This study examines employer branding and the relationship between corporate reputation, social media, and the intention of potential applicants to seek future employment. The researchers deployed a structured questionnaire to gather data from national service personnel in Ghana via the WhatsApp platform using a Google Form hyperlink. The proposed conceptual framework was tested based on 581 generated responses. The researchers depended on ADANCO 2.1 software for analysis. This helped in producing the PLS-SEM. The results indicate that the application value, development value, and social value positively impact reputation, which successively influences the intent to apply. The findings also reveal that, where social media influence intention to apply, it does not positively impact corporate reputation. The limitation of this study and directions for future studies are presented.

Academic and professional practice development is taking an ever-more dominant role in higher education and is evolving through undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative inquiry (URSCI) in the undergraduate curriculum, particularly in courses involving interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary modules/subjects. Such courses are critical to engaging students in more meaningful and deeper learning experiences and enabling them to experience real-world issues, all while developing various disciplinary and professional skills as part of both a specific content area and more general competencies. By developing and enhancing URSCI skills, graduates from higher education institutions gain the agility to adapt to changes in the world. Inter- and multi-disciplinary approaches are required to tackle global challenges such as climate change, food security, and public health. Such engagements and experiences are particularly important as employers increasingly expect graduates to have higher-order literacies and communication skills in addition to their discipline-specific knowledge. This special issue, therefore, presents original work and nuanced ways that faculties around the world actively engage students in URSCI.

Continuous Improvement and Innovation (CI&I) is a business management strategy that concentrates thinking and action on the things that makes the real difference. Performance assessment is the most significant step in CI&I, as it analyses and reports on outcomes – it reveals which goals have been achieved and which are still to be achieved. Emerging aquaculture farmers are not searching for handouts; they want to compete on a commercial scale. Aquaculture can only attract investors if it becomes profitable and viable. As part of the research reported here, role-players in sharptooth catfish businesses attended focus group discussions, and were equipped to implement actions and assess their own performance. The performance assessment process was followed to monitor the action that had been taken and to report results. Mechanisms such as action monitoring and support; observation; the formulation of questions and ideas; identifying opportunities; performance assessment; and achievement stacker were applied to assess the achieved outcomes. The study led to the identification of markets and potential customers; signed orders; access to processing plants; the printing of business material (e.g., stickers); training; and the completion of new ponds. Questionnaires were sent out and completed. An experiment with earthworms and tilapia fry used as catfish feed was completed successfully. In conclusion, the outcomes of this study have revealed a need for further research that would assist small businesses in the catfish industry in growing and becoming profitable.

Decolonising South African Agriculture – Bringing Dignity Back to Small-Scale Farming

Decolonisation should include not only political independence, but also the return of factors of production to the formerly colonised people so that they can use them to participate meaningfully in the economy, facilitating their economic emancipation from former colonial rulers. This not only involves putting the factors of production back into the hands of the colonised but also empowering them to generate wealth. Hence, the re-balancing of the agricultural landscape to actively include small-scale agriculture is part of the decolonisation process. Returning viability and dignity to small-scale farming entails reconnecting people to the land. Therefore, African investments in agriculture need to be focused on small-scale farming so that income inequality and poverty can be alleviated. The paper proposes that the promotion of small-scale agriculture change achieves both the objectives of reversing the impact of colonialism and restoring dignity to Black farming, as well as providing quality employment within local communities. The paper does not suggest that every farm must be small-scale, but that every small-scale farm be given an equal opportunity to produce and contribute to the economy as these farms can provide business opportunities for marginalised groups, namely the youth and women. Hence, the question remains - Where does one acquire the resources and expertise to kick-start the recalibrating of agricultural production on a small-scale? The answer lies in a mixture of finance and business skills from firms through Corporate Social Investment that creates partnerships, both public and private, that sow the seeds of small-scale success.

The location of writing centres in universities has attracted attention from practitioners and researchers in the field of academic support scholarship. These writing centres, known as spaces where students discuss their writing ideas, have become part of the decoloniality discourse in South African higher education. This study adopts a mixed-method approach and builds upon Grimm's theory of transitional space to examine tutor perspectives on the contribution of writing centres' pedagogical practices and physical location to the decolonisation of education at the Durban University of Technology (DUT) and Mangosuthu University of Technology (MUT). The findings reveal that the writing centres in these contexts contribute to the decolonial agenda by employing various approaches such as multilingualism and one-on-one consultations that are sensitive to the African context. However, despite these positive contributions, it is necessary to initiate decolonial discussions that address historical past injustices. The study recommends that the creation of decolonised spaces is a complex process requiring collaborative engagement between writing centres and the university community, including management. Writing centres have an integral role to play in decolonising the university space, particularly in the South African context.

