Determinant Factor for Quality Green Open Space Assessment in Malaysia 马来西亚绿色开放空间质量评价的决定因素

Green open spaces (GOS) are an integral part of the green network in any urban areas which serve the benefits of cities and people’s well-being in a various form including physical, emotional and social health. Embrace the fact that the green open space is one of the key indicators to sustainable city planning; yet, many countries including Malaysia are facing underutilised parks issues due to various factors including the quality aspect of the parks. Before this, evidence suggests that sustainability and quality of city’s dwellers are measured by the quality and quantity aspects of parks and open spaces. Hence, this paper sought to explore further on the determinant factors of quality green open space (QGOS) assessment in Malaysia as part of an effort to overcome this shortcoming. This study adopts quantitative method through questionnaire survey to identify the most relevant factors which influence the quality of green open spaces in Malaysia. 1500 questionnaire survey was distributed within fifteen (15) Neighborhood Parks. The results generated from Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) had revealed eight most relevant factors of social sustainability, use pattern, place attachment, facilities, safety and security, nature preferences, activities and accessibility to achieve the quality of open spaces in Malaysia. Hence, it is hoped that the findings from this review would contribute to the improvement of Malaysian neighbourhood parks and plan as part of the support for the 11th Malaysian Plan (2016-2020).

A Comparative Study of Passive Design Features/Elements in Malaysia and Passive House Criteria in the Tropics 马来西亚被动式设计特点/要素与热带地区被动式房屋标准的比较研究

In the Tropical climate, buildings gain solar heat and penetration through the building envelope and glazing which can cause overheating and thermal discomfort of occupants. Therefore, a conventional solution is by using electro-mechanical cooling system in buildings which raises energy demands dramatically, leading to ecological loading. In order to mitigate the cooling load energy consumption, natural ventilation and heat avoidance techniques have been researched and applied in Malaysia. Passive building design is a method to protect dwellers from the influence of external thermal discomfort. Likewise, this is in line with the characteristics of Malaysian vernacular architecture. Yet, previous studies on passive building design strategies have not been compared to the Passive House principles. Therefore, this paper reviews, accumulates and compares studies on passive design features/elements in Malaysia and Passive House criteria in the Tropics. Through this study, it is verified that the Passive House principles are applicable in the Tropical climate and similarities and/or differences in terms of achieving thermal comfort and energy reduction between a Passive House and other buildings with passive design features and strategies were identified.

An Overview of Influencing Factors of Thermal Performance for Open Spaces in the Tropics 热带开放空间热性能影响因素综述

In recent years, urban heat island has become a critical issue especially in the tropics, thereby drawing attention of researchers. Urban heat island poses considerable influence upon the thermal performance of an open space in terms of its social interaction, environmental and therapeutic potentials. To provide benefits towards healthy urban living, proper planning of open spaces is seen to be crucial. In the tropics, the thermal performance of an open space can only be effectively achieved when determinant variables on site and the surroundings are not neglected. This paper provides a comprehensive review of previous studies on the effect of different determinant variables for open spaces with regards to thermal performance in the tropics. Determinant variables such as built forms and configurations, orientation, built envelope and layout, building fabric and surface materials, and natural features like vegetation and water features were reviewed and analysed to identify their influences toward the thermal comfort of open spaces and how the effective passive cooling potential could be enhanced. In conclusion, to achieve the best possible thermal performance for open spaces, determinant variables of greater influence such as built form and configuration, orientation and the built envelope and layout are stressed throughout the design planning.

The environmental factors affecting service satisfaction of community hospital 影响社区医院服务满意度的环境因素

