Broadband (propagation) measurements of indoor radio channels at 18 GHz were performed in a laboratory with directive antennas using a frequency sweeping sounding technique. The power attenuation dependency on the distance, the statistics of the RMS delay spread, and the dependence of the RMS delay spread on the distance, were analyzed and the results are presented.

We present, in this paper, a specification description method which can describe the concepts of concurrent tasks, abstractions, and finite state machines to represent the behavioral aspects of switching software systems. The hierarchical functional decomposition modeling method emphasizes the decomposition of a real-time system into concurrent tasks and defines the interfaces between these tasks. The hierarchical functional decomposition modeling approach has some strengths. The first one is that the use of data flow and control flow diagrams can assist in understanding the system. Second, it emphasises the use of state transition diagrams, particularly important in the design of real-time systems.

This paper addresses the architectures used or proposed for use in the ground networks associated with multi-beam satellites designed to provide mobile satellite services (MSS). These systems are designed to provide service over wide geographic areas using new generations of satellites. These new satellites provide significant advances in technology including on-board processing and large antennas which offer increased transmit power and improved receive sensitivity. Specific topics include: the North American Mobile Satellite (MSAT) system ground network, and a large regional geosynchronous (GEO) satellite based system example.

Protocol conformance testing is the basic facility to ensure the interoperability between protocol implementations. It demands formal methods in protocol conformance testing for various protocols and testing methods. This paper gives an introduction of basic concepts and techniques of protocol conformance testing, and then an analysis of the application of formal methods in this field. We mainly focus our attention on test execution methods, which play an important role in system testing. We propose an approach to test execution based on the operational semantics of the TTCN, and use this method for our testing system's construction. We applied our testing system to the testing of different OSI protocols and got some satisfying results.

We examine the performance offered by a DQDB MAN subnetwork when the workload is generated by two different videoconference tools in use by a community of workstations dispersed on local area networks and connected to the MAN by DQDB/Ethernet switches. We evaluate the possibility of offering a videoconference service to a large community of users dispersed on a metropolitan area, reserving investments and pre-existent devices. For such a purpose, we developed a dimensioning methodology for traditional packet switched networks and applied this methodology to the design and dimensioning of an interconnected LAN/MAN system providing the videoconference service. The method allows a separate dimensioning of each subnetwork in the LAN/MAN system. Real videoconferencing tools using different compression schemes are used as traffic sources, thus allowing a comparative analysis of the impact of different coded video streams on the network performance.

High speed data transmission has become an important issue in mobile wireless communications. However, multipath propagation in wireless channels causes dispersion of the transmitted signals. We present a strategy to equalize the short burst without using a training sequence. This method is suitable for low-overhead TDMA systems such as PACS whose frame is very short. Different kinds of blind equalization algorithms are discussed and the simulation results indicate that the proposed method is feasible. We present the system model including the PACS system parameters and frame structure, and propose methods to equalize the radio channels using short sequences.

It is an overwhelming trend that the present telecommunications network is evolving towards the integrated services digital network. The user requirement for telecommunication services is expanding. The old user-network signaling system in the public switched telephone network (PSTN) can no longer meet the needs of various new services, therefore the ISDN access signaling system must be implemented. This paper describes the implementation of the ISDN primary-rate access signaling in the HJD-1000A stored program controlled switches.

A scheme for the design of a QPSK modem for VSAT satellite communications is presented, where the baseband demodulator, based on the DSP algorithm, is quantized and implemented with software. The techniques of the quantized baseband demodulator, including the matched filters, synchronization, preamble processing, AGC and and AFC, are discussed in detail. The paper is helpful for the practically oriented engineer when designing quantized demodulators.

The GTD method is used for the calculations of radiation patterns due to a dipole antenna mounted on a complex structure. The complex structure is constructed of 16 conducting plates. In the studies, a dipole antenna with a length of 0.5 inch (about half wavelength) is placed 1 cm apart from the front plate and 20 cm above the top plate of the complex structure, respectively. A vertical polarization antenna is used for the studies. The simulation results of the antenna radiation patterns at 10 GHz are presented.

A high-speed ATM/STM hybrid switching network is proposed. The switch employs a multistage interconnection network with local memory to realize the ATM and STM switch together. Different classes of services can use different switch modes. The performance analysis shows that it has excellent delay vs. throughput performance for ATM traffic in the presence of STM traffic and very low blocking and loss probability for STM call requests in the presence of other traffic.