The Impact of the Presence of Prosodic Features (Tone Markings) on Comprehending Setswana Words in Reading
Pub Date : 1900-01-01 DOI: 10.51415/ajims.v5i1.1076

The paper is about the impact of prosodic features, more especially tone marking, in extracting the meaning in Setswana readings, because of its contribution to meaning in Setswana. The research was conducted in response to the 2016 Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS), which found that more than 80% of Grade 4 students tested in an African Language were unable to read for comprehension. The semiotic theoretical framework, which is concerned with how signs are used for interpretation, served as the foundation for this study. The focus of the study was on the Intermediate Phase learners from eight schools where Setswana is taught as a First Additional Language and/or as a Home Language. Qualitative and quantitative method approaches were used to collect data. Participants were chosen through random sampling. The study discovered that when words are not marked, learners are unable to determine which meaning is intended. It was discovered that in reading the most difficult aspect is comprehending what has been read. The study proposes that new means of emphasizing prosodic markers (such as tones, accent, stress, and rhythm) be given special focus in the South African education system so that learners may be able to extract meaning and comprehend what they read.

Creating Knowledge and Knowers in the Undergraduate Curriculum

This paper draws on concepts from the field known as the sociology of knowledge to identify the challenges involved in introducing research in the undergraduate curriculum. It begins by using Bernstein’s (2000) ‘pedagogic device’ to conceptualise the introduction of research as a movement from the field of reproduction to the field of production with profound implications for who students have to ‘be’ in order to engage with research as well as for classroom practices and course design more generally. It then moves to using the tool of specialization from Maton’s (2014) Legitimation Code Theory (LCT) to go one step further in exploring students as researchers.

The study aimed at determining the relationship that exists among internal management systems, innovativeness, and the sustainability of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) within the South African manufacturing sector. As a result of the changes that are taking place daily in technology and business operational policies, organisations are to revisit their internal management systems, level of innovativeness and sustainable measures with main reference to SMEs. A quantitative research approach was used in the study, as it was meant to establish the relationship that exists amongst the set variables, internal management systems, innovativeness, and sustainability of SMEs in the manufacturing sector. In the study, the target population consisted of all the SMEs in the manufacturing industry of South Africa. The scale accuracy was performed using Smart PLS 3.0. The findings from the study show that there is a positive and significant relationship between all the variables. The study recommends that there is a need for the government through the small and medium enterprises development department to review their approach to SMEs so that they can have adequate resources to enhance their business operations.

The study recommends that there is a need for the government through the small and medium enterprises development department to review their approach to SMEs so that they can have adequate resources to enhance their business operations.","PeriodicalId":389941,"journal":{"name":"African Journal of Inter/Multidisciplinary Studies","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128803646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The considerable increase in the intensity and duration of care provided to the elderly by family caregivers warrants a detailed review of the support interventions available to these “invisible” individuals during the COVID-19 pandemic. Family caregivers had limited access to respite care due to the restrictions imposed by the COVID-19 protocols. This increased their stress and the burden of caregiving. This commentary article details the experiences of family caregivers of the elderly and establish the type of support interventions available to them during the pandemic, especially in low-and-middle-income countries. Random search of literature was conducted, and themes identified include: “fear of contagion”, “limited resources”, “knowledge deficit” and “grieving in solitary”. In addition, this article recommends strategies to mitigate the burden and stress experienced by them.

Chief Executive Officers of small and medium enterprises have a tremendous task to strategically lead their institutions to become active players contributing positively to the gross domestic product and create more employment opportunities. This study seeks to establish the influence of strategic leadership roles of Chief executive officers/owners of small and medium enterprises on the performance of these institutions in the Zimbabwean economy. The study followed the quantitative research approach to collect data using a 5-point Likert scale questionnaire from a sample size of 373 respondents selected using the simple random sampling method. The study employed the exploratory factor-structural equation modelling process to analyse data after collating several questions from the extant literature. The analysis tools used were the IBM SPSS Statistics v26 and IBM SPSS Amos v26 software. All the five strategic leadership roles had a significant effect on the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises. The study findings will help Chief Executive Officers of Small Medium Enterprises in Zimbabwe to execute their strategic leadership roles incisively with due diligence given their effect on the performance of Small and Medium Enterprises.
