Color-Filter-Free wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) Multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) Red-Green-Blue (RGB)-light emitting diode (LED) visible light communication (VLC) system using mobile-phone camera is proposed and demonstrated. Neither color filter nor chromatic color information is required in the proposed receiver (Rx). All image signal processing is based on the grayscale image, which can greatly simplify the WDM MIMO RGB-LED VLC system and save the cost of color splitting process. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted. Optimized Scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) algorithm is used to achieve the design.

This paper proposes a novel Routing and Spectrum Assignment (RSA) method in Pbit/s optical switching node: Multipath and Optimal Spectrum Continuity based (MOSC) method for de-fragmentation. This method mitigates spectrum fragmentation occurs in Pbit/s optical switching node of flexible bandwidth optical networks due to dynamic allocation of spectrum resources for new connections. Simulation results show that the novel strategy achieves a better spectral efficiency and a smaller blocking probability with high adaptability to the traffic rate variation.

Burst-mode receiver (BMR) is one of the key components in passive optical networks (PONs). When directly-modulated distribution feedback (DFB) lasers are used as transmitter source, the BMR needs to take additional measures to compensate the effects of the laser frequency chirp. In this paper, we design a coherent optical BMR for a directly-modulated DFB laser source with On-Off Keying (OOK) modulation. We show that by increasing the bandwidth of the low-pass filter (LPF) before analog-to-digital converter (ADC), we can receive signal almost unaffected by frequency chirp and frequency offset. By using coherent detection, we can increase the receiver sensitivity thus enlarge the signal transmission distance.

We investigated the effect of pulse width on pulsed-pump fiber optical parametric amplifiers. To achieve a high parametric gain, there is a trade-off between stimulated Brillouin scattering threshold power and self phase modulation effect.

We study the performance of QPSK optical receiver with carrier phase estimation in the presence of N bit resolution ADCs. Two carrier phase estimation schemes, decision-aided maximum likelihood and M-th power, are considered. Bit error rate (BER) of the receiver with phase noise, amplitude noise and ADC quantization noise is theoretically analyzed. Monte-Carlo (MC) simulation results show that 5 bit ADC resolution is sufficient for both phase estimated schemes with less than 0.2 dB SNR penalty compared with the case of infinite ADC resolution. The results are also verified based on latest version of VPItransmissionMaker while less than 0.5 dB OSNR penalty is observed.

In order to mitigate the nonlinearity of resonant cavity light emitting diode (RCLED) in the step-index polymer optical fiber (SI-POF) communication, polynomial pre-distorter and look-up-table (LUT) pre-distorter are proposed in POF system to compensate the RCLED nonlinearity. Joint optimizations considering biasing current, electrical average signal power and modulation orders are carried out to make good trade-offs with system linearity. With the help of pre-distortion methodologies, 750Mbps compensated discrete multi-tone (DMT) transmissions over 50m SI-POF link are successfully implemented below the bit error rate (BER) of 10-3 and more than 10dB BER performance improvement are achieved. The results illustrate that the proposed pre-distortion schemes are benefiting from higher power efficiency and exhibiting great resistance to nonlinearity, even could be well demodulated in the strong nonlinearity region, which demonstrates the feasibility and validity for RCLED nonlinearity mitigation in POF communication system.

Employing the Zernike Polynomials method, the propagation characteristics of a Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam carrying orbital angular momentum (OAM) through the turbulent atmosphere are researched, we establish the random phase screens to emulate atmosphere turbulence according with the Kolmogorov spectrum model and simulate free-space propagation by virtue of the Fresnel diffraction. Intensity and phase distribution, OAM spectrum of LG beam affected by atmosphere turbulence are analyzed. The research results show that the atmosphere turbulence will lead to the spread of topological charge, the variation trend of OAM purity with distance and atmosphere turbulence intensity are obtained by calculations and simulations.
