SYNOPSIS The ‘Czech Story’ of Robinson Crusoe in the 19th Century, in the Context of Travel Literature of Its Time This study traces changes in 19th-century Czech retellings of Robinson Crusoe , from the Czech trans-lations of German adaptations by Joachim Heinrich Campe, Gustav Adolf Gräbner, and Karl Rudolf Oskar Höcker, to the original Czech retellings by Pavel Josef Šulc, František Doucha, Jan V. Novák, Antonín Mojžíš, and others. This tradition is analysed in connection to changes in contemporary travel literature, with special attention to certain mutual coincidences: for example, the fact that travel literature, from early on, was influenced by such literary topoi as the shipwreck, life on a de-serted island, encounter with the other, duels with pirates, etc. These topoi provided the frameworks and methods for writing travel literature; conversely, the stories of real journeys influenced the writing of novels. This mutual coincidence is not unique to Czech literary culture, as the author il-lustrates through the example of 18th-century adaptations of Robinson Crusoe in the British context. Specific to the 19th-century Czech tradition is a tendency to present the story as a ‘scientific type’ of travelogue, where the narrator serves as a kind of note-taking apparatus, providing expert explana-tory notes, and in which the fictional story is set in a specific context (geographical, historical, cul-tural, or botanical-zoological) in its contemporary world.

Postfaces in Karel Čapek’s Writings , or ‘Reflections Written in the Margin’ This study focuses on the postfaces that accompany Karel Čapek’s Writings (published 1980–1995), with an eye to the way they relate to the primary texts. The first part explores the nature of these essays, as well as the topics they address, in relation to Gérard Genette’s theory of paratexts. The author then goes on to examine certain presuppositions in the essays about the experience of reading Čapek’s writings, and how or whether authors of the essays are aware of their role in mediating this experience. In a third and final part of the study, the author examines the demands placed on litera-ture during the period 1948–1989, and how they are reflected in the postfaces.

SYNOPSIS Italian Activities in the Field of Czech-Italian Interwar Relations The reviews, editorials, and short summaries that appear in archived Czech periodicals provide an abundant source of documentation on the propagation of Italian culture, as well as the Italian recep-tion of Czech literature and culture, shedding light on a number of important figures and institu-tions that played a role in Czech-Italian cultural exchange. This study examines the mutual cultural relations that took place at the level of various institutions, including the organisation of numer-ous lectures and conferences, at which notable guests were invited to speak on (and promote) Italian culture and language. At its peak, this cultural exchange also included the founding of a library of Italian literary works and publication of various periodicals, as well as the participation of both Czech and Italian academics and intellectuals residing in Prague in the promotion of Italian culture.