Community Hospital in Thailand is a small-size hospital and available at a ‘local level. Established by the Thai government some thirty years ago, the hospitals now find their facilities are unable to cope with increasing numbers of patients due to population growth. The re-furbishment of the old buildings in the hospital was needed in order to respond to these changes. Past extensions to the hospitals have focused more on form and function of the built environment rather than “needs” of the users (patients/family). However, research has shown that there are multiple aspects that affect a positive user experience in a hospital. This is especially true for the environmental aspect, which helps patients feel more comfortable and relaxed both mentally and physically when using community hospital services. There is a need therefore, to establish which of the environmental factors are important to a positive user experience. In this study, factors related to the built environment and their effect on the user experience were broadly categorized as Ambient Features, Architectural Features, Interior Design Features and Outdoor Environment Features. Each of these consisted of further sub-categories of importance to the user. Twenty users of Sara Phi Community Hospital were interviewed to determine what was important to them as users of the hospital. This hospital was chosen for convenience. The AHP model was used to establish a rank order of those factors considered important in determining user satisfaction. In-depth interview and questionnaires provided data for final analysis. The study found that Ambient Features had the highest impact score (0.343) followed by Architectural Features (0.260), Interior Design Features (0.224) and Outdoor Environment Features (0.173). The secondary factors that make up the main factors were ranked according to their weighted contribution to overall satisfaction. The paper discusses these factors with support for the respective rank. Suggestions are made for future development of this strategy of investigation

Some activities in all types of buildings contribute to greenhouse gas, GHG, emissions. This is especially so in case of residential buildings in cities as it has been observed that urban residents spend the greater part of their time indoors. During this time man is engaged in emission producing activities such as respiration, energy generation and consumption and waste generation. The behaviour of the users of buildings greatly influences the quantities of the GHGs resulting from their activities. There are certain ways of doing things especially in connection with energy use in buildings that have been identified to be more efficient and consequently less emission intensive than others. This study investigated the extent of observance of these energy efficient practices by the surveyed households and their willingness to adopt measures that will significantly reduce their carbon footprint. The findings show a generally low level of observance of the measures by the households but they also show a high level of readiness to adopt the suggested measures. The study concludes that emission of large quantities of carbon dioxide by the surveyed houses can be avoided and recommends a creation of awareness among households about these practices by the relevant stakeholders.

The Appraisal Model of Teenagers’ Landscape Preference based on Demographic and Personality Characteristics 基于人口统计学和人格特征的青少年景观偏好评价模型

Landscape design has attracted researchers’ attention due to a significant attachment between landscape and society. It is therefore necessary that landscape is designed based on people’s preferences. Thus, it is imperative that people’s landscape preference and the relevant influential factors to be identified. This research aims to introduce a model to provide the best prediction for landscape preference based on demographic and personality characteristics among 384 teenagers in Isfahan, Iran. Accordingly, the research follows three objectives to predict teenagers’ preference for mountain, forest, and agricultural landscapes. Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire was conducted to examine respondents’ personality characteristics. Participants’ landscape preferences were measured by using a visual preference survey. In this survey respondents rated pictures of three kinds of landscape including mountain, forest, and agricultural landscapes. The results revealed that in prediction of teenagers’ landscape preference, the factors of creativity, field of study, and gender are influential. The findings raise implications for the concerned architects and environmental designers as well as planners and decision makers in both ecological and psychological settings.

It is therefore necessary that landscape is designed based on people’s preferences. Thus, it is imperative that people’s landscape preference and the relevant influential factors to be identified. This research aims to introduce a model to provide the best prediction for landscape preference based on demographic and personality characteristics among 384 teenagers in Isfahan, Iran. Accordingly, the research follows three objectives to predict teenagers’ preference for mountain, forest, and agricultural landscapes. Cattell Sixteen Personality Factor Questionnaire was conducted to examine respondents’ personality characteristics. Participants’ landscape preferences were measured by using a visual preference survey. In this survey respondents rated pictures of three kinds of landscape including mountain, forest, and agricultural landscapes. The results revealed that in prediction of teenagers’ landscape preference, the factors of creativity, field of study, and gender are influential. Contribution of Building Façades to Attractive Streetscapes: Study of Two Main Streets in Kuala Lumpur City 建筑立面对迷人街景的贡献:吉隆坡市两条主要街道的研究

Building facades contribute to attractive urban streetscapes. In between, physical elements and visual qualities of building façades play the most important role. This study seeks to identify the impact of building facades on creating attractive streetscapes in the city of Kuala Lumpur. In achieving this, a self-administered questionnaire survey was conducted to gather peoples' evaluation of building facades in Kuala Lumpur where combination of modern and traditional architecture creates worth-study urban landscapes. The researcher randomly surveyed 330 respondents, 18 to 50 years old, from the passers-by who just visit the area and those who reside and work there, using the time interval sampling method. The results demonstrate that consistency of colors and details of building facades, simplicity, unity, conformity of store lots in a single building block, large windows, transparency of the function of buildings, and display items of store-fronts determine visual richness of streetscapes in the study areas. The findings contribute to visual identity of cities through creating attractive streetscapes.

