Secondary World in Fantasy Tradition after J. K. Rowling j·k·罗琳之后幻想传统中的第二世界

The aim is to evaluate Rowling’s world of fairy tales and its adherence to the criteria of a fantasy secondary world according to the frameworks proposed by T. Todorov (1973), R. Jackson (1981), and F. Mendlesohn (2008). The secondary world in the Harry Potter series, the wizarding world, is open to the real world and shares its geography, yet hidden from non-magical people. It is consistently described with its own culture, customs, traditions, and social norms. The central conflict is between Good and Evil for domination, with Evil aiming to extend its power to both the magic world and the real world. The fantasy world is relatable to readers due to its handling of universal themes and issues relevant to their lives, transferring characters into new life conditions. Research methods include content analysis, psychological research, and comparative analysis.

Antonyms, or Antagonism in Language (on the Example of Feelings of Love and Hate) 反义词,或语言中的对立(以爱恨情仇为例)

The aim of the article was to show the opposition of lexemes love and hate by carrying out a pragmatic-discursive analysis of them (with a particular emphasis on the Biblical Discourse). It was concluded that from the semantic point of view, love and hate are long-lasting feelings with a strong emotional charge in opposition to each other. The expressions containing such a component as hate in various word forms have an unambiguously negative connotation while using the words love in most cases makes the message positive. The antagonism of the language units mentioned above is particularly evident in the Biblical Discourse, which is conditioned by the didactic-moralistic nature of the text.

War Discourse in the Biographical Novels About Artists: Intermedial Aspect 艺术家传记小说中的战争话语:中介层面

War narrative in the biographical novels about painters has been analysed in their intermedial links with the paintings of said artists. The object of analysis is novels about the Spanish artist Francisco Goya written by Manfred Schneider, Carlos Rojas, and Jacek Dehnel; Ralf Dutli’s novel about Chaim Soutine; and a separate section dedicated to a selection of novels about Ukrainian artists: Ivan Holubkovskyi’s text about Oleksa Novakivskyi, Stanislav Stetsenko’s work about Mykola Hlushchenko, Kateryna Lebedieva’s book about Les Kozlovskyi, Volodymyr Yavorivskyi’s novel about Kateryna Bilokur. At the core of the study is the intermedial methodology based on theory by I. Rajewski, A. Hansen-Löve, S. Macenka, and A. Berger. Different aspects of war discourse in novels and its interaction with the creations of artists have been identified and highlighted, i.e., thematisation of war, description of painting creation, ekphrasis and references to works of art, use of art poetics in a literary text, aesthetics and psychology of creativity stipulated by war.

Ukrainian Poetic Sixties: Mykola Kholodnyi’s Creative Individuality 乌克兰诗歌六十年代:米科拉·科洛达尼的创作个性

The article is devoted to the little-studied Ukrainian poet of the sixties, dissident M. Kholodnyi, his creative style, analysis of motifs, images, and symbols of lyrical heritage, and the phenomenon of creative individuality. Socio-political reflection of Ukrainian tragedies, the role of the artist and his work singled out among the motifs of his poetry. There are images of famous Ukrainian writers who are carriers of the code of national memory and help to shape the national consciousness of future generations. A separate block constitutes his intimate lyric poetry reflecting the various facets of the spiritual and corporeal together with emotions ranging from romantic to deeply sensual. It is noted that among the writers of the 60s generation, his poetry is distinguished by the presence of sharp satire and tragedy in depicting paradoxical and absurd Soviet reality.

The Connotation in Medieval Appositional Groups 中世纪对位组的内涵

Connotation as a syntactic mechanism of announcing a specific component in a sentence occurs or not in appositional groups. Based on the test for the non-ellipticity (or ellipticity) of the utterance, it can be determined whether the opposition base or the apposition itself is connoted (the sentence is then incomplete) or not (after the ellipse of the component, the sentence is still complete). Old Polish appositional groups of the type James and John, sons of Zebedee; Bolesław, priest and heir; chapter „Ut noxius” were reviewed in this article. They have been recorded from all monuments of the Polish language and constitute a representative collection of constructions of this type at that time. As a result of the analysis, it was found that in some types of expressions, the base was connoted (Mary, rose lights) or apposition (You, Lord). There were also groups with an unconnoted base (Piotr mayor from Koźmin) and an unconnoted apposition (stone, margarita). On this basis, the typology of the analyzed groups was established, distinguishing groups with unconnoted base and apposition, with connoted base and apposition, with unconnoted base and connoted apposition, and with connoted base and unconnoted apposition.

