Within the framework of the study of J.W. Salomonson’s survey collection of late Roman African Red Slip Ware, new evidence from the North Tunisian workshop of Henchir el Biar prospected by Salomonson in 1968 is presented here. Typo-chronological evaluations and standardized fabric description have been combined and cross-referenced with already studied finds to establish a coherent classification of Henchir el Biar’s late Roman tableware production. The long-lasting assumption of an end of production in the mid-6th century AD is thereby revised.
在J.W.

Two sanctuaries, two horos inscriptions and a procession road of the Classical period in southern Euboia: Detection, reconstruction and interpretation

In this article we reconstruct the religious landscape between the sanctuaries of Plakari and Karababa in southern Euboia. These cult places were connected by a procession road, datable to the Classical period. To map this fragmentarily preserved road system and the general layout of the rural sanctuary on the Karababa hill slope we developed a three-staged methodology for targeted surveys. This comprises a desktop study of the target area using remotely sensed and spatial data, mapping the target area by making orthophotos from a drone, and ground-truthing by means of pedestrian surveys and revisiting and reassessing known archaeological find places. As a next phase of our research we reconstruct the road system and offer an interpretation of the road, sanctuary and other constituent elements of the religious landscape, emphasizing the importance of movement and landscape perception. In this final, interpretative part we also discuss a large and long boundary wall which we argue to have encompassed the sacred land belonging to the sanctuary, and two horos inscriptions, probably demarcating the temenos of the sanctuary proper, which included several platforms, a threshing floor and possible altars and which may have been dedicated to Demeter.

A Cantharus from ancient Betar near Jerusalem (the so-called Warren Cup) and Roman Silver Plate 一个来自耶路撒冷附近的古贝塔的Cantharus(所谓的沃伦杯)和罗马银盘

This article examines in detail a Roman silver cantharus, said to be from ancient Betar, near Jerusalem (Palestine), and attempts to set it in its wider material, social and historical contexts. After consideration of the construction and condition, the scenes are discussed and attention drawn to the Greek elements in the iconography of the scenes of homosexual intercourse, especially the hair, which also provides a guide to the age and status of the figures. The possible impact of the iconography on the users of the cantharus, the status of its purchaser, and its final archaeological context are all touched on. Connections between small-scale vessels in various materials are also noted, especially Arretine pottery. Finally, questions are raised about individual craftsmen and workshops, signing and copying, and even chronology.

New attributions to the sappho-diosphos painters' workshop a group of black-figure kyathoi reconsidered

This paper proposes to attribute, for the first time, three Attic kyathoi to the Sappho Painter and gathers together other vases that may belong to this late black-figure workshop (end of the 6th- beginning of the 5th century BC). It further confirms through the study of figured decoration and shape that an important part of Attic kyathoi manufactured in this workshop was a legacy left by Psiax, a hypothesis already suggested for a few pieces by C. Jubier-Galinier. A study of shape makes it possible to group vases which would not be comparable on stylistic grounds alone, and it reinforces previous stylistic comparisons of figured decorations. It also points out the importance of the potter's work in the organization and understanding of Attic ceramic workshops.

Rural Malta : first results of the joint Belgo-Maltese survey project

The paper presents the first interdisciplinary results of a joint survey project in the northwest of Malta, with finds ranging from the Prehistoric till the Early Modern period. Three permanently inhabited sites were encountered dating to at least the late 6th or early 5th century BCE, with a clearer attestation in the Hellenistic/Roman and Late Antique periods. The resulting reconstructed settlement pattern of the Phoenician/Punic period suggests a managed landscape that seems to be a good reflexion of what is happening in North Africa and elsewhere in the central and western Mediterranean. At least from the Roman period on, these sites seem to have specialised on the production of olive oil.
