This paper presents the using speed fuzzy logic controller for six phase induction motor fed by six phase voltage source inverter. At first the models of SPIM, indirect field-oriented control and SPVSI are developed. After, the speed fuzzy logic controller is used to achieve robust performances against rotor resistance and moment of inertia variations. The control scheme simulated by Matlab/ Simulink software and the simulation results obtained with using fuzzy logic controller are compared. The performances obtained by the fuzzy logic controller are very good and decoupling is maintained.

In this paper, we propose to detect and localize the broken bar faults in multi-winding induction motor using Motor current signature (MCSA) combined to Support Vector Machine (SVM). The analysis of stator currents in the frequency domain is the most commonly used method, because induction machine faults often generates particular frequency components in the stator current spectrum. In order to obtain a more robust diagnosis, we propose to classify the feature vectors extracted from the magnitude of spectral analysis using multi-class SVM to discriminate the state of the motor. Finally, in order to validate our proposed approach, we simulated the multi-winding induction motor under Matlab software. Promising results were obtained, which confirms the validity of the proposed approach.

The paper presents a research based on a vision of a multi-agent model working for the ambient comfort measurement and environment control system. Such means are used for developing the Smarter Eco-Social Laboratory (SrESL). The human Ambient Comfort Affect Reward (ACAR) index is proposed for development of the Reinforcement Learning Based Ambient Comfort Controller (RL-ACC) for experiments using equipment of SrESL. The ACAR index is recognized as dependent on human physiological parameters, such as the temperature, the electrocardiogram (ECG) and the electro-dermal activity (EDA). The fuzzy logic is used to approximate the ACAR index function by defining two fuzzy inference systems: the Arousal-Valence System, and the Ambient Comfort Affect Reward (ACAR) System. The goal of the RL-ACC is to find such the environmental state characteristics that create an optimal comfort for people affected by this environment. The Radial Basis Neural Network is used as the main component of the RL-ACC to performing of two roles: the policy structure, known as the Actor, used to select actions, and the estimated value function, known as the Critic that criticizes the actions made by the Actor. The Actor which manages Critic processes was used as a value function approximation of the continuous learning tasks of the RL-ACC and presented in this paper.

This paper presents the benefit of an increased dc-link bus voltage on power losses in a bidirectional two-level inverter. Inherent power losses in inverter originate in IGBTs and diodes among electric vehicles. A model is built to consider parameters from these devices, electric input (current, voltage, power factor) with improved accuracy to evaluate losses and estimate the junction temperature of IGBT and diode with the help of an equivalent thermal-electric model. Compared are two dc-link bus voltages of 400V and 700V. Also SiC-diode is applied to further improve efficiency in motoring and regeneration modes.

The prediction of iron losses is of great importance in AC machines especially in PM brushless ones. This statement is further confirmed when dealing with fractional slot PM machines (FSPMM) since a wide speed range can be achieved. The paper is devoted to an investigation of the iron loss in both stator and rotor yoke as well as in a 12 slot/10 pole FSPMM. Based on FEA, the investigation focuses on the assessment of iron loss in the flux weakening range in so far as their increase could be a critical issue. The FEA post-processing has led to the iron loss density maps considering low and high speeds. Moreover, an analysis of the variation of the iron loss with respect to speed has been carried out. It has been found that the efficiency of the machine is greatly affected in the flux weakening range which is due to the remarkable increase of the PM eddy current loss. In order to overcome this limitation, radial segmentation of the PMs is proposed and its effect on the iron loss is analyzed.

The global energy market is in a phase of transition, and attention is increasingly focused towards renewable energy sources and energy efficiency. Professionals work in completely different environments today as compared to the time when they were educated. Expert knowhow on sustainable energy engineering is now more important than ever before. Here, we describe new educational avenues offered by the Photovoltaic Laboratory (PV-Lab) at Berne University of Applied Sciences (BUAS, www.pvtest.ch) in Switzerland. As a leading house in research, development and applications in photovoltaic, the PV Lab at BUAS has introduced a suite of new “short courses” in photovoltaic for worldwide professionals to re-gain the competences required for using the suns' energy.

In the recent years the study on new motor topologies for automotive applications has found an increasing interest. The environmental impact of conventional internal combustion engine, together with the increasing demand and the cost of the oil, are two of the main reasons that makes electric motors an attractive alternative. Machines that employ interior permanent magnet configurations are widely recognized as good performance motors for traction applications. On the other hands, the exponential increase of the price of rare earths magnets in the last years, is making rare earth motors a very expensive solution. This encourage the research of low cost, rare earth free alternatives, represented by the permanent magnet assisted synchronous reluctance machines. Three different magnet dimension configurations have been considered. This research highlights the influence and benefits of the insertion of ferrite on the machine performance, emphasizing the importance of a careful evaluation of the magnet quantity in order to optimize the performance and reduce the total cost.

The paper describes a variable speed, doubly fed induction generator based, standalone power system supplying unbalanced and nonlinear load. A sensorless control method of the fundamental 50Hz harmonic uses a PLL for synchronization of the measured stator voltage vector with the reference one. Additional part of control includes feedbacks from the components of voltage asymmetry and harmonics, extracted in the adequate frames. The frames rotate at angular speeds corresponding to each harmonics and to a negative sequence of the fundamental one, respectively. A grid side converter control, besides its basic functionality eliminates the stator current asymmetry and harmonics to reduce the electromagnetic torque ripples. An improvement of generated voltage quality achieved by using the proposed extension of the sensorless stator voltage control method and adequate control of the grid side converter is shown based on the results of the laboratory tests on a small power unit.

In this paper an analysis of a power converter based on a modular multilevel topology is discussed. A mathematical model of the MMC is developed in order to evaluate its dynamic behavior and to better understand the incidence of the circulating current phenomenon which could compromise converter performance in variable speed drive applications. In fact, if such problem is not properly addressed reliability problems arise.