Creation and Analysis of Corpus of Short Prose by Latvian Women Writers 拉脱维亚女作家短篇散文语料库的创作与分析

The article aims to present the creation of the text corpus of short prose by Latvian women writers and a pilot study on the distribution of body words in the corpus. The corpus development is a part of the research process, which aligns with the goals and perspectives of feminist literary history. First, the paper introduces the design of the corpus. Consisting of 259 texts, published between 1893 and 2002, it is the first literary corpus focusing on Latvian women writers and on short prose. Given that short forms have long dominated women’s prose, this focus was a conscious decision to highlight women’s contribution to writing. Further, the article presents the methods of distant reading that were applied to identify the distribution of body words in the texts. The desire to reintroduce women into the history of literature has also led to a focus on the body. While writing is mediated through the body, it is also a space to explore and take possession of the body. Finally, by combining the results of distant reading with examples of close reading, the distribution of body words in different periods is compared.

A Contemporary Free Verse from American and Ukrainian Readers’ Perspectives 从美国和乌克兰读者的视角看当代自由诗

The study presents an experiment aimed at discovering similarities and differences in how American and Ukrainian participants perceived contemporary free verse. Three poems were examined from the perspectives of intertextual/infratextual/intratextual context dimensions. The presence of intertextual characteristics – reflecting social reality and metaphoric content – was recognized by the majority in both groups of participants, yet across the groups, there were differences in the degree of value placed on each characteristic. Differences in views on the infratextual contexts reflect the variability of functions performed by the initial/intermediate/closing parts of the poems. As regards intratextual context dimension, there were significant similarities in the participants’ views on the imagery, in the constructed text-worlds, emotional responses, interpretations, and encountered difficulties. The analysis of the intratextual contexts of the poems indicates that some texts may drive readers’ interpretations, thus reducing the role of culture in their reception.

Emily Dickinson in the Work of Polish Translators. Continuation of Research 艾米丽·迪金森在波兰翻译家的工作。继续研究

This article deals with the Polish translation of Emily Dickinson’s poetry and correspondence. It is a continuation of the reflection in The Emily Dickinson Journal’s pages, which started in 2022. This time we present translations of Kazimiera Iłłakowiczówna, Andrzej Szuba, Krystyna Lenkowska, Ryszard Mierzejewski, Tadeusz Sławek, Teresa Pelka, Artur Międzyrzecki, Lilla Latus, Agnieszka Osiecka, Agnieszka Kreczmar and Ewa Kuryluk. We discuss a selection of Dickinson’s letters translated by Danuta Piestrzyńska. We emphasize the characteristic features of each of the discussed translations. Although Iłłakowiczówna discovered Dickinson for Polish readers, her translations are perceived as archaic. Szuba mainly translates aphoristic texts. Lenkowska makes an effort to be faithful to the original. The newest translators introduce Poles to unknown poems and make new translations of the texts previously rendered into Polish.

For a long time, the idea of the so-called “Russian world”, a civilization united according to linguistic, ethnocultural, and religious principles, has been the subject of numerous interdisciplinary studies. It is primarily due to the aggravation of the geopolitical situation in the sphere of Russian influence, such as Ukraine. Existing studies are devoted to historical, cultural, and philosophical aspects. However, there are still not enough linguistic ones since there is still no single definition of the essence of this phenomenon and the features of its functioning in various discourses. Today, in the scientific space, there are three main theoretical approaches to understanding the “Russian world” – civilizational, geopolitical, and religious. In this study, the task is to conceptualize the presented “Russian world” notion as well as to identify newly developed connotations in connection with the Russian-Ukrainian military conflict of 2022, utilizing semantic analysis, component, and contextual analysis methods. The media texts of the Russian-language Ukrainian media were used as the material of the study, reflecting the military conflict between Russia and Ukraine and mentioning the “Russian world” concept. The study showed that the “Russian world” concept had acquired numerous negative connotations, such as “war, destruction, death”.

What Conceptual Metaphors Appear in Texts on Psychedelics and Medicine? Corpus-Based Cognitive Study 迷幻药和医学文本中出现了哪些概念隐喻?基于语料库的认知研究

This paper aims to present conceptual metaphors employed to discuss psychedelics in texts published online by organizations popularizing knowledge about psychedelic substances. The foundation of this investigation comprises Cognitive Grammar, Conceptual Metaphor Theory, and Corpus Linguistics. A corpus of 160 texts on medical research, mental health, and therapy published in 2020 is built to enable quantitative and qualitative analysis. The investigation reveals the existence of the conceptual metaphors: psychedelic experience is a trip (a single experience that requires return and may involve adventurous, sacred, challenging aspects), psychedelic experience is a journey (a set of experiences (trips), integration process, and development, may involve healing), psychedelic substance is a tool / bridge / vehicle / agent providing access. The study of collocates of the word “psychedelic” also suggests the conceptualization of the psychedelic substances and/or experience as medicine in the analyzed corpus.
