Based on the theory of Arthur Coleman Danto I try to outline possible similarities between the state of art after its end and the state of melancholy. The melancholic breaks the order, thus paradoxically drawing its boundaries. Aristotle’s Problems , Robert Burton’s Melancholia , and a study of Melancholia of theorist László F. Földényi help us to name characteristics of this state.

The following study deals with the evolution of the centre-periphery dynamics in Chicano/a cultural and literary space of the Mexican American borderland region. With a brief overview of the socio-historical and geopolitical context in the background the article offers insight into the gradual formation of the cultural/literary capital of the Mexican American and later Chicano/a community, and inquiries into its possible emergence out of the formerly peripheral position in relation to the literary centres of Spain, Mexico or United States.

Traditional storytelling has been an essential constituent of Indigenous cultures in North America, including contemporary literary production. The perception of storytelling in Indigenous theories might, however, in some aspects differ from its Western literary critical understanding. This paper outlines the conceptual frameworks which shape and are reflected in Indigenous storytelling and examines relationality as the core principle of Indigenous knowledge system. Relationality does not only represent a frequent theme in Indigenous works, but it is also manifested in their narrative structure, and simultaneously can be used for their interpretation. In addition, the paper focuses on the equal role of the storyteller and the listener in Indigenous views on storytelling, the neces-sity to internalize a story to derive meaning, the power and animacy of stories and the importance of this for Indigenous typologies of stories, and on the issue of cultural appropriation, which stems from the different approaches to stories and knowledge as such in Indigenous and non-Indigenous perceptions.

The paper examines the potential influence of Wilhelm Dilthey on the works and thought of the Peruvian writer and ethnologist José María Arguedas. In 1953 Arguedas opened his ethnological article “Mountains in the Process of Peruvian Culture” with a quote from Dilthey’s book of essays Experience and Poetry (1910). Despite the fact that the two authors are distant in space and time, their herme-neutic approach and, above all, their faith in art as the highest possible form of knowledge, brings their reflections together. Dilthey’s triad experience — expression — understanding, which forms the core of the chosen quote, expresses the essence of art and its value: beauty, honest judgment, an authentic descent into the depth of linguistic expression and cultural identity. The three concepts also summarize Arguedas’s lifelong efforts to use art to make the underestimated Quechua and mes-tizo cultures a legitimate part of modern Peru and art in general.

The article discusses the transformation of the relationship of Czech literature to the French writer Jules Romains, the chief representative of Unanimism, during the 20 th century. In the period before and just after WWI, the emerging generation of authors received him with almost boundless admiration. In the interwar period, he was ideologically aligned with Karel Čapek’s generation and was publicly presented in the Czech cultural environment as the leading representative of contemporary French writing. A turning point came in the autumn of 1938, when, as a proponent of the idea of pacifism, he defended the principles of the Munich Agreement. Romains, originally seen as a friend of the Czechs, became a symbol of the French betrayal. After 1948, Romains’s post-Munich positions were placed in the context of the premises of Unanimism, which, in the perspective of the Marx-ist approach to literature, appeared to be ideologically mistaken because it neglected the agency of class aspects in the dynamics of society. Romains thus fell into the periphery of interest and into near oblivion. Only one-third of his major novel cycle Men of Good Will remains tanslated into Czech.
