In this article, the process and results of a literature search using a new proposed scientific literature search tool (ToS: Tree of Science) aimed at partially overcoming the need to search in different databases was used. In its present form, ToS needs, as input, a previous search in the Web of Science (WoS), and by means of all references used in the articles found in the WoS search, it selects the more significant items, classifying them into three categories: root, trunk and leaves. In our example, from an initial total sum of 164 hits found in WoS, ToS provided 90 items. The following fields of these two results were put together in an Excel sheet for elimination of repetitions and further consideration: title, authors, source, year of publication and DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Then, the titles of the articles were read and graded by the three authors (a senior researcher, a junior researcher, and a PhD student) as 0 (of no interest for the topic), 1 (of possible interest) or 2 (of interest). The marks were added up and those with a score > 3 (56) were selected for the abstracts to be read by the PhD student to establish a final student’s own selection (SoS) of articles for initiating the review of the literature on her topic of interest.

This electronic resource review evaluates the Material ConneXion (MCX) database. The review considers the MCX database’s authority, scope, record format, search, user interface, user experience, design, added features, support, and pricing. It also explores the general limitations and makes suggestions for improvement. The MCX database is categorized by chemical composition of the materials, comprising eight distinct categories. The MCX database was found to be an excellent resource, both for curated materiality content and for UX/UI and functionality.

Western indexing tools have a documented English-language bias, which contributes to the challenges facing researchers publishing in their native language. There are actions that librarians can take to mitigate this bias such as including information on library guides about indexes that highlight resources not covered by traditional sci-tech indexing tools. This article introduces three academic journal databases from China that are available for North American and other institutions. With a focus on sci-tech journals, basic descriptions of coverage and functionality of these resources is presented. Significant quantities of Chinese sci-tech information are not indexed by Western sci-tech abstract and indexing tools but are available via the databases discussed.

Technical standards are important documents that academic libraries collect to support education and research, particularly for engineering and technology programs. However, standards documents present many unique discovery and access challenges that are confusing and cumbersome for users. To help alleviate these issues, Elsevier started indexing technical standards in their Abstracting & Indexing (A&I) database Compendex in 2018. This column provides a brief overview of Compendex, a summary of the standards collections currently indexed in the database, and a discussion about using Compendex as a tool for standards discovery and access.

As many sciences move to be more data-intensive, some science librarians are offering more research data services and perform research data management roles. Job analyses provide insight and context to the tasks employees actually do versus what their job descriptions depict or employers assume. Two separate job analyses studies investigated the roles and responsibilities of data services librarians and research integrity officers among the top 10 private and top 10 public higher education institutions. The focus of these interviews was research data management support roles. Comparing these two groups’ responses indicates that the role-based responsibilities for research data services are not always clear within institutions and are predominantly placed on individual researchers or research teams, but science librarians may provide some solutions to address this gap. This paper presents a model for the potential roles of science librarians in research data management.

A challenge for instruction librarians is building strong, collaborative partnerships with faculty who value your expertise as both a librarian and a faculty member. This article discusses how a request to “help with citations” evolved into scaffolded information literacy instruction that focuses on the shared value of open resources and led to a partnership providing more opportunities to support each other.
