Accreditation Board of Nursing Education (KABONE). Recently, the KABONE announced new program outcomes and competencies, which will require the revision of educational goals. To achieve those educational objectives, it is suggested that the expected level of competencies be clearly defined for nursing graduates.

Awareness of the epidemiological investigation tasks of the nurse in charge of COVID-19 epidemiological investigations COVID-19流行病学调查护士对流行病学调查任务的认识

Purpose: This qualitative study was to understand the awareness of epidemiological investigation tasks for nurses who were in charge of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) epidemiological investigations.Methods: Before data collection, written consent was obtained from 13 participants, and the data were then collected from September 1 to December 31, 2021. Individual interviews were conducted and recorded by video interview using Zoom, and data were transcribed verbatim. Four themes were derived by using the qualitative thematic analysis method.Results: The participants perceived that epidemiological investigations were burdensome but that the field work was important, and that expertise and collaboration were required. The participants started work without preparation due to the explosive increase in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, and they recognized work conflicts, unstable employment, and exhaustion as obstacles to their work performance. On the other hand, the participants took pride in contributing to the national epidemiological investigation and control and felt a sense of responsibility as nursing professionals. Finally, participants mentioned that the training of infectious disease practitioner was important for work improvement.Conclusion: Further research is needed on the development of standardized manuals for the training of nursing personnel as infectious disease specialists through the job analysis of epidemiological investigators.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of Metaverse-based core nursing skill contents (CNSC) developed for undergraduate nursing students.Methods: A nonequivalent control group was sampled with a non-synchronized design. Seventy-two participants (experimental group 34, control group 38) were recruited from May to June 2022 in Gwangju metropolitan city. The CNSC consisted of scenarios of vital sign measurements, and subcutaneous injections (including blood sugar tests). The data were analyzed using SPSS version 25 for Windows.Results: At the completion of the CNSC, statistically differences were found between groups in knowledge of core nursing skills (t=6.20, p<.001), confidence in core nursing skills performance (t=5.71, p<.001), and clinical competency (t=3.32, p=.001).Conclusion: These results indicate that the CNSC developed for undergraduate nursing students is effective in improving knowledge of core nursing skills, confidence in core nursing skills performance, and clinical competency for nursing students.

Effects of a multicultural education program based on international students’ participation on intercultural communication competence and nursing professionalism 基于国际学生参与的多元文化教育项目对跨文化沟通能力和护理专业精神的影响

Purpose: This study aimed to develop a multicultural education program that includes contact with persons from multiple cultures and to report on the program’s effects on intercultural communication competence and nursing professionalism.Methods: A multicultural education program that included contact with persons from multiple cultures was developed, and a quasi-experimental study was performed using a non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design. The experimental group comprised 32 participants, and the control group comprised 26 participants. An online survey was conducted before and immediately after the intervention to collect data.Results: The experimental and control groups’ mean scores for intercultural communication competence before the intervention were 3.67 and 3.84, respectively, while their mean scores for nursing professionalism were 3.87 and 3.69, respectively. After the intervention, both the intercultural communication competence score and the nursing professionalism score improved to 4.02 in the experimental group. The study demonstrated significant improvement in intercultural communication competence and nursing professionalism after the multicultural education program was conducted.Conclusion: The study’s results demonstrate the need to develop a multicultural education program including contact and communication with persons from multiple cultures, such as international students, women who immigrated for marriage, immigrant workers, and multicultural families.

Influence of nurse's image and satisfaction with the nursing major on their career identity: The mediating effect of professional self-concept 护士形象和护理专业满意度对职业认同的影响:职业自我概念的中介作用

Purpose: This study aimed to identify the mediating effect of professional self-concept on the relationship between nurse’s image and career identity, and between satisfaction with the nursing major and the career identity of nursing students.Methods: This study utilized a descriptive methodology, and 205 nursing students attending three universities in Busan Metropolitan City participated in it. Data were collected from self-reported questionnaires between March 26 and April 30, 2022. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, an independent t-test, analysis of variance, Pearson’s correlation coefficient, and simple and multiple regression using the IBM SPSS 22.0 program and Sobel test.Results: The mean score of career identity was 2.92±0.57 out of a possible 4. Career identity showed a significantly positive correlation with nurse's image (r=.32, p<.001), satisfaction with major (r=.47, p<.001), and professional self-concept (r=.32, p<.001). Additionally, professional self-concept had a partial mediating effect on the relationship between nurse's image (Z=2.44, p<.001), satisfaction with major (Z=2.35, p<.001), and career identity.Conclusion: The results of the study show professional self-concept had a mediating effect on the relationship between nurse's image, satisfaction with the nursing major, and career identity. Based on the study’s results, career identity education programs for nursing students need to include nursing image, satisfaction with major, and professional self-concept.

Factors affecting nursing students' patient safety competencies 影响护生患者安全能力的因素

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to identify nursing students' level of critical thinking disposition, communication skills, and self-leadership and to identify factors that affect the patient safety competency of nursing students.Methods: This study employs a descriptive research, method and was conducted from April 20 to May 19, 2022, with students from three nursing colleges in Korea. The collected data were analyzed by frequency and percentage, independent t-test, Pearson's correlation coefficients, and multiple regression. All analyzes were conducted using IBM SPSS 22.0.Results: The results of the multiple regression analysis showed that the regression model was significant (F=17.30, p<.001) and that communication skills (β=.22, p=.001), self-leadership (β=.31, p<.001), patient safety education experience (β=.15, p=.009), and subjects for credit (β=.15, p=.006) explained 28.0% of nursing students' patient safety competency.Conclusion: It is necessary to develop a self-leadership and communication skills improvement program and to organize rgular courses safety education subjects to improve the patient safety competency of nursing students.

Comparison of the effects of two oral cares on thirst and oral status following nasal surgery: Oral swab versus non-swab using cold water gauze 两种口腔护理对鼻腔手术后口渴和口腔状况的影响比较:使用冷水纱布的口腔拭子和非拭子

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the effects of oral swab and non-swab using cold water gauze on patients’ thirst and oral status following nasal surgery under general anesthesia.Methods: A non-equivalent control group was applied. Participants were divided into a control group (n=30) that was treated by cared for with cold water gauze application without oral swab and an experimental group (n=29) that was treated cared for with oral swab using cold water gauze after nasal surgery at the G University Hospital in Korea. Data were collected from May 14, 2020, to April 30, 2021, and analyzed using descriptive statistics, a chi-squared test, independent t-test, Wilcoxon signed-ranks test, and Mann-Whitney test.Results: The results showed no significant differences between the two groups in thirst (U=-0.04, p=.693) and overall oral condition (U=-0.34, p=.813) after the intervention. However, participants’ thirst and oral condition were significantly improved in each group after intervention.Conclusions: It was confirmed that both oral care methods reduced thirst and improved oral condition after nasal surgery. These findings indicate the need for intervention for patients’ thirst and oral condition after nasal surgery. Furthermore, they show that these oral care protocols can be used as a safe and effective nursing intervention for patients who undergo nasal surgery under general anesthesia.
