Supported by young people, radical rightwing parties have boomed in Costa Rica. Through surveys, we characterize youths in ideological terms, and analyze their voting behavior in 2018. Opposing both state intervention in the economy and samesex marriage, having received less schooling and professing Evangelicalism increase the probability of voting for the radical right among young people. Unlike other countries, it is young women rather than young men that vote for the radical right.

We describe relationships and resources involved in the social organization of childcare in a rural community, based on qualitative data obtained within the framework of an ethnographic research. Social support for caretaking comes mainly from parental ties, intergenerational and intragender cooperation and complementarity, and to a lesser extent, from domestic and institutional ties, the choice of which combines personal attributes, location, accessibility and trust. Evidence is provided on strategies and forms of social organization of sectors of the population that have been scarcely studied to serve as a basis for public policies to address diverse lifestyles.

The article uses ethnographic research on rightwing anti-government movements in Bolivia conducted at the height of social conflict and cultural violence in 2008 and 2009 to reflect on the relationship between anthropological research, ethical commitment, and the politics of knowledge. The article first describes the epistemological and political contexts in which engaged anthropology emerged. It then considers how and why the author’s research diverged from the expectations of engaged anthropology. After reflecting on the implications of this shift, it concludes by arguing for a methodological recalibration that will allow anthropologists to take the ideologies and cultural logics of contemporary rightwing mobilization seriously.

In Latin America, gender equality policies are being challenged by campaigns against sexual and non-reproductive rights, comprehensive sexuality education, and gender as an analytical approach. This article analyses the advances and pitfalls of gender equality policies during the Latin American pink tide and the most recent rise of the political right wing. We argue that, while earlier opposition focused their efforts on a narrow set of policy issues linked to sexuality and reproduction, a novel and distinctive feature of contemporary gender backlash is the expansion of that organized opposition into new previously uncontested policy domains.