Green Maintenance Approach: Low Carbon Repair Appraisal on St Paul’s Church, Melaka, Malaysia 绿色维修方法:对马来西亚马六甲圣保罗教堂的低碳维修评估

Sustainability commonly denotes an integration of economic, societal, and environmental domains giving rise to the concept of livable built environment. Progressively, environmental consideration in low carbon repair appraisal for heritage buildings has become increasingly critical and this paper supports this expanding area. This paper gives insight on how ‘Green Maintenance’ concept and methodology was adopted to appraise low carbon repair works for laterite stones of St Paul’s Church, located at the Historical City of Melaka, Malaysia. Subsequently, this paper also highlights the common techniques and materials for laterite stones repair. This has been achieved through quantification of embodied carbon expenditure expended in laterite stones repair within ‘cradle-to-site’ boundary of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), using formulaic expression and calculation procedure of ‘Green Maintenance’ model. The calculation procedures of the model were adopted to enable the evaluation of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, in terms of embodied carbon expenditure, expended from laterite stones repair for selected case study. The results revealed that stone replacement is considered as the most sustainable repair technique, mainly due to its high longevity of repair and low embodied carbon expenditure, in terms of generated Environmental Maintenance Impact (EMI) of ‘Green Maintenance’ modelling. However, it may lead to a further discussion in term of philosophical context. As guidance, the EMI model relays the true value of CO2 emissions, contextualised within the longevity of repair and minimal intervention that allows low carbon repair appraisal within livable built environment domain.

Project Life Cycle Risk of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Projects for Construction Sustainability 面向建筑可持续性的公私合作(PPP)项目生命周期风险

One of the principles of PPP projects is value for money in maintaining the constructionsustainability of a project. Thus, driven by this necessity, for the purpose to seek a solution in minimizing both the total management costs to the public and private sectors firms, the risks identified in PPP projects must be allocated to the party who is able to manage it effectively. Evidence from projects worldwide shows that risks are not managed properly, and little attention has been committed in the Malaysian research community to systematically identify and manage the risk in Malaysian PPP projects. This paper reviewing the concept of Public-Private Partnership (PPP) in Malaysian construction industry by identifying the critical risks factors in PPP projects and explores the actions taken by the private party in managing these risks. A mixed methodology of quantitative and qualitative approaches was used to identify the allocation, probability and impact of the risk factors and determine what risk response measures are used to deal with the critical risks. The outcome from this study revealed that there are 23 risk factors allocated to private parties determined as critical risk factors. This study also proposed 79 risk responses taken by private parties to manage the critical risks. Private parties have to adopt the relevant skills and knowledge in risk management to ensure the projects were successfully gives a value to the public without compromising their profit and improving the sustainability of the construction project.

Building Maintenance Practices towards the Common Defects and Resident’s Satisfaction of Elderly Homes 安老院舍常见缺陷及住户满意度之楼宇维修实务

The growing population of elderly globally gives rise to the importance to provide better home for elderly. The homes for elderly need special features to support the decrease in physical to mental capabilities of elderly and enable them to lead an active and well-being lifestyle. Maintenance of this special feature and basic elements in the building play an importance role to ensure the homes are safe to live and will not endanger the users. This research aims to investigate the relationship of maintenance practices (staff behaviours) towards the common defects and resident’s satisfaction of elderly homes. Questionnaire survey forms were distributed to the elderly to determine the types of defects and rank the behaviour of maintenance personnel. In addition, semi-structured interview was conducted with the maintenance personnel to validate the current maintenance practice in elderly homes. The findings proven that the behaviours of maintenance personnel were critical to convince the residents in executing the maintenance tasks and to reduce the occurrence of defect. In addition, the findings also proven the maintenance practice for active aging home is differ from usual building maintenance practices. The failure to differentiate the nature of operation could indirectly affect the maintenance performance of the buildings.
