Nicole Loraux’s book The Mourning Voice: An Essay on Greek Tragedy focuses in its main part on the ways of expressing mourning in Greek tragedy, and understands mourning in tragedy as a borderline between (in)articulated words and music. This approach appears to be useful in interpreting some lyrical passages in which the contemporary reader may easily miss the semantic role of the acoustic dimension of the passage. However, my review essay discusses in detail how, apart from some interesting partial observations, the author fails in all the main ways, turning a partial interpretation into a general statement about the genre of tragedy as a whole. The author’s general thesis is modelled on the artificial oppositions of aulos — lyre, Apollo — Dionysos, which point to another artificial scheme, created by Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy , rather than to the poetic-performative culture of classical Greece. The author’s following of this scheme leads in the end to a misinterpretation of the specific passages from the tragedies on which she builds her interpretation.

Climate fiction (more commonly cli-fi) is a relatively new yet highly influential literary genre focusing on the reflection of anthropogenic climate change and the environmental crisis more generally. WHAT VLADIMÍR BORECKÝ DID NOT WISH TO KNOW: THE “MAŠÍBL” HUNTER IN FRONT OF “THE MAŠÍBL OF THE MAŠÍBLS” The text captures various misunderstandings that arose when the living author, František Novák from Lomnice nad Popelkou, became the subject of Vladimír Borecký’s professional interest in 2002. While Borecký was a respected scholar in the field of cultural studies, Novák’s linguistic and historical theories remained mere scientific nonsense, amusing from a certain point of view, but completely unacceptable. Borecký, however, did not want to ridicule Novák; on the contrary, he was able to read his texts as an expression of playfulness, and he placed their effect in the highest degree of the comic, which he described as “absurdity”, questioning all the certainties of our knowledge. But Novák became convinced that his groundbreaking scientific theories were as yet misunderstood.

STRANGER THAN STRANGE: SOME NOTES ON VLADIMÍR BORECKÝ’S THEORY OF THE “MIRROR OF THE OBSCURE” The article’s central theme is Vladimír Borecký’s “theory of the obscure,” which is viewed and interpreted from several points of view. Firstly, it is compared from the point of view of philosophical pragmatism, especially from the search for continuity overcoming the dualism of art and life. Secondly, the attention is focused on the dual character of mirroring in Borecký’s key concept. Subsequently, the network of standards, norms, and criteria that a rational critical debate about the meaning and value of the work of these extraordinary figures always presupposes is described. Finally, the author conceptualizes the nature of “strange works” in terms of one of the contemporary definitions of art, the American philosopher Alva Noë’s concept of artworks as “strange tools.”

The article deals with the phenomenon of “mašíbl” from the theory of interpretation point of view. After the presentation of the main features of mašíbl in the first part of the study, attention is paid, in the second part, to the specific hermeneutics which Vladimír Borecký outlines in his general methodological reflections on the theory of culture and symbolic imagination. This theory, as we aim to point out, may provide an instructive clue to consider theoretical issues concerning the understanding of mašíbl. We come to the conclusion that mašíbl is a distinctive type of text that cannot be subordinated to any established kind of hermeneutics, but it needs its proper theory of interpretation. A REPRESENTATIVE OF COLD WAR FICTION? ROMAN KIM’S THE NOTEBOOK FOUND IN SUNCH’ON Roman Kim (1899–1967) was a Soviet Korean writer, Orientalist and counterintelligence officer, well-known in the 1950s and 1960s Eastern Europe as the author of political and spy novels such as The Girl from Hiroshima (1954), The Cobra under the Pillow (1962), The School of Phantoms (1965). This paper analyzes his famous novel The Notebook Found in Sunch’on (1951), its authenticity and message, not from the point of view of its literariness, but in the context of the 1950s. In this book Roman Kim openly accused Americans and Japanese that by the Korean conflict they tried to realize the “first of their ABC plan” leading eventually to World War III.
