For Whom the Bell Tolls
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2021-06-10 DOI: 10.37718/csa.1996.09
Björn Magnusson Staaf
Time perception has important consequences for how human activity is structured. The question of how time perception has shifted in history could therefore be of certain importance in archaeological interpretation. This article is an attempt to analyze the construction of time in early- and high-medieval lreland and Scandinavia. The bell and the sound of the bell related to a theological concept in Christian ideology which referred to time. The bell was to become an utensil of power in the process of christianization. With help of the bell, the church partly abolished the subjectivity in the perception of time. When the bell rang it thereby dictated a common sense of time. We could therefore perhaps assume that a conceptual polemic concerning time has been one of the reasons for conflicts in medieval Ireland and Scandinavia.

The Triviality of the New Innovation and Impact in Archaeology and Beyond
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2021-06-10 DOI: 10.37718/CSA.2018.09
T. Sørensen
What drives archaeology? Is it new empirical discoveries, new methods or new theory? These factors combined are the fuel of the discipline, is the obvious answer. However, debates and research articles frequently reveal how a perceived need for novelty, originality and impact tends to disentangle this triumvirate of archaeological virtues, giving precedence to one asset over others as the supposed driving force. Focusing on archaeological theory, this article taps into current discussions of the nature of archaeological change, reviewing debates on the formation of archaeological theory, its legitimisation and usefulness. Specifically, I address a recent claim that archaeological theory too readily undermines itself by adopting immature ideas and concepts from other disciplines in an uncritical pursuit of novelty. Finally, I discuss how archaeology may contribute more generally to the formation of theory in the humanities by returning so-called borrowed theory.

Burning Down the House: Mythological Chaos and World Order on Gotlandic Picture Stones
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2021-06-10 DOI: 10.37718/CSA.2005.06

The Gotlandic picture stone monuments of the oldest type constitute a material manifestation of a "concept" which basically deals with world order and balance, from the single picture to the monument as a whole. This concept is detectable in myths, sagas and material culture alike. Only by paying more attention to the female agents of the sagas is it possible to reach an understanding ofthe common content of ideas between the different expressions. That the elements play an important role in the sagas is reflected in the setting and execution of monuments and artefacts.

White Light —White Heat: The use of Fire as a Light and Heat Source in an Atrium House in Roman Pompeii
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2021-06-10 DOI: 10.37718/CSA.2005.04
H. Boman
This article concerns the distribution of fire as light and heat source within the insula investigated by the ongoing Swedish Pompeii Project. Here the author suggests that fire installations as kitchens, ovens and baths were clustered in specific areas within this insula, and the installations were not efficiently used to heat the dwelling areas of the house. It is also proposed that the surfaces of the interior walls and floors of the Roman atrium house were polished in purpose to reflect and distribute light and, which is emphasised in the article, to soften the transition between brightly lit areas and areas in dark shadow. This contrast had to be eliminated for the human eye to adopt to the light conditions in the room and by that, to make the light as efficient as possible.

Looking into the Recent Past: Extending and Exploring the Field of Archaeology
Q1 Arts and Humanities Pub Date : 2021-06-10 DOI: 10.37718/CSA.2008.02
M. Burström
The archaeology of the recent past is a growing field of research. Is this merely a chronological extension of the field of archaeology, or is it something more? What motivates an archaeological interest in a period of time for which there are so many other sources of information? Here it is argued that the archaeology of the recent past is important not only to bring to light other stories than those generally told, but also to bring to the forc theoretical issues of general relevance for archaeology. The latter concern what material remains can be more than just potential sources of information about the past.
