Based on an assessment of the political and epistemic potential of the contributions of Christianity of Liberation and of Theology and Philosophy of Liberation, in this paper I look at some of its key concepts that can currently be used in Latin American for the dialogue among the popular movements and for the debate of the Social Sciences that commit themselves to them. These concepts are those of Poor, People and Praxis and Popular Wisdom. I also propose three dialogues within the great multiplicity of possibilities: with the Mariategui Indo-American Socialism; with Revolutionary Peronism; and with the proposals of Pope Francis. I conclude by highlighting some of the key issues for these dialogues contained in the profound relevance of these issues of liberation.

The present text recovers aspects of the history and concepts from Liberation Theology in relation to women. It shows that despite significant advances of this theology to reflect from the perspective of the poor in Latin America, as a theology it continues imprisoned in the Catholic institution repeating in its own way the Western tradition formulated in the Nicean Creed. Theologians addressing the specific problematic of women and questioning the coupling of dogma with excluding patriarchal concepts do not find a warm welcome in the liberated male world. Honorable attempts are recognized, however considered insufficient to transform the old content and old powers. The text reflects some challenges to Liberation Theology from the introduction of sexuality as fundamental anthropological mediation and shows the limits of economic and social mediations which Liberation Theology prioritized. In the midst of developing these questions, it outlines some of the ways proposed by feminist theologians that are developed outside of the clerical institutions and which follow their own path with inevitable difficulties.

The theme of revolution gained important space in Brazil, Latin America and the Caribbean in the late 1950s and early 1960s. The successful Cuban revolution (January 1959) feeds the imaginary of youth, including the Christians. Young Catholics organized in the Specialized Catholic Action, especially in the JUC, JOC and JEC, working in education, student and trade union movements, in the countryside and in the cities, are also concerned with the issue of impoverishment, inequality and oppression. And so the idea of a Catholic Left and the need for alliance with other sectors of civil society that wanted social transformation and revolution began to advance. And how could the Christians participate in this reality? How to be a Christian in a miserable world? How to read and interpret the social and political dynamics that generated exclusion? These are questions that occupy intellectuals of various tendencies, especially Christians. A process of elaborating a new formulation of the intelligence of faith, of theology, the Theology of Liberation then began. This article, based on qualitative bibliographic research, aims at reflecting on the ideas of revolution, the understanding of the Christian revolution, and how it was being built, especially from the Christian youth, the Theology of Liberation.

This paper analyzes the discursive response of the Presidents of the Republic, the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate to the demonstrations of June 2013. Understanding discourse as an essential tool of the political process, the text analyzes the use of elements such as logos, ethos and pathos in the pronouncements of these three trustees. The conclusions show that the three representatives opted for different ways of manifesting themselves, but there are many similarities from the point of view of the content and the discursive strategies that consist of defending and legitimizing the political system and naturalizing the idea that the protests “are normal and in a democracy“. Demonstrators, in turn, questioned institutional power, complained about representative democracy, and denied the legitimacy of political institutions and representatives.

This article aims to develop a typology about the appropriation that MPs make on Facebook, and the kind of interrelation developed with citizens, what we label as cyber-base. Two indexes were constructed: the Parliamentary Activation Index and the Cyber-Base Activation Index. They were elaborated by analyzing the posts and comments received on the Facebook pages of 20 Federal MPs, in a period of time of one week. It is observed the existence of four ideal types of patterns the parliamentarians’ relationship with the cyber-base in this social media: 1) pages with high political performance; 2) pages with medium political performance in which only the parliamentarian activates it; 3) pages with medium political performance in which only the cyber-base activates it and 4) pages with low political performance. This study contributes to understanding more how the process of interconnection, mediated by Facebook, between representatives and represented takes place. Keywords: political representation; internet; Facebook; MPs; performance standards

We present the special issue “The emerging powers and the contemporary world order: dilemmas, tensions, and possibilities”, organized and published by the journal Sociedade e Cultura from the University of Goias. The debates that have been done in the last years in the Research Group on Middle Powers (GPPM) and the Research Group in Asia-Pacific (GEPAP/UEPB) has called attention to the necessity to organize events and publications that strand together some thoughts concerning such topic. Henceforth, workshops and panels were organized in academic meetings on National Association of Graduate Studies and Research in Social Sciences (ANPOCS), on the Brazilian Association of International Relations (ABRI), and on the International Studies Association (ISA); and now, we are glad to organize this special issue, which represents an important moment of synthesis of some reflections regarding the emergence processes of new middle powers and their impacts to the contemporary world order.

This article analyses the multiple, contrasting roles and limitations of the dominant IPE regionalist theories in the research about the New South American Regionalism. The article focuses on the methodological dimensions of each research approach, at the North and the South, analyzing the role of theory in research by the deployment of the Weberian concept of ‘iron cages.’ The paper critically examines two levels of categories in global conversations, one international and the other regional, which gathers dominantideas used in research on the IPE regionalism. The first level groups the South American perspectives from inside the region and anchored in dialogue with different international theoretical orientations. These are: the market-led perspective, the multilateral developmentalist, and the post developmental views. The secondlevel of categories includes the Eurocentric regionalism, liberal integration theory, and actor-oriented North American regional perspective.

International Relations in the new millennium present new and renewed interaction flows among a great number of actors and themes. In this context, a deeper reflection on state power and emerging powers becomes extremely relevant. Therefore, we will present the theoretical debate on the concept of emergingand middle powers in International Political Economy. The objective is to provide a theoretical review that allows us to outline some propositions on the analytical possibilities and limits of these concepts in contemporary times.
