: Moral aspects of the crisis of Roman Empire from the perspective of latin breviators . Throughout its existence, the Roman Empire experienced difficult periods. One such period took place between 235-284, when there were numerous usurpations, barbarian invasions, secessionist movements, civil wars, etc. In historiographical sources, this period is known as the crisis of the Roman Empire in the mid-III rd century. Within the following pages we have set out to analyze information from the works of Latin historians of the IV th century - Aurelius Victor, Eutropius, Festus and Pseudo-Aurelius Victor. Specifically, we have looked at the moral aspects of the crisis of the Roman Empire found in the works written by these four historians. Cuvinte-cheie : Imperiul Roman, Antichitatea târzie, criza secolului al III-lea, breviaria , aspecte morale. Rezumat secolului

» 1 Abstract : Marcus Aurelius: Thinking Liberty in the Wake of Pa-gan Philosophy at the Dawn of Christianity . The concept of liberty emerged in the Greek world in contrast to that of slavery and referred to a social reality, to wit, that of rights warranted by the people’ belonging to a race. This type of liberty, which is tantamount to indigenousness, evolved afterwards into a political concept that underlies democracy. The philosophical traditions of cynicism and stoicism have turned the collective liberty of the demos into individual liberty and tried to define its character and its limits. Representing the third stoicism, Marcus Aurelius employs the word liberty with various meanings that sum up and tint the previous meanings. The present paper reaches across the plethora of meanings of this word by analysing the occurrences of ἐ λευθερ ί α in Ad se ipsum and trying to tease apart the inherited meanings and those that the emperor-philosopher contributes as a personal and innovative touch .

: Augustus and the Figure of the Statesman in the Historiae Philippicae of Pompeius Trogus . The paper deals with the figure of the ideal ruler as he appears in Pompeius Trogus. Despite Justins’ cuts, the text allows us to reconstruct the characteristics of this ideal statesman: being a monarch, being endowed with moderation, refraining from an aggressive foreign policy, giving a lot of value to the mos maiorum , and always setting a good example. In this sense, Alexander is the negative example while Augustus is the positive one .

: Basil’s Letters of Recommendation between Tradition and Innovation . Late antique letter collections are mostly interesting in order to discover less known aspects of the daily life. This essay deals with Basil of Cae-sarea’s correspondence and his recommendation letters, which are very useful to track back his social and cultural networks, mainly with imperial high-rank offi-cers (Modestus, Helladius, Aburgios). Recommendation letters ask for tax exemp-tions to monks and priests, require intervention to help widows, orphans, poors, save friends in peril.

: Risks of navigation and sanctuaries in the nautical sources between Antiquity and the Middle Ages . Man’s attitudes and reac-tions in the face of the danger of the sea constitute one of the most significant mo-ments in his relationship with the holy matter. The analysis intends to focus atten-tion on places of worship and sacred spaces linked to the sea and maritime itine-raries which have been recognized as having a surplus of sacredness, namely the ‛ sanctuaries’. The survey is based on different types of sources, especially those closely related to the nautical environment. In fact, it is possible to investigate how the maritime space and its landings have assumed a particular religious si-gnificance and how this is perceived and described in multiple sources of pagan and Christian environments with intertwining, persistence, and innovations .
