For over sixty years, the Valparaiso School has represented a singular episode in the international architectural scenario, and constitutes one of the most significant and astonishingly creative cultural phenomena in Latin America today, acknowledged for its original ideas and a capacity to conceive its own language. In this article, an attempt will be made to describe the peculiarities of its teaching by relating three essential moments of its didactic approach: observation , act and form .

OF MUZIO AND BOOK IV OF SERLIO. THE INVENTION OF LANGUAGE Abstract This essay attempts, in a fresh way, to trace the treatises behind Muzio’s figuration, highlighting the role of Sebastiano Serlio’s work as a departure point for an operational recomposition of architectural language. Serlio’s grammar and syntax in Book IV of his "Treatise on Architecture" is analysed as a source of the solutions adopted for Ca’ Brütta, defining the authenticity and depth of its genealogy together with a long-term view of its legacy. This essay attempts, in a fresh way, to trace the treatises behind Muzio’s figuration, highlighting the role of Sebastiano Serlio’s work as a departure point for an operational recomposition of architectural language. Opposed then exalted, idealized at the same time as being forgotten, Ca’ Brütta, Giovanni Muzio’s first work in Milan, has seen its ups and down, without however ever being properly appraised, but it has been a touchstone in the worn-out vacuous dialect between modernity and tradition. This short essay will attempt to trace the figurative materials its architectural discourse developed from, trying to specify the origin of “our own classicalstyle elements from the 1500s to the 1800s” which Muzio himself identified in 1922 as actors

Is it possible to apply strategies of formal decomposition to the figurative patrimony left in heritage by the generation of Canella, Rossi, Aymonino, Semerani and companions? Or better, isn’t it the only way accessible, after acknowledging that the historical and dialectical conditions in which those architectures and their authors took place can’t be repeated? And even, are we sure that certain figures, taken away from their natural environment and reput in circulation, still don’t preserve something of their original meaning? And how much? Therefore, it’s only by the “historical” betrayal of their world that today it’s possible to release the formal and semantic values, that instead, for their nature, benefit of several lives. Maybe, for does who loved certain forms, it’s the only work to do.

The parallel reflection on architecture for education and education for architecture, bringing together two possible variations of their link, shows the radical affinity between the two activities, which can be summarized in the concept of bildung: a self-training process. Bildung is fundamental in Gadamer hermeneutic thinking and is central in the «semantic constellation» in which, according Renato Rizzi, to build and to educate, bildung and building, arche e techne are linked. Education and architecture are exercising of critical thinking and share the individual and collective dimension of the social act, recalled by John Hejduk: instructing in the capacity to build one's own knowledge by locating it inside a critical vision, building architecture as an experience and interpretation of the world. School architecture can be an Architecture School, given that it forces us to recall that every authentic experience of architecture is enlivened by the cognitive tension of learning.

The Smart City word borns as an answer to some important problems that the XXI century city is asked to answer: population growing, urbanisation, climatic changes. The development of the XX century city was carried on in a deregulated way, without considering that the “Earth good” was limited and its ecosystem breakable. It is into this crisis climate that the concept of intelligent city borns and develops. The paper aims to study this issue from the origins of the word and from the historic evolution that made the concept real.
