The article focuses on the increasing importance of research activities of libraries as a management tool and substantiates the necessity of the development of library specialists’ professional research competencies. The activities of modern libraries depend to a large extent on the external conditions and available resources. Librarians have to monitor the requirements of their founders and consumers, the priorities of cultural policy, staff resources, innovative potential and other factors. Library specialists therefore face new challenges. Today their activities acquire not only cultural meaning but also marketing, management and strategic dimensions. Researches and analytics enable to take into consideration changes and to adjust managerial decisions, to reveal opportunities and risks. Library research workers study reading preferences among the different social groups, their level of informational culture as well as their satisfaction with library services, the role of libraries in the structure of communication channels, the quality of library activities. In this connection, Khabarovsk State Institute of Culture has introduced in the curricular of students majoring in “Management of Library and Information Activities” disciplines “Sociological research in library and information science” and “Marketing research in library and information science”. Training has practice-oriented character, it means that every student performs his own research as a course project. The final qualification work is aimed at working out a development strategy for a particular library (a research base) taking into account specific situation. It is based on gathering data (sociological survey), and their interpretation using the research methods according to the adopted program. The program contains the description of the purpose, object, hypothesis, concept, survey frame, research methods, stages of the research. The results obtained and recommendations should be described in the report. During the implementation of the study students acquire the necessary research skills and professional competences in the sphere of library and information activities.

At present, all the spheres of life of the world society are under the influence of constant, continuous and intensive changes such as digitalization, automation of various types of human activities, as well as changing of value orientations, which requires a revision of the basic competencies of modern specialists able to work effectively in the conditions of the global market. In education there is a gap between the expectations of employers and the real competencies of graduates, between the dissatisfaction of graduates with the knowledge and skills acquired at the factory and the willingness of universities to respond to employers and students’ requests for the formation of competencies necessary for graduates. This article considers the issues connected with formation of a model of internationalization of educational environment of the Russian universities at the graduate level as well as the processes of the transformation of educational model. The characteristics of a modern global graduate who is able to live and work in the multicultural and multilingual society are considered in the article. An analysis of the national experience of graduate training in Russian research universities showed that now there is a lack of systematic and conscious use of the mechanisms of internationalization; as well as a deficit of scientific and pedagogical staff who are able to use and teach the students global competencies.

The article addresses the issues of intergenerational interaction of subjects of educational space in conditions of the modern changing world. The authors propose and substantiate a conventional approach to determine the nature of interaction between a Teacher and a Student. An empirical basis for developing this approach was an analysis of the theories of generations and the age structure of the pedagogical community of the Russian Federation. The study presents statistical data on the characteristics of the age structure of the pedagogical community at the federal, regional and institutional levels. The specifics of the perception by the teachers and students of the role of modern student youth in the life of the university, the difference in value orientations in the changing world of education are indicated. The authors emphasize the significance of the problem posed by the interaction of generations in the educational organization. The fundamental principle of interaction between the Student and the Teacher within the framework of the conventional approach viewed as a new methodological approach is the principle of the convention of generations. This approach is presented in comparison with the existing modern approaches to the organization of interaction between the subjects of educational space (event, subject-subject, environmental) as a new conceptual framework that defines the goals, principles, methods and results of the interaction between all subjects of the educational space. These subjects are considered as representatives of different but equal generations in the context of the space of continuous education of each of them, the result of which is cooperative educational effect achievement. The article dwells on the characteristics of the “convention of generations” as a multi-vector interaction of generations that overcomes the shortcomings of one-way interaction of generations as a transfer of experience and knowledge from older to younger. The one-way interaction strategy forms the so-called “presumption of incompetence” of the younger generation that generates excessive custody that goes to the authoritarianism and does not promote the development of such qualities in the younger generation as independence, responsibility, initiative, creativity.

The article presents the results of a research conducted among students of MAI (NRU) and MADI in order to find out the difficulties they face in the process of learning a foreign language in the framework of the compulsory course. The research was conducted by questionnaire. The students of the 1-3 courses of MAI and MADI, studying engineering and English language were interviewed. It was revealed that future engineers are aware of the demand for English in their professional activities, and the main objectives of studying of the language at the University are verbal professional and personal communication (communication with foreign colleagues, as well as with friends and acquaintances). At the same time, educational motivation (mastering of educational literature, obtaining a credit) turned out to be less significant. Students consider the discussion to be the most effective method of educational activity. More than a quarter of the students admit that they lack knowledge gained at school to master the English language course successfully, as a result they lack a vocabulary and have difficulties with grammar, pronunciation and translation. Lack of time and motivation prevents them from overcoming these problems. To improve the motivation of studying English, the researchers propose to use a variety of methods, in particular, role-playing, work in pairs, discharge, etc. Mastering English language is also hindered by organizational problems – the lack of speaking practice in the classroom, a small number of classes per week, large group size, high speed of passing through language material and a significant amount of homework. The research revealed students’ wishes regarding the optimization of the English language course at the University. Future engineers would like more attention to be paid to speaking practice, communication with native speakers, watching videos as part of the English compulsory course.

One of the most important and, according to psychological and pedagogical literature, the least investigated aspects of the domestic system of higher education is the sphere of personal interrelations at the level “teacher – student”. The formation of this type of social relations is a complicated process equally depending on both interested sides, but it is this process that eventually determines the efficiency of the educational process. At present anonymous questioning of both students and teachers is by far the only method of high quality psychodiagnostics of this sphere of educational space. The received findings not only give a more comprehensive idea of the personal characteristics of modern students and the teaching staff of higher schools but can also provide some essential corrective amendments to the organization of the educational process. Anonymous questioning of 400 students of the medical and pediatric faculties of Kursk State Medical University (KSMU) has revealed a number of both quite predictable and fairly unexpected facts concerning the psychological atmosphere at the level “teacher – student”. The received findings to some extent alter the firmly established idea of an elevated ambitiousness of the modern generation of students. Corroborative to it is the objective fact of a lowered personal self-esteem in 38% questioned students of KSMU. The fact of the negative judgment of professional and personal qualities of some teachers (16% of respondents) is alarming and needing thorough consideration and practical conclusions. The comparatively low demand of the recommended to students main academic teaching manuals of the studied disciplines (56%) and the actually unclaimed lectures delivered to them (8%) can be to a great extent explained by their competitive disability in comparison with the short in form but superficial in the contents various kinds of “homebrew” guidance-manuals permanently ranking first in the teachers’ annual rating reports.
