In this paper the concept of rate variable multidimensional DS/SS communication systems is proposed. First, a multidimensional DS/SS communication system is introduced. Then a simple method to get rate variability is presented, indicating that it is important to find a set of optimized "medium codes" and a set of optimized mappings according to the information symbols with various lengths under given conditions, where the medium codes and the mappings have great impact on the system performance. Finally, as an example a set of good mappings and numerical results are provided based on a practical efficient DS/SS scheme.

In an optical subscriber loop that utilizes TDMA (time division multiple access) technology with a single mode fiber, the data from subscribers are in burst-mode. While transmitting the burst-mode data there are penalties in the optical link budget: timing jitter in the recovered data stream and the loss of the header in the subscribers' data stream cause poor transmission performance. In this paper, the technical issues for burst-mode data transmission in the access passive optical network (PON) are discussed, and through systematic evaluation results, it is experimentally demonstrated that transmission is effective in an access PON with a 17 dB budget and good BER performance.

The combination of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) with direct sequence spread spectrum (DS/SS) is suitable for the design of a multiuser system robust against channel impairments. We propose a frequency domain equalization method for the OFDM-DS/SS system in mobile fading channels. It is shown that the learning constant is a key factor which is chosen depending on the channel conditions. By using the adaptive teaching constant, the average performance of the equalizer can be improved.

We propose an improved Gaussian baseband filtered minimum shift keying (GMSK) quadrature modulator using a finite impulse response (FIR) filter whose coefficients are given by the difference of the phase response to remove the coefficient noise resulting from the conventional method. The modulator is designed by considering the effects resulting from the difference between the ideal analog signal and its digitized version in terms of the sampling noise, quantization noise, truncation noise, and coefficient noise. It is also confirmed by an experiment that it can be used for a digital cellular system.

Telecommunications is an important element of a country's infrastructure. Without telecommunications, the development of a modern industrial society is almost inconceivable. We experienced this ourselves in Germany after reunification with what was then the GDR. When Deutsche Telekom took charge of the development and operation of the telecommunications networks in eastern Germany, the company immediately came under enormous pressure to modernise the completely outdated inadequate communications infrastructure in eastern Germany as quickly as possible. Business users in particular urgently wanted telephone lines and other telecommunications facilities in order to carry our their activities. The author outlines the general ideas on strategies for developing network services. Firstly, progress made in a series of key technologies has led to communications networks becoming more and more efficient. Secondly, increasing deregulation of the markets has given rise to competition, which, together with the third aspect, namely higher customer requirements, has led to network operators doing their utmost to respond to their customers' wishes as quickly and flexibly as possible.

Real-time software tools and effective operating system supports are essential to reduce the complexity of real-time software developments such as a switching system. In this paper, we propose a new advanced cross debugging architecture based on a network transparent and connection independent client-server model. It enables more flexible interactive debugging of a program, including the design and the implementation of such toots. It also enables easy and efficient monitoring of the behaviour of target system.

Based on the data generated for traffic volume estimation for satellite mobile systems, and by utilising computer simulations, the general statistical characteristics of non-geostationary (non-GEO) satellite beam traffic are presented. Simulation results show that the traffic level in a non-GEO satellite beam varies dramatically and with a wide dynamic range. This is significantly different from the case of geostationary satellite and terrestrial cellular networks.

Each wireless technology now used is optimized just for some particular applications and environments. However, the next generation wireless networks coexisting with fiber-optic based broadband communication networks will be required to operate over a wide range of cell size (from picocell to massive satellite cell) and offer multimedia services where each service may have a unique rate. A new architecture of wireless network, wireless ATM, is proposed in this paper, which consolidates various radio environments and applications under a single protocol. The wireless ATM architecture embedded into B-ISDN protocol stack can adapt a wide range of physical channels. In the last section, flow control, the key technique of multiplex and multiple access in wireless ATM, is described.

The paper introduces the Personal Access Communications System (PACS) as one of the most promising new PCS technologies available today. In particular, the features and functions of PACS-based PCS network are discussed. The PACS-based system distinguishes itself from other low tier options such as DECT and PHS by its lower delay, higher capacity, better receiver sensitivity, improved system broadcast capability, and improved mobility. It is shown that PACS could provide an attractive alternative for many wireless applications including personal mobility, neighborhood PCS, wireless local loop, and wireless Centrex/PBX.
